  3. No offense to the labels, but it hardly matters as long as MM is involved.

  4. I mean, hypothetically if he passed on Episode IX specifically in order to do something completely new, I might consider it a fair trade depending on what the movie even was, the director, and how the score ultimately turned out, weighed against the potential of Episode IX. But the only real precedent we have for that in his career is when he ditched Harry Potter for Memoirs and that was a bit of a unique case. Realistically, we're either getting 2 more hours of Star Wars music or nothing.

  8. I find all the discussion based off of MV's post here interesting. I didn't find anything he said nebulous or confusing at all, and I'm surprised how many assumptions people drew from it. Here's the post again just in case Facebook ever eats it, and its not on this page anyway https://www.facebook.com/lalalandrecords/posts/10155939087978755 He's simply saying he spent the weekend listening to some Black Friday titles that have already been mastered. "7 CDs worth of product" could be a 4CD set and a 3CD set, a 6CD set and a single disc release, three 2CD sets and a single disc, etc etc - lots of possibilities. These aren't clues, he's not providing any information to let people guess what they are, just telling people to set money aside because its going to be more expensive than usual, and full of more titles that will sell out faster than usual.

  9. Yes! So long as you enjoy listening to ROTJ as if it were recorded inside a toilet bowl.

  10. My fav little moment is when Rey is polishing the scrap metal she found and she briefly looks up and sees a very old lady do the same. It's fleeting, and it works.

  11. Hey, ya'll, The original thread will be full of people talking about shipping notices for another 4-5 pages or so, so to avoid you having to weed through that to talk about the actual contents of the set, here is a separate thread to do that! Those of you who have the set - how does it sound, what do you think of the music that was never released before, was ET Adventure worth the wait, what do you think of the liner notes? Oh, and just to leave it in a place more easily found, if you are putting this on your digital player of choice and want the extra cues from disc 2 integrated into the the flow of the complete score, here is the chronological order again: 1-01 Main Title 1:14 1-02 Far From Home / E.T. Alone 6:57 2-11 The Encounter 1:49 1-03 Bait for E.T. 1:45 1-04 Meeting E.T. 2:08 1-05 E.T.’s New Home 1:28 1-06 The Beginning of a Friendship 2:53 1-07 Toys 3:13 1-08 I’m Keeping Him 2:20 1-09 E.T.’s Powers 2:44 1-10 The Closet 0:53 1-11 E.T. and Elliott Get Drunk 2:57 1-12 Frogs 2:12 2-14 The Kiss 0:49 2-15 Levitation 0:41 1-13 At Home 5:38 1-14 The Magic of Halloween 2:55 1-15 Sending the Signal 3:58 1-16 Searching for E.T. 4:18 1-17 Invading Elliott’s House 2:24 1-18 Stay With Me 2:24 1-19 Losing E.T. 2:04 1-20 E.T. Is Alive 4:22 1-21 The Rescue and Bike Chase 8:07 1-22 The Departure 7:07 1-23 End Credits 3:55 TOTAL TIME - 81:16

  12. Even mediocre Horner scores are better than almost everyone else's.

  13. Right. I know he himself isn't the biggest fan of the Star Wars films: he often said he doesn't watch them outside of the scoring stage, and described some of his scoring choices as "tongue-in-cheek." He probably enjoys more realistic films. But I do think that he acknowledges that Star Wars is his magnum opus on the level of the thematic construction (fifty leitmotives and more still to go!), simply because its by and far the most enduring series of films he ever scored. I think that's why he keeps on doing them. I would want him to score the ninth entry. Closure in important.

  14. My impression is that he recorded a lot, if not all of it, and was supposed to recording some revisions. And the score wasn't finished when they used it during test screening. They never finished mixing it. Let me rephrase that so it makes more sense. Theft is a theft and there should be no excuse. So I can't see why it should be more of an issue in Troy than it is in something like Willow. Besides, I'm more concerned about how close they actual "quotes" get to the source rather than what they are. That is why Gayane in Aliens bothers me greatly while Gayane in Jack Ryan score doesn't bother me as much. That is because he actually does something else with it. The snippet of Dies Irae (from Sinfonia da Requiem) in Genesis Countdown is more of an issue in The Wrath of Khan than it is in Cocoon, for a similiar reason. And the Romeo and Juliet snippet is more annoying in The Search of Spock than it is in Willow. The Britten quote in Troy is a close one to spot, I grant you, but the fanfare seems like a part of a larger context within War Requiem whereas Horner uses that idea as an isolated passage. So in my book it isn't as bad. Even though, as I pointed out above, it's still essentially the same thing. As for Troy, I don't want to spend too much time defending it because it isn't exactly a masterpiece of any sort. I just happen to like it for whatever reason and, as mentioned previously, the original album is one of the more enjoyable Horner CD's from that era. Although I have to admit neither of the two scores really would work that well with this film. While diet Horner version can feel a bit too bare-boned and dry, the overeager Yared stuff comes off as bit hokey when put against picture (having watched some reconstructions). It's either too much or not enough. Both work better outside the stuck up film so not sure what it says about either of them. Petersen had little respect for his composer's contributions anyway and, if I recall correctly, Horner himself has said his music didn't really help make "Troy great again" in the end so the whole affair wasn't really worth all the hassle and/or, whether you want to admit it or not, hard work. But hey, I still like both scores. Bite me. Karol

  15. It's clearly something to do with my middle-class protestant upbringing that I'm much more open to listening to Williams talk about how composition is hard, pragmatic work that you have to keep at every day. I get mistrustful of Zimmer's whimsical exercises. I have the same reaction to Eno, whose music I adore so it's not a judgment on Zimmer at all.

  16. Zimmer said in the Q&A that they were brought on board when Villeneuve just finished the first assembly cut, and the four of them (DV, editor Joe Walker,HZ and BW) watched it together all for the first time.

Never. I don't adapt as well as Lee. He was so bad in last Christmas' LA musical or whatever it was called. He was insufferable. Now I just avoid him. Im sure Jared Leto will give as equally bad if not worse a performance so its not just him in the unecessary sequel. I saw the Arrival. Dull boring and visually un-impressive looking. I also forgot about it by next morning. There are many reasons I am not interested. I hope all who want it to be good like it. I will enjoy reading the comments.

I haven't been following this thread because I haven't even seen the original, but I looked and didn't see this in the last few pages. Here's Ford accidentally connecting with Gosling. Two great faces.

  26. Finally got around to watching It. It was surprisingly pretty good, I appreciated Its Stand by Me-esque "coming of age" story and Its creative visual-effect driven scares. The score was... ok?? Granted, there wasn't much room for the score to breathe in the film's frantic pacing but there had to be something better than the "electronic stomping sound effects with generic 20-second 2010's Hollywood Fantasy Music interludes. They should have gotten John Williams to do it!

  30. My biggest hope score-wise would be new strong themes that fit into the universe as seamlessly as Rey's theme did. My biggest hope music-wise is that people would leave preconceptions at the door and enjoy the music as it is, and not compare it unfavorably to some abstract, virtually unobtainable standard in their minds.

  35. Well, he's done a LOT of that stuff in recent years, and it's what I love with his current output. Not the big blockbusters, but those types of more intimate, lovely, smaller affairs. If you liked TULIP FEVER, I also recommend MILK, STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE, TAKING WOODSTOCK, RESTLESS, PROMISED LAND, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, THE UNKNOWN KNOWN, THE END OF THE TOUR and THE CIRCLE (more electronic, but still very much in this vein).

  37. And me, now. And the great James Southall, until recently. But he's come around to your side now: http://www.movie-wave.net/back-to-the-future/ But notice the reply by Erik Woods referring his previous low opinion of the score...and there's a later commenter, Howard Hand, who "agrees more with the original 3 star review". 41. I disagree. I think they'd sell a lot fewer of COS than the other two and fewer of PS than Azkaban. Bundle them all and you have a chance of selling to each of the fans who are only after 1 of the 3. I'd release the Potters as 3 composer bundles + GOF. Gets the scores out faster and forces many people to buy more or go without.

  44. It was one of the great pleasures of listening to that score back in December 2015. Wrapping your head around all the aspects of Rey’s Theme was like finding the key to unlock the entire score for your ears
