  1. Oh god no. Game of Thrones is one of the most monochromatic, murky pieces of garbage I've ever watched.

  2. It's the guitar. The guitar makes all the difference.

  3. I really like this score for its complete unabashed old fashioned heroism and romance, Williams essentially in turn in the noble, pastoral and rustic Americana modes throughout. It might not be top drawer stuff as it feels all too familiar by the year 2000 but there are some genuinely great moments in it. The album doesn't really do the score favours by presenting very drawn out meandering suspense like The Burning of the Plantation and rather subdued Americana elegies like The Parish Church Aflame nearly back-to-back or indeed presenting the heroic fanfaric finale of the score half-way through the album. Plus there were some much more interesting pieces in the film that were left off the soundtrack album. Emerging in this score is the composer's increased use of the modern action trends and Williams uses the ostinati and rhythms to characterize the villains and several of the action setpieces and succeeds in creating some highly compelling moments of kinetic excitement like the ending half of Tavington's Trap, which features really nail-biting atmosphere. Redcoats on the Farm and The Death of Thomas is among my favourite pieces on the disc, full of anguished melodrama and suspenseful energy. Mark O'Connor's fiddling is a highlight in The Patriot suite and his talents and the rustic Americana colouration might have actually benefitted the whole score.

  4. Yes and sometimes what sounds less inspired is the exact opposite of autopilot, maybe they had to strain twice as hard as normal because the inspiration wasn't there. I just think it's a useless phrase.

  6. But we're talking about two different ideas. What you're saying is still different than accusing someone of being on autopilot, which is what I'm trying to get at the heart of. By implication this would mean that Williams was doing just enough to get the job done with little care or worry about serious artistic merit. Again, I don't find The Patriot to be some unsung masterpiece, but I do think it's a good score. When taken in the larger context of Williams' oeuvre, you're right, it gets lost in the well of great scores. And while a part of that score's overall greatness is diminished when taken as a snapshot, we should still, on some level, not forget to acknowledge its individual character and quality.

  7. bolle, Richard was talking about Solaris, not Basic Instinct. I'm sure you could not tell because Alex posted a picture of the Solaris BD without typing out its name.

  8. I like both! Sure, I guess I "prefer" Legend, but they satisfy in incredibly different ways. I love Link because it makes me think of Fall. Without fail, I put that OST on and I'm transported to a world of chilly evenings, colorful foliage, and jack-o-lanterns sitting on porches. Such an effective "Halloween-y" score. I've never seen the movie and I don't want to, I prefer the images the music sparks in my imagination.

  9. While THE PATRIOT wouldn't scrape into my all-time JW top 50, it is, however, a solid piece of work. I'll agree with Nightie; it's nothing special, but still light years ahead of what was passing for film music, at that time. A fair comment, but, hands up, who thought that THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST was a stone cold classic, when they first heard it? Sometimes, scores can "creep up' on you. TAT did, and maybe, THE PATRIOT will, one day. I'd rather JW at his worst, than some composers, at their best.

  11. It's time for our first video featuring unused music. Hurray! From now on, you'll quickly be able to see if a video features unused music. These titles have been marked with a *. 3. Entrance of Mr. Hammond * 2m1 The Entrance of Mr. Hammond So this is the first cue to feature unused material, even if it is only very brief. After the disruptive arrival of a helicopter at the dig site, Alan Grant first meets JOHN HAMMOND, who makes Alan and his colleague/girlfriend ELLIE SATTLER an excellent business offer. As Hammond blows the pair away with his generous offer, this brief cue underscores the celebration of the two. In the film, this is where the score ends. But when we cut to a distant foreign location, Williams underscores LEWIS DODGSON exiting a beat-up taxi with an ominous coda, as the film’s corporate espionage subplot is about to begin.

  12. Traditionally the 2nd film in each saga, if they follow the template, features an extended action sequence in the first act (Chase through Coruscant, Battle of Hoth). I'm sure this film will be no different.

  16. Well, sounds pretty inspired nonetheless. I'm even more excited to hear what Williams came up with, if he was really excited by the film.

  17. Yes sadly the Trade Federation March was entirely abandoned in AotC after its single appearance where it was rather curiously placed in terms of subtext. The arena march was obviously meant to be a one-off "monster battle music" in a gladiatorial style which reminded me of the Rancor music of RotJ quite a bit in style even if JW gave the sequence a bit more formal march form in AotC. It is ironic that it went unused in the film itself and found a new life as this militaristic new march in RotS when Lucas tracked it in for two scenes.

  18. I think all of those ROTS appearances are tracked from AOTC, though.

  19. I'm not a fan of calling any composer's work "on autopilot" just because it sounds like something they've previously written. I don't like to make presumptions about their creative process.

  22. John Williams is not seasonal for me. I truly enjoy listening to his music any time of day, any time of year. I don't really listen to the Home Alone scores outside of winter, though. I don't think any composers are really seasonal for me, but some scores are.

  26. I don't think the site or forum will really ever close down, unless Ricard can't keep it going for whatever reason. Which would be heartbreaking, I would never want to see it become an empty domain name. I don't think it will. Some things might have to change if Andreas or LeBlanc ever step away, I dunno how difficult it would be to find replacements. But I'm counting on Ricard to always be around to look after his baby. Bottom line for me as a member is that I have a variety of reasons why I visit JWFan and when there's officially no more new Williams stuff coming, a big chunk of those ongoing reminders will evaporate. Honestly I'm browsing here a few times a day and I know that naturally won't happen with him gone. I figure I'll always want to check in, maybe weekly, maybe monthly, maybe less, but at any rate I just assume there will be enough regulars with similar habits that traffic will slow down. I don't think it'll kill the board but I could see GD's activity eventually settling to something like where Other Topics is right now, and the Williams sub-forum about where Tolkien Central is at.

  32. I've always felt the JURASSIC PARK theme (especially the first more reverential, psalm-like part) would fit a church organ arrangement perfectly. Alas, there have been no such album recording, as far as I'm aware (unlike STAR WARS) -- I'd just love to see a HUGE cathedral organ used for this, and a very competent player. Meanwhile, we'll have to suffice with some amateur renditions on Youtube (not too shabby, though):

  34. I think its like "The Jedi Steps and Finale" is a great cue following by a brilliant suite of themes, while "Farewell and the Trip" is a great film cue throughout. While suites of themes can be spectacular, I tend to favor music actually written to picture, which is what could make it the favorite track for me

  35. I sincerely don't know what to expect from the next SW score, as I like to be surprised. But I know what I'd really love to see again. I was listening to The Force Awakens a few days ago and I was once again so delighted by this cue: It's great to hear Williams blending together the new thematic material with the classic one in such a natural way. It almost seems that the new material has always been part of this musical universe since the beginning. And the classic themes never sound "plastered" forcefully into the fabric of the new score. I guess it takes quite a lot of dexterity and even genius to be able to accomplish such a feat. I very much hope that The Last Jedi will do the same.
