  1. Guys, this is more than worthy of an upgrade. The original album is a solid representation of highlights but it always felt too relentless. The missing material is all good as the score is so richly orchestrated than there is no real dull moment. There are some nice quieter materials that help to create this nostalgic Golden Era vibe. And the material gets time to breathe a little bit between the bigger setpieces. Liner notes are great too. The mastering seems bit gentler to me, for lack of a better description. Couldn't be happier with this set. Karol

  2. John Williams has always written wonderful string elegies but this relatively recent one is among my favourites with palpalble grief mixed with religious overtones:

  3. Eric is an extraordinarily sensitive and deeply human composer, criminally written off by some as just another muzak/pseudoclassical guy. Utter lunacy to think he should even be mentioned with some of the usual suspects of that ilk like Karl Jenkins. That said, the BYU performance you linked has awful, awful, awful, awful diction. Can't stand their pronunciations. Recommend his own group's performance, with much more refined diction, clarity of tone, and far more tasteful vibrato than any wholly American choir seems capable of. Here, and with score so you can appreciate the very fine part writing.

    Titanic vs. Everything

Alas, it's another pointless poll that will most likely be completely inactive in the next week or so... Do you agree with the age-old JWFAN proverb "Titanic is better than everything"?

  10. I would say Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, and Starship Troopers are basically all equal masterpieces.

  11. Wow, you weren't kidding. Just saw a couple of those on eBay. Didn't even know about it. Well, once these new OST CDs sells out, I bet they'll announce the re-issue of those cassettes, since they're long out of print. It'll be the most logical next step in a serious of really well made decisions in the last decade regarding SW music releases.

  15. Nice! I just got done listening to Neil's expanded Total Recall on Spotify, and now I just started his Basic Instinct. After that, I'm going to check out The Hollow Man OST, which is luckily on Spotify too!

  17. I'm going to reiterate how much I love Randy Newman's new album. He shows he can still write a gospel-blues barnburner at the end of "The Great Debate." Really fun:

  18. Yes! FSM Online just published an interview with David Newman. Here's what it says: http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/fsmonline/story.cfm?maID=6156&issueID=153&page=2 You're right, I forgot about those. However, it seems more the exception to the rule.

  19. I heard they'll be re-releasing the 2CD program on cassette. And I can see the linear notes with a brief intro by MM: "I finally came full circle regarding Star Wars. It was a pleasure working on it back in '97 as it was to be a part of this massive effort to restore the original LP masters to these incredible CDs. Now, it's time to move to other projects."

  20. For TESB, the one cue with choir (when they approach Cloud City and there's women's voices) I expect will just play with no choir element at all. For TFA, I wouldn't be surprised if they do the Snoke music the same way - there just is not choir - or if they have access to the full mulitrack and play the choir through the speakers. Either way would probably be fine, its kind of inconsequential. ROTJ is a tricky one - I dunno what they're gonna do. I don't BELIEVE the multi-tracks had survived, and even if they have, the choir would be on its own clean stem anyway. MM mentioned that for Jurassic Park concerts, they pulled the multitracks so he could see if they could include the choir in the film's audio mix for the cues there that have it, and when he pulled them and had them transferred, he found the choir was too tied to the other orchestra sounds so couldn't be used, so those concerts just don't have choir at all. ROTJ might have to be the same way, I suppose. Do you have any proof of this statement? Well, that's just not true at all. Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Matrix. and all three Lord of the Rings all feature unused music restored for their concerts, just to name 6 examples... and Back To The Future even had new music written for it.

  21. Williams was consulted and gave his stamp of approval to the finished printed scores for all four films. None of this could be done without involving him and having his okay, so yes, he was involved. It must be noted that most, if not all, live to projection concerts are prepared using the finished mix of the films as the guide to build the new concert score, so in most cases that means replicating the edits and cuts all throughout. Don't ask me why, it's just the way it's done for every film concert (as far as I know) and it seems JW is okay with it. Having the source music not being performed live is mostly because it would sound very awkward and sometimes it's almost impossible to replicate (it's also meant to be just background music). Same goes with choir and some of the oddest instrumentation choices--while it would be super-cool to have woodwinds in 5 and two grand pianos for the snow battle sequence in Empire or having the 12-male bass voices for the Emperor scenes in Jedi, this is just not practical for pure logistical reasons, especially if it's just one or two cues, so adaptations have to be made. These concerts are thought to be tailored for regular symphony orchestra size (with the occasional additional stuff in some sections).

  25. Miyazaki made a tv show call Future Boy Conan. I haven't seen it, but it's Miyazaki and takes place in the future. Also, how about Akira. There's a good chance she's already seen it though as it's pretty famous. Can't say I'm too well versed in anime to be of much more help.

  27. It's got problems, but I have a certain fondness for the movie Royal Space Force, which takes place on an alternate Earth with a lot of futuristic technology just on the verge of building a spacecraft. It's got a pretty cool score written chiefly by Ryuichi Sakamoto (why I watched the film in the first place)

  36. Hope she recovers quickly. In the interim, here're some TV series she can digest while convalescing that might be of interest based on the genre and tone you're looking for: Ergo Proxy Kara no Kyokai Death Note (not the Netflix movie) Steins; Gate Erased Serial Experiments Lain Attack on Titan And possibly these, but the tone can vary. Code Geass Full Metal Panic! (borderline, it has some teen romcom stuff that can get annoying if she hates that genre) Future Diary

  38. Did you ever hear the tragedy of John Williams the composer? It's not a story Williams would tell you. It's a Williams legend. John Williams was a film composer so powerful and so wise, he could use the music to influence the films to create...emotion. He had such a knowledge of film scoring, he could even keep Steven Spielberg from hiring anyone else for Schindler's List. Unfortunately, they were all dead. Ironic.

  39. To me, its very noticeable. It's not just that they copy off plot points. There are a couple of re-creates shots and even a lot about the narrative structure of the film is the same: action opening, long first act including a late-in-the-game introduction to the main character, and a tragic death launching the finale off. It doesn't ruin the film for me, but I don't feel that its a flaw to be taken lightly As for Abrams closing the trilogy, do you really see him produce a GREAT film? A masterpiece for the ages? Its the last episode of a nine-piece series. It should be great. Not just a JJ-Abrams-good-time-at-the-movies film. We got a do-over from Return of the Jedi, why not make the most out of it? Oh and as for the Eagles: Their appearances in Tolkiens writings are consistent in that they don't cover much ground (Gwaihir only took Gandalf from Orrhanc to Edoras) and if they do - it takes them a long time because they require frequent stops: they left the Misty Mountains after the Goblin army and took just as much time to get to the Lonely Mountain.

  40. That would be a surprise, to be sure. But a welcome one. The complete ESB OST is still not available on CD.

  41. I have no expectations that this will be anything new, but a remastered version of the original OST programs would be pretty nifty to have on CD. It already exists in digital form, they'd just have to press it.
