A bit frustrating to me that almost all threads about LOST IN SPACE are about particular releases, complete stuff, missing cues, 40th anniversary etc. No thread that just wants to talk about the series and music in general. So I ressurected this. Jay, feel free to merge it with any of the others if you feel that is more appropriate. In any case, just wanted to share this video that I was recently alerted to over on FSM. The conductor says in the beginning that LIS was one of the first TV shows Williams worked on, which is obviously wrong. It was in the latter bits of his TV career. Be that as it may, it's still cool to hear the two themes live:3 points

The Hobbit: Four Movements for Symphony Orchestra by Howard Shore
Cerebral Cortex and one other reacted to BloodBoal for a topic
"The White Pope is cunning. He records here and there they say, as an old man hatted and cloaked. And everywhere his orchestrations slip past our nets."2 points -
You have yet to hear a score by him etc. You. You. Someone else may find him to have ruined countless films and to be responsible for dreadful albums - in other words, a shit composer. What of them? You're tired of other people having different personal preferences than you do. Here you are acting as though your own frame of reference on this is the right one, and everyone else has a skewed perspective, but that's also the thing you don't want done to you. So long as people do this sort of self righteously hypocritical opining, there will be others who call bullshit on it, so I think it's time to end the victimized Giacchino fan act and accept that some people hate what you like.1 point

Sherlock (BBC)
Nick1Ø66 reacted to Sweeping Strings for a topic
Would love Sherlock to get back to how it was during the first 2 series, and for Moffat to resist the temptation to reach for his 'Big Book Of Overly Complicated Scripting' as he oversees his final season of Who. We could if Moffat had written it, because he wouldn't really be dead.1 point -

With the abundance of CGI these days, it's kinda rare to see a visual in a film now that really makes me say "wow," but the whole introductory sequence to Yorktown definitely did that for me.1 point -

Yes yes yes. I love Davies' performance so much. It's too bad he got typecast as unhinged weirdos after this, great actor.1 point -

Regardless of what one thinks of Soderbergh, the music in his films -- especially that of Martinez -- is some of the best composed in the last couple of decades.1 point -

Copy that. Wade's seems to be the most useless death in the film, while Upham's treatment of the German soldier is the most shocking moment. IMO, the film is Upham's story, not Ryan's, nor even Miller's. In a way, the film is very much an adult version of THE COWBOYS.1 point -

Indeed. The Yorktown is the most memorable visual of the movie, it should have been used more in the promotional imagery.1 point -

It also became much more interesting when I learned that it was written in a brief frenzy shortly after PTA's father died of cancer. Definitely feels like the unfiltered ravings of somebody in mourning, especially a 27-year-old guy. But the heightened filmmaking and performances work on me, even Julianne Moore. And as a side note, I found it interesting that in an interview in the back of the published screenplay, he mentioned that not only was Altman an influence but less obviously, he also said he took a lot from Spielberg and specifically CE3K/ET's depictions of suburbia and bizarre fantasies happening in a commonplace situation. I do think I'd say Magnolia is closer to Spielberg's sensibilities in that area compared to, say, David Lynch. And when I think about it, the frogs scene does have a kind of Spielbergian flair to it -- little bit of Jurassic Park in there with the buildup of the frogs, in a car at night post-rainstorm -- along with some of his other "setpieces" like the derrick fire in There Will Be Blood. He could probably do a great action movie if he wanted, he's one of the few directors who can pull that stuff off at that level. Also I'm just gonna throw this here because I just enjoyed how self-effacing he is about his movies and he doesn't hesitate to admit that he would cut Magnolia down now if he could Really cool dude, the whole interview is great, goes through his whole career including Inherent Vice.1 point

I think Williams was not unfamiliar with that concept. I recall reading somewhere that, when Phantom Menace went through a meat grinder in the editing room, he had to write a few brief overdubs to help mask harsh music edits. Not exactly the same situation here, of course, but he's written "library" cues like that before.1 point

Red Letter Media Reviews (Plinkett & Half in the Bag)
Cerebral Cortex reacted to nightscape94 for a topic
Enjoyed it. Wasn't on the same level as the previous ones, but I think that's inevitable since he loved TFA. Same reason why his ST09 video is pretty good but not great. He spent the the majority of the video discussing ancillary issues such as the idiotic ring theory, misplaced prequel nostalgia, and franchise fatigue. This wasn't so much a review of TFA as it was a review of the Star Wars industrial complex. But, hey, he dropped some love for Johnny Williams a couple of times.1 point -
I wonder if any musicians would spill the beans about the trailer cues recorded? Either way, the unused trailer cues seem ripe for an iTunes Deluxe Edition release of TFA... one day...1 point
