Personally, I prefer Goldsmith's Under Fire over Star Trek, Poltergeist or Legend, scores that are often mentioned when asked the question: what is Jerry Goldsmith's best score?

Of course, there are numerous scores to choose from and, like Williams, Goldsmith has produced several scores that would qualify as "best score". Perhaps it's better to refer to "favorite score" in this regard.

However; Under Fire has hardly ever been discussed. I've been listening to it these last couple of days and the biggest strength is its melodic presentation. And many selections sound like it was written by a different composer. Very unconventional, like Schindler's List is unconventional in many regards for Williams.

What is your opinion on Under Fire?

Well this is a coincidence...I was just a couple of hours ago listening to it in my car.
It is my favorite Jerry score as well, which is funny, because initially, I didn't like it at all. When I got first put it on, I loved 'Bajo Fuego' (How can you not?), but I was turned off by the electronics. But after seeing the movie, and listening to it again, I love it more and mroe each time I hear it. A marvelous score, and a marvelous album.
I should be resisting this, but I'm paralyzed with rage... and island rhythms.

I have never heard the score (and have never even seen the movie Under Fire ) but if asked what my favorite JG score is, I would say "Basic Instinct." I think no one -- not even JW, perhaps because he hadn't been offered to do an erotic thriller -- wrote quite a score like that.

Indeed. And from one of Goldsmith's best phases. But his best? Nah. :sleepy:

It's quite amazing, but the cake has to go to Star Trek The Motion Picture.

I'd put The Russia House above or equal to Under Fire.

not his best score, not even top 2 or 3.
OH God, Joe is posting again, someone hand me my pills!

"You're not John Conner, I saw you die, said Kyle". "I was only injured, replied John". "No, your injuries were too severe, you died. Look at you, where are your injuries? You're, you're a Terminator." "Kyle, its still me, yes my body was beyond repair, but my essence is here." He points to his head. "No John". Kyle raised his pulse rifle and aimed it at John but before he could fire, John fired first. Knocked to the ground Kyle looked up at the Terminator in the form of the man he once idolized. All hope was lost. "If you kill me how will you ever be born?" "Thats a good question Kyle, all this time we've focus on Sarah, on John, when had we known the it was you we should have targeted all along." John pointed his rifle at Kyle's face. "The resistance is finished, the battle is won. We the machines are the victors, salvation is ours." Kyle never heard the second shot.

A good score by Goldsmith, Baja Fuego is the hilight of the album, but it's not his best score.

There is no "best Jerry Goldsmith score", only favourites.

There is no "Best John Williams Score", only favorites.
Do you like John Williams? His early work was a little too jazzy for my taste, but when Jaws came out in '75 I really think he came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and an air of consummate professionalism that really gives the pieces a big boost. He's been compared to Jerry Goldsmith but I think John has a far more leitmotif-driven style of composing. In '82 John composed this, E.T., his most accomplished album to date. I think his undisputed masterpiece is "The Magic of Halloween", a theme so catchy most people don't listen to what it means. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of childhood and the importance of friendship, it's also a personal statement about the man himself. Hey Paul!

I know that there's no best Goldsmith score, so to speak, but for one reason or the other, I find myself liking this score more than any other score, even Basic Instinct or the like. So yes, I prefer this particular score and CD too. (I'd recommend tracking down the remastered CD btw.)

Of course it helps that it's attatched to a good movie.

It's a great score on album, in terms of musical listening experience, but I've never seen the film. I cannot concede that it's his best, but certainly damn good.

I would rather have Rent-A-Cop, pure cheese but sooo catchy!

I never got into Under Fire, but this thread has prompted me to give it another listen so thanks Roald.

It's been a long time, but I remember liking the score and thinking it should have won the Oscar over "The Right Stuff."

I'll have to watch the movie again. I remember someone dies shockingly, and that it involves journalists in danger.
