Still like the Horner version the best. I do like the graphics, as I always hated the modern Universal logo. The new arrangement is alright, I just would have done without the military like drums at the end.

The theme for Universal before Goldsmith's fanfare came along. It's quite good actually. The Goldsmith one is just better ;)

If this were something new that someone had just come up with, I'd be rather impressed. But it's a downgrade from the spectacular Goldsmith original, which very well be my favorite logo music of all time. (The Fox fanfare gives it a run for its money, for obvious sentimental reasons.)


Yeah, that and the fact that David Newman stayed faithful to his father's original orchestration and tweaked it very little when he re-recorded it back in 1997.

I never knew this was made by Horner. Still doesn't even matched up to Goldsmith's though.

Here's the complete version of Horner's theme which was first heard before Back To The Future Part III. Even though I love Jerry's 1997 theme, Horner is the one I'm that most fond of.

Seriously overdone. Replaces Goldsmith's careful balance with mindless bombast. As a result, it sounds rather insincere.

Funny though, beforr this new recording I would not have considered Goldsmiths original "minimalist"....

typically Universal doesn't have a f'ing clue on how to hand it's vast treasures.

Jerry's music is fine, this alternate is FINE, but for the 100th anniversary why not take a look back at the beauty of the music from the 30's intro, the ones that graced their classic horror films.

I can hear it in my head as I type.
OH God, Joe is posting again, someone hand me my pills!

Hey, this one is great too! Didn't know it was Horner. I'd say I like both equally, that is Goldsmith's and Horner's.

The new one is fine...things have to change with the times, and Goldsmth's superb fanfare was due for a spruce-up. Is the new one better? No....is it just - fine? Yep....

*Looking at this one ouwld think the universal studios are Based on Spanish soil! its the only recognizable mass of land, and in the very center of the screen in the whole piece...

This is very decent, most of you have this Goldsmith issue.

The new base line is interesting, putting it down from E-Major to E-flat gives it some freshness.

Definitely better than anything Zimmer brought to us in Oscars.

5.1 is great for Jerry's superior original.


Agreed, Quint, but which DVD or Blu Ray has the best 5.1 spread?

At least it's better than the Warner Bros./"Superman Returns" fiasco.

Still, nothing, IMO, beats the THX "sliding tone" logo, although I quite like the Dolby Digital "train". The CIC logo used yonks ago was meant to come from "A Gathering Of Eagles". Can anyone comfirm this?

The Horner version reminds me of my excessive listening to the "Apollo 13" boot, where the logo music segues smoothly into the opening snares of the main theme.

For me it makes very little sense, if it's not followed by a more coherent part. I think this is not well written. What is more, he destroys the antiphonal effect of the original theme.

Ah, maybe he just had too many people playing the same drum line near the end. That's probably why is sounds so sloppy. Love the low brass line under the Goldsmith theme.

Maybe becuase Tyler had the most experience in reworking Goldsmith's scores into new arrangements (Rambo chief among them), he also said that it was like destiny that he and Jerry are connected somehow:

Now I understand what those strings are doing in "the making of" vid... Cuz I figured, they weren't there in the original centennial version.

John Williams actually took another shot at the Universal logo that was used only in the year 2002.  

 

 

I can't find a more complete version of it though.  

 

Interestingly it seems to be closer to Brian Tyler's.
