  1. I was back in Potterland when the Macusa cue started. So glorious. It was totally worth the wait and I'm very glad I heard it in the cinema first.

  2. The Fury - John Williams Swoon! I love this score more every time I hear it! I might just play "For Gillian" on repeat all day.

  6. ^^ this is why we can't have nice things. I saw the film today and that scene was scored perfectly like a comedic waltz, didn't even sound like JW at all.

  7. That's what I like about it too. I can appreciate the "dark dramatic thriller" tone that Yates was going for in Part 1 but it's so far removed from the other films. Obviously that was the point but I don't actually think it was necessary in retrospect, I prefer how this gently hearkens back to the early films, just edging in a little more of that warmth and lyricism and "magical" atmosphere but in a darker and quieter context. I love the female choir, cor anglais, and celesta with that two-shot of Harry/Hermione, echoing back to their 11-year-old selves. Makes it feel more of a natural progression from the rest of the series IMO. I think the whole thing works pretty well with Yates's direction (and I tried best as I could to make "Replicas" fit with Desplat's existing score ) Parts of A.I. do seem like a decent hypothetical for "later Potter" via Williams to me, he brought a lot of those colors into the series. And both that score and Empire of the Sun were Williams expressing lost innocence as well so I like the fit.

  8. I'll be seeing the film tomorrow afternoon, but I just wanted to offer some quick thoughts after one listen through the OST (deluxe). Now, I've only listened once, but there seems to be a general lack of thematic cohesion -- "major" themes are only heard once or twice. Perhaps there are a ton of important unreleased cues. I suppose there's probably at least 30 minutes of unreleased music. Also rather surprised of the lack of Hedwig's Theme -- only two appearances on OST, plus at least one more in the film according to those who've seen it. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, however. That said, though, I am incredibly impressed by this score. It's incredibly exciting. The fantastic "Main Titles" material, which of course I've been listening to to for a while, starts things off on a terrific note -- I'm guessing that with the film that cue will seem "epic" (under the definition I've stated many times here). From the figure of immense weight near its beginning, to the incredibly optimistic ostinato and gorgeous theme at the end. By the way, for those accusing the "Main Titles" theme of being a steal from "Polar Express," where exactly in that older score are you referring to? At the beginning of this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EsA-uEBis4 - that theme doesn't really sound much like JNH to me, if that's the one you're referring to. Anyway.... The opening of "Inside the Case" was really the "Holy s---!" moment for me in this score. JNH can really build excitement. The end titles were similarly stunningly good. A little lightly orchestrated at the beginning, but very exciting and fun and powerful -- how end credits for a movie like this should be. And then this is just so good, with that "Main Titles" theme... The magically alluring theme -- presumably the "main theme" developed extensively in "A Man and His Beasts" is marvelous as well. It's powerful in its grand statements, contemplative and alluring in its softer ones, and incredibly fun in its jazz statements. In fact, those jazz statements were really stunningly good. Totally unexpected from a "magical" choir-heavy theme. Yet this theme sounds like it was written as a jazz idea! Amazing variation! "Blind Pig" is really fun too. All around, this was terrific stuff. Fantasy films are supposed to have whimsy, they're supposed to have excitement, they're supposed to have wonder and awe. JNH's score hits all those bases and more. I can't understate how great it is to hear such optimistic music (in other words, I'm the opposite of Dcasey). I'm now truly HYPED to see this film.

  9. Just discovered the original version of this on YouTube... ... and, wow. I absolutely adore the Song for World Peace -- it might be one of Williams' all time best -- but I'd never heard the original. Incredible.

  10. I enjoyed the film a lot. My dad, who wouldn't really be into these films, enjoyed it too and really enjoyed the humour. The Niffler is great. I want one. I really liked Newt too. He's pretty relatable I thought. For a Hufflepuff.

  13. Yep, just listened to all the bonus tracks. I'd say "A Man and His Beasts" and "Kowalski Rag" are two nearly A+ pieces hampered by slightly meandering/episodic structures and abrupt endings. Wish they had more cohesive dramatic flair from beginning to end but they are both tons of fun and filled with great variations. These are two thoroughly enjoyable and versatile melodies and he puts them through the ringer in ways not heard in this franchise since Doyle's various spins on the "Harry in Winter" theme throughout his GOF score, and definitely not in self-contained pieces like this since Williams. Love the Prokofiev-esque "Montagues and Capulets" take on the Kowalski Rag! Some nice stuff in the rest of the tracks too (that "Blind Pig" song is a pretty amusing 90 seconds, goofy JK Rowling lyrics and fun vocal performance!). Overall this score hasn't quite blown apart my expectations but it's certainly met them and happily gone beyond a few times, and I can say this is exactly the kind of stuff I felt was missing or not as successful in the last four Potter scores. I'm really looking forward to hearing this in the film. Musically this feels back on the right track to me and it's a relief to have JNH around for this universe, to see how excited he is about doing it and to know he'll be returning.

  19. I love that moment. It fits with the spirit of the score, film, and performance, Rickman's totally hamming it up there. There's a sense that he's almost looking into the camera when he says it with that ridiculous giant close-up and the slowww head-turn to Harry lol (which I guess bolle doesn't realize and may be part of why he thinks the music is inappropriately over-the-top, which would be interesting actually.) But I think it hits a great tone that's scary for the kids and intentionally funny for the adults. Williams helped make that an extremely fun, memorable moment of campy villainy. I think a lot of people officially fell in love with Rickman's portrayal of Snape at that moment, it really defined the tone of his character going forward with those long, slightly comical dramatic pauses.

  20. It should be noted that the ensembles and soloists were all over the world, and not on a single place. That may lead to some mixing issues, as all of this was done live, and along with the crappy recording quality, it probably accounts for the feel of things not sounding all in place.

  29. Sony has the license to release more music from the Star Wars films, but they don't actually have the music to release; They'd have to get it from Lucasfilm, it's possibly Lucasfilm would simply rather wait to release complete versions themselves on a Disney label instead of letting Sony do it. Also, it's possible no one at Sony is motivated enough to even try to put together new sets.

  30. A Palace Upon the Ruins (Selected Works) by Howard Shore. Really enjoying this disc. Isn't it funny how Howard Shore's concert pieces tend to be more accessible and enjoyable than majority of his film work? If Shore were to stick to writing that kind of music for the rest of his life (and releasing it, of course!) I'd be a happy person. Karol

  32. See this is what Alexcremers doesn't understand about open discussion and never has done during his long tenure at JWFan. Why would anybody want to humour or indeed engage in conversation with someone who asks a fair question but immediately follows it up with snotty and dismissive overtones in the next breath? It's a waste of time for both parties before a response has even been considered.

  34. UHF This might be my favorite movie ever. Just the sheer ridiculousness of everything is great. I tried to watch it with my friends, but they didn't get it. Also, some of them hadn't even heard of Weird Al. It confused me.

  35. It's definitely a song. Woah, End Credits Pt. 2 has a brief but really bold rendition of the main theme. Full orchestra and choir belting out the A-section. Tracks 3 and 4 start with a passage similar to the opening titles (after the Hedwig quote). Pretty good. Track 7 definitely has some Lady in the Water temping going on. Not an amazing second CD I think, better on a second listen! I'm happy I paid the extra few £s to get it. I wonder if Yates temped the film with the reel JNH sent him? Might've shot himself in the foot if that's the case.

  36. I adore the main theme. It's seductively brilliant. It fits so perfectly in this world. I hope it's prolific in the film. Also one of my favourite whimsical themes is the one at 2:04 and 3:24 and 5:28. Lovely. I can't bloody wait for my Bonus score to arrive to hear more!

  38. We can definitely expect to hear Vader's theme, the Force theme and the Rebel fanfare throughout the score, imho. I wonder if there will also be some verbatim quotes from actual EpIV score cues.

  39. Nice interview. Interesting that he said he had to really fight to not use any previous Potter material, and they finally allowed him to use all his own themes. Also great that he's scoring Gilroy's 'Inner City.' And those 3 films next year sound like we're going to get some really great fun stuff from him. A Francis Lawrence and Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller, Jumanji, and a live action Nutcracker film. Sweet. So happy that he's doing the next Fantastic Beasts too! By the sounds of it, he'll be doing all 5 films. I bloody well hope so. With Yates directing all 5, and clearly having a very successful and fun collaboration with JNH, I'm sure he'll love to do them all. I was waiting decades for him to have a franchise where he can develop themes and carry his sound over several films. We got Batman, but not solo, so thank jebus that now he has Hunger Games and Fantastic Beasts, and even his Snow White films, which have beautiful material. It's a very good time to be a JNH fan.

  41. I know this was released weeks ago but I really like the figure/motif from 0:19 to 0:39 in the Main Title. Its really imposing and big. Sounds pretty impressive. Is that reprised in a similar form through the soundtrack?

  42. 1:30 is like Williams and JNH had a melodic love child. It's the perfect spirit of both of them. Adore this piece.

  43. I'm referring to the film series that are specifically scored by Williams, hence why I said the film series scored by Williams... If you don't at least ask Williams to score a new Star Wars, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park or Indiana Jones film, then you are an idiot. Fantastic Beasts is slightly different because of it being a completely outside of Potter, and the fact that 3 other composers have scored Potter, but Star Wars for example, not asking Williams is retarded.
