    John Williams Fan Art

Thought I'd share this here, it's from Disney animator and artist Andrew Chesworth. You've seen Williams Family Guy-ified, here he is Disney-fied.

  3. My review, no spoilers. In Polish. http://film.onet.pl/recenzje/gwiezdne-wojny-ostatni-jedi-ostatni-beda-pierwszymi-recenzja-bez-spoilerow/2q6lep Don't believe the malcontents. I saw the movie today and the score is really great. And it's not about recycling old music because, apart from old themes, there's a lot of exciting new music, not just only two new themes. And even two scenes with choirs - short but very emotional and epic. Brilliant score. Williams did it again! Can't wait for the CD, hope to get it tomorrow. I wonder what he chose from this, since the film has about 130 minutes of music.

  4. As much as I can't wait to hear the score, part of me really enjoys this part of the experience. That is to say, these final few moments of us all waiting in excitement together leading up to a score this special are kinda fun too. In isolation, the anticipation is sickening, but anticipating with other people who you know are looking forward to the score as much as you are makes it almost enjoyable, if that makes sense? I don't know.

  6. Regarding Making Star Wars, listened to a non-spoiler portion of their podcast and found their comments on the score encouraging, in an obviously inarticulate sort of way. They mentioned that new Jedi Steps variation:

  8. Okay so you guys are probably going to think what the hell about this but hear me out haha. Up until today days ago I literally gave no fucks about Titanic's score I had seen the movie once and thought it was okay. Also never bought or listened to the music let alone "My Heart will go on'. I heard about this release because of Close Encounters and bought that. But as an early christmas gift someone got me the 4 CD set and today I stuck it in and I have been addicted it 2-1/2 miles down, rose, Lovejoy chases Jack and Rose , and many others I love. I felt so stupid for never giving this score a proper chance. I Have it on repeat like my god I was dumb

  9. While I was initially disappointed at how little new thematic material there seems to be in this score, I am pretty excited about how confident all the reactions are in the music and I'm glad that I know now to basically expect Force Awakens 2.0. My biggest caveat with that score was always that while I enjoy the themes, I wanted more out of them in the underscore so I love that he really seems to be using this score to pay off that material. Of course I did hope that he'd be able to achieve that while also bringing in a lot of new core stuff completely unique to TLJ, but nevertheless it sounds like he's really cementing an identity for this trilogy and it's leaving an impression.

  10. Yeah, you really thought people want to discuss whether Daisy Ridley is a bitch or not? What are you, 14? You have issues with women, man.

  12. So there are really 2 main stories in the film: - Luke/Rey - The Resistance (splits into two stories for a while. So the heart of the score for the Luke/Rey story would have to be the force theme, with Rey's theme given a strong supporting role. For the resistance, and particularly the story of Finn and Rose, it's Rose's theme. The Resistance theme plays a prominent role, much more noticeably than anything written for Holdo. Canto Bight really has some fun music for the chase scene (lots of horn rips!), and the source music used in the casino sequence has a lot of fun steel drum stuff. And really - please don't think this is all doom and gloom. I pointed out things that were noticeable to me, but this isn't some hack job of a score, so don't get that impression from what I'm telling you.

  14. Hello! This thread is to discuss the Last Jedi score as heard in the film. No spoiler tags are needed but you're welcome to use them in the early days now before it's opened wide. @Oskar has already kicked off the discussion, you can read it here, and let's continue it here!

  18. I imagine Luke and Leia's theme making an appearance but I don't know what else JW would repeat from ROTJ. I wonder if these early preview people are familiar enough with JW's music to be trusted or if the music has some superficial similarities to past Star Wars scores that they mistake for whole quotes or if there is tracked music in the film from ROTJ, which would strike me as odd.

  20. Poe’s theme does return in the first half of the film, but I didn’t notice it during the last act. I’d compare Rose’s theme, at least the first half, to a major mode version of the force theme. Usually performed by higher woodwinds, flute, clarinet, etc. But it gets big statements as well. The opening interval , at least as I remember it, was a perfect 5th - however rhythmically and as far as the contour it feels like the force theme for the first bar or two. If I remember right the melody is always in 4/4, with two upward slurring sixteenth’s on the last beat of the first measure, followed by a beat 1 in a downward interval. The second measure ends the same way. That much I remember clearly. It is a long lined melody. Maybe not as long as Poe’s complete theme, but long regardless. Hedwig - yes, that’s one of those moments.

  21. It scares me when you ask that and I hesitate with modern action scoring because most of it tends to be banal and easy as pop music to write, where with Williams, and adventure classical scoring, I love the intricacy of that type of scoring because that orchestral way, for me, is the pinnacle of writing. So many modern action music tends to just be repeated notes ad nauseam, however I am sure he wouldn't do that and he would still be a master composer and orchestrator with it no matter what. We Shall See!!!!!

  22. Mm..interesting. There are some sweeping shots with just music, and some montage style stuff. I don’t remember anything really in particular regarding this though. There’s a part of the film where ALL sound is removed, including music.

  23. As a JWfan, I want my concert tracks, but more than that, I would love one more huge blockbuster where the average fan says "I love the score." This may very well be that movie, and JW deserves the praise.

  25. Well with Williams' track record, he probably chose that powerful rendition of The Jedi Steps, that awesome version of The Resistance March, all of the important and dramatic emotional swells of Rey's theme, and left them off the OST in favour of non-thematic suspense cues. Otherwise, he would consider himself to be showing off.

  27. It is exciting to be getting a sequel score treatment from Williams that in a way sounds more in the vein of how Shore did the Lord of the Rings scores than how he did the two previous Star Wars trilogies.

  29. I couldn't agree more. Star Wars will always be a special experience for me, and seeing a new Star Wars film is incomparable. More than that, we have a new John Williams Star Wars score to look forward to. Feels good, man.

  32. Unfortunately I wouldn’t say the approach is much different. There is a lot of music in the film, close to wall to wall I’d say. There are some great long shots that allow for lengthy statements of themes, but you’d sometimes see that is TFA as well. Character themes are given room to be heard, you won’t miss a single statement of Leia’s, Rose’s, Rey’s, Kylo’s, or the Force’s themes. There are no real prequel trilogy transitional fanfares or anything like that. I’ll also say that there is some scoring in isolated sections that sounds way more modern in its approach than anything we’ve really heard from Williams. There is some music that appears as that is written more in the modern epic superhero film style than anything else Williams has written for Star Wars before. So that’s interesting. Music for the island and Jedi training is predictably heavy on the force theme and more mystical textures. This really does live in the same tonal universe as TFA when it’s all said and done though.

  35. Reviews a few overly sentimental third-act scenes ... make extra use of John Williams’ immediate score Another excellent score comes to us from John Williams The story is adequately dramatic without ... John Williams's overpowering score, thank you very much. Most of Spielberg’s crew have worked with him for a number of years, including the legendary John Williams. The composer, working under a time crunch, comes through with another top-notch score–this one feels restrained but comes through in a strong way when needed. John Williams' score is quite good. The combination of the adventurous Spielbergian lens and a dynamite John Williams score jazzes up the most mundane newspaper conventions, from a copy editor striking words with a red pen to trucks rolling out with first editions. If only the same heroic anthems accompanied the writing of a movie review. John Williams’ horn-heavy score (creating either tension or heroic awe, as needed) Spielberg can’t help but turn The Post into a “message movie.” He rises to our current moment on stilts, with a megaphone and a swelling John Williams score. he notable score was provided by the legendary John Williams
