  1. The man accomplished an incredible feat when he made LotR, but he was humble and focused back then. Years later he would allow his ego to get the better of him. He's lost all skill as a director now, but I'll always appreciate his past endeavours and his wonderful LotR gift to cinema and the fans.

    The Composer's Thread

With the discussion going on the thread, I'd really like to hear some more work from you guys. This used to be a pretty active thread back in the day, but no one posts here anymore, which is a shame. Here's a suite (and by suite, I mean a shoddily edited collection of cues) from a short film I scored recently. https://soundcloud.com/k-k-8/dachshund-suite It's nothing much, especially compared to you heavy-weights, but hey, if it gets some of you more shy folk to post more of your works, then it got the job done!

  3. I hate lyrics. They're often awful and I get nothing out of them. The pop music that I really like, and that I always return to, usually has the virtue of, at best, poetic, or at worst, easily ignorable, lyrical content. If the musical component of a pop song is good enough, I can look past shitty lyrics. But if the music is boring and the lyrics are shit, then I hate it.

  4. I'd wager that it's not the case. Hopefully his next movies (his "New Zealand movies") get him back to his roots.

Sounds very nice KK. I like the Star Treky opening. Really like when the melody kicks in around 1:40. Very filmesque. Here is something from me about a drunk man remembering his lost lover while viewing pictures : https://soundcloud.com/karelm-1/karimelm-ths-ost-memories ...and here the lovers reuinite at the end of the film. https://soundcloud.com/karelm-1/karimelm-reunion and an action adventure : https://soundcloud.com/karelm-1/karimelm-adventurept2v2

  8. I know - the bastard! That was obvious ever since Jaws. In my scoring of the movie, the "Smile you son of a bitch!" blast would have been followed by a rendition of "Bright Eyes".

  10. "Translated" for orchestra. Kind of like I was trying to do with those samples I presented (the "translating" part). And imagine if it were the reverse: all those ensembles you mentioned (woodwinds, strings, choir, tuned percussion) condensed down into a patch for synthesizer. And then it turns into yet another sample library to exploit and sell, and the creative idea-bouncing that comes from on-site experimentation is gone. "Imagine"? What am I saying? It's already happened. ... ... ... But I've derailed this thread enough with my samples and the questions that came with them. Who else has samples they have no idea about? (Unless you wanna continue this discussion; either option is satisfying to me)

  11. I know what you mean. It's got a little bit of West Side Story in there.

  14. You haven't heard it before? Listen to the creation of the world in the first thirty seconds or so. To hell with Haydn!

  15. I listened to Nixon, War of the Worlds, Tintin, Jaws and Return of the Jedi: Special Edition. Next, I shall listen to Revenge of the Sith.

  16. OK, reviving this thread for 2 things: First, I finally listened to the extended version with the untouched tracks in chronological order (see Post #31) and find it a much better listening experience than the OST. This way the first half is very entertaining with much variety and a lot of intersting thematical material, among others due to Stalling around. In contrast, the first half of the OST was very repetitive with the main Theme over and over due to "Theme from JP" and the early appearance of the end titles in "Welcom toJP". This was a major reason I never really warmed to this soundtrack. Now, I find it a masterpiece comparable to Raiders and Jaws. Second, I just found one place where one can buy the 4 new tracks separately in high resolution: the new pono music portal.

  18. That's a pretty good analogy, actually. Can you imagine if a fruit seller put apples and oranges on the left, the strawberries on the right, the pineapples in the left-center, and cherries in the right-center? Yeah, you'd go bananas if you saw that!
