Does SOPA affect only US sites or can they shut down sites everywhere?
And just a friendly reminder to the rest of the world...of how we will drag you down with us.
The U.S. controls .com, .net, and .org domains. That means SOPA covers all those sites...regardless of territory.
But that's not all, we'll throw in control of 7 out of the world's 13 DNS root servers, and you're golden baby! Free SOPA for all!

The European Parliament has made a statement opposing the act, particulary in reference to the ability of the US to seize domain names

Not a hint of this story in the TV news, owned by big media studios pushing this bill

And to me this is the big obstacle, because he who controls the voice on the TV controls the narrative about any objections to this act.
Open objection to this from the average guy will be portrayed as if they're demanding the right to interfere with children or something.

At first they'll go after the big ones like Pirate Bay but after they get the process of shutting down stuff more efficient , everyone will start filing copyright claims and sites will go down like You Tube videos go down, which is not too long these days.
Or they'll all self-censor in fear of this law you'll be left with text only websites .Everything will look like AICN . Like maybe the c.d. artworks from the JWfan main page and the Tintin banner would have to be removed

Except how often do YouTube videos get inappropriately and permanently yanked? Most of that happens because of straightforward copyright infringement. Post original content, and there's no problem. There's not even a problem if you post derivative content, usually. I mean, I post lots of recordings of myself playing film scores on piano, often using screenshots or photos or whatnot as a background, and not once have I had a video pulled.
And again, what is this thread about - the Commercial Felony Streaming Act, or SOPA? Of the two, SOPA is the only one that has me concerned.

I don't want to sound paranoid but it's a pretty big deal for casual internet denizens
The internet would become like one giant store to sell movies and music with anything that's against Big Studio interest yanked out of view and sued into oblivion
Am I correct to say the Apple internet (surfing the web on an iphone/ipad with Apple approved apps) is already kind of like a SOPA internet?

I watch porn and download illegal shit whenever I feel like on my iPad. All on "Apple approved apps", obviously.

Um.. I will be a bit cleaner and better smelling when I get out of the shower...
John Williams sucks, he doesn't write with a quill pen, there is no emotion in pencil music ! Purcell is the man !Among all the things I have done in my short and pitiful life, becoming an inside joke on JWFAN is the one I'm the least proud of.

Every time I see the acronym "SOPA", I hear the word "soap" and sometimes "soapa" in my head. Like how I call TPM "tee-pee-em", ROTS "rots", COS "koss" or GOF "goff".

TPM - Tee-Pee-Em
AoTC - Ey-Oh-Tee-See
RotS - rots
SS - Nazis
CoS - See-Oh-Ess
PoA - Pee-Oh-Ey
GoF - gof
Drax - Dee-Racks

Perhaps those Anonymous scumbags have their uses after all.
Whatever it takes to stop SOPA, I say do it.

I'm still not sure how they could destroy a site that is not under US jurisdiction?
The US controls 7 of the 13 root DNS servers in the world. It also controls all .com, .org, and .net domains. And the other root clusters simply follow along with the US controlled roots. ICANN is technically in control of the entire 13 clusters, but they essentially report to the US Department of Commerce.
In short, the United States of America directly or indirectly controls all 13 root name servers in the world, and that's how SOPA has global ramifications.

Although the obvious next step after SOPA would be to outlaw the use of non-ICANN domains.

Good. Anything which draws attention to this is good.

Not exactly sure how Stallman's (admirable) free software philosophy would help us with SOPA.
