What to expect from Episode VIII's Score?
Pieter Boelen and 4 others reacted to Docteur Qui for a topic
I've long since learned not to have any kind of expectation of content other than high quality. And that's a 100% guarantee with JW. As far as themes go, the less I hope for specifically, the better. That's not a criticism at all, but if I'm sitting there expecting a developed version of Poe's theme or a balls-to-the-wall villain theme in the style of The Imperial March then I'll be disappointed because it's almost certainly not going to happen. JW rarely does the expected in his scores these days, and it's only in retrospect that it all seems to be perfectly in line with his instincts and style.5 points -

A heads up for those interested to read more discussion of the music as used (and unused) in the films: I'm working on a score restore feature for both Jurassic Park and The Lost World. Expect to see the first videos somewhere in the next month.3 points -

The Part III CD will be available to purchase digitally without purchasing the other volumes & DVD, here's the link https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06W5581FJ/ And as a result, we have the cover for Part III clean now2 points

I've always suspected that George kept final cut rights when he sold to Disney (I doubt it was a sticking point for the Mouse) and this seems to confirm it.2 points

That cover still looks slapdash to me. We go from an original Drew Struzan painting on volume 1 to a more generic but still striking piece of marquee art on volume 2 to a candid snapshot from across the room for volume 3? Cheesy, says I. And the sound equipment crawling up the side of Spielberg's head makes him look like Lobot's cousin.1 point

@DominicCobb Probably your guess is as good as anybody's, really. It's gonna be interesting to see what happens with TFA's material. To me I think Rey's Theme is the only thing that will surely have at least one prominent statement - be it action-driven, broadly emotional, or otherwise - along with probably a few other references in the underscore. Other than that, who knows, I feel like everything else is potentially on the chopping block. I could see the Resistance March merely showing up once for the first scene on the base, or it could wind up with several big action renditions in the climax! Kylo's motifs could continue to define his character throughout, or they could get buried. If Poe gets a big hero moment, maybe his theme returns in glorious fashion....or maybe not.1 point

@Marcus, I just listened to your Timpani Concerto today and was very impressed (mostly by the Overture). The very opening is really great. I love the enchanting magical figure at the beginning, first on keyboard and then with the strings. I also love that awesomely Williams-y brass bit at 1:29 (and its later winds appearance). The pastoral theme is also very nice. I like the brief chords at the end (as at 1:50 and 4:10), and then the little bridge (or whatever you'd call it) that follows. I believe I might have sub-conciously found 3:08 running through my head earlier as well.1 point

What to expect from Episode VIII's Score?

can we merge this thread with the 'John Williams begins recording Episode VII in Los Angeles' one, since it seems like the comments and overall constraints of the discussion are the same - would just make it easier to follow when news actually does come out.1 point -

Greetings everyone! I just thought I'd share with you a video from a very recent premiere of "Love's Last Rites", a piece written for violinist Henning Kraggerud and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra. The piece was written to form part of an all new and newly commissioned program themed around Norse mythology, though my piece wasn't written to specifically address that. Rather, it became a deeply personal piece for me, and I'm incredibly grateful to be the recipient of what really is a rather spectacular first performance. Hope you'll enjoy!1 point -

He does indeed use a similar fast tempo in concerts. Completely mystifying to me...as you said, it totally changes the piece. I'd even go so far as to say it ruins it.1 point -

I was actually transfixed by those clips that were available for a period of time. Not pure 'music' per se, but something about the hypnotizing sound design, complete with bird chirps and whatnot -- much like some of the tracks on Horner's THE NEW WORLD.1 point -
