  1. Amazing News! Here : http://variety.com/2017/film/news/john-williams-star-wars-composer-han-solo-movie-theme-1202650282

  2. Saw this news a few hours ago, and became immediately giddy. I know I and some others had been fantasizing about this arrangement, but I never believed it would actually happen! Some here seem to be taking this very cynically, but those thoughts hadn't even entered my mind until I read this thread. My first thought was simply that it's so exciting to see Williams engaging (at least to some extent) with the next generation of composers. And I hope we get a fully orchestrated concert suite!!

  3. As much as I love the idea of a John Powell Star Wars score, it never sat right with me knowing that someone other than Williams would be writing the theme for Han. Now we get the best of both worlds, and Williams finally gets to give Han his theme. Only took 41 years to get to this point!

  4. I am not proud of the noises that just came out of my mouthhole, but I'm glad nobody is home and I could let them out.

  5. The day I think it "feels off" for John Williams to be writing a piece of Star Wars music is the day I retire from being a John Williams fan and/or a Star Wars fan. And that is never going to happen.

  8. Music by John Powell Main Theme by John Williams It's got a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

  9. I think the movie is in trouble and they are pulling up the strings to save the movie. Thus Enter John Williams! Anyways.. It's good news for us and a reason for me to get the OST when it comes out next year.

  10. This is awesome news! A new Williams theme and a new Powell score all in one!

  11. About as good news as anyone here could have expected. Powell is a solid choice even without Williams' assistance. I'm really keen to finally hear a proper JW theme for intrepid movie hero No. 2 though.

  12. Disney hate John Powell's main theme confirmed. 😉

  13. I'm really blown away by that rapid-fire brass at 0:52 of Rey's Journey. It accompanies a fairly simple shot of Rey's pod arriving at The Supremacy, but JW chose to score the gravity of the drama of Rey voluntarily going to Ren with that kick-ass brass. Really cool.

  14. Calling it now: Williams will fall in love with Emilia Clarke's character and insist on scoring every moment of her. John Powell gets fired. Ramin Djawadi is removed from Game of Thrones at Williams' demands, Daenerys Targaryen's theme instantly enters the public consciousness. Suddenly he is more prolific than he was in the 70's and 80's. JW ages but never dies. He outlives us all.

  15. At this point I'm convinced the Mouse just wants to rub out as many themes as possible out of JW before he kicks the bucket. "But gentleman, I'm so tired. Please can I just.." "STFU AND WRITE!"

  16. Ridley Scott on Star Wars (reportedly from a Disney board meeting): You all know me. You know how I earn a livin'. I'll direct this turkey for ya, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish! Not like goin' over the pond chasing Cannes or Oscars. This series will swallow you whole. Shakin'. Tenderizin'. Down you go. Now we got to do it quick. That'll bring back the fanboys and it'll put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than thirty million bucks, Miss Kennedy. I'll "assist" for thirty, but I'll shoot it and release it for fifty. You've got to make up your minds. Gonna stay alive and ante up? Or want to play it cheap, rely on rereleases the whole winter. I don't want no "visionaries". I don't want no "auteurs". There's too many captains in this town. Fifty million dollars for me by myself. For that, you get the film, the final cut rights, the whole damn thing.

  17. Powell was the absolute singular reason for any interest in this film on my part. Now that Williams is involved, my interest has peaked to 2 reasons and 2 reasons only.

  18. Really exciting news, and Williams' confidence in Powell seems even more exciting!

  20. NEWS: "John Williams to compose theme for Solo!" JWFAN: "For fuck sake!"

  21. Disagree! John Williams doing the theme for Solo is a good idea. Him and Powell together is a good combo! Solo is now a major project that I will be keeping my eye on.

  22. "Han Solo and the Princess", played by a Horn Solo, is the solo theme for Han Solo!

    Ridley Scott on Star Wars

  26. He was just channelling that Kern/Porter sound, it's not any actual tune. So I just did a 45 min chest and back workout at the gym and ummm, thanks, I just had this on repeat for the whole workout. I think it made a huge difference, HOWEVER, I think everyone in the gym thinks I'm nuts now....

  27. Woah, two of my favourite living film composers collaborating on a single movie, holy crap! This is certainly interesting news. I was curious from the moment they announced Powell as the composer, when they pointed out that the music to the Han Solo movie will be "stylistically similar" to the Williams scores (or something like that), as if the audience needed encouragement that the score wouldn't be too different from what they're used to (because, actually, Powell has a very different style to Williams - Powell is much more pop-ish with his harmonic language*). Maybe that was a clue on their part that Williams would be contributing something... *in his film scores, I should say I'll say this much: the music is catchy as hell, but the dancing gives me nausea. I think it's because the faces aren't animated.

  28. This is not at all a best-of album of the old scores. I get the impression a Complete Score release will be a revelation for some people.

  29. Holy shit, this feels like a dream. Who would have thought we'd be getting new Williams Star Wars music in 4 months? Really starting to get spoiled here. The Last Jedi FYC just came out a couple days ago. Somebody pinch me or something.

  30. It was. But it's just to show Williams used any of his themes quite loosely. Probably to piss off the spreadsheet-obsessed fanboys. Btw do you think the new theme will feature a Cor (H)anglais solo? Karol

  31. I don't care who the PR bangs, a new Williams theme is a good thing in my book.

  32. It will also feature bonus scenes directed by Steven Spielberg.

  33. Indeed, although I hear they'd been very aggressive about their share in tickets with The Last Jedi. But its a complex thing: its different for each cinema, and changes on a weekly-basis. Also, in making such a deal, obviously one doesn't wish to just break even, or make a small profit. Although again, I'm not for a split-second thinking this wouldn't turn out to be extremely profitable for Disney. Its one of those things that they knew would make them money forever from the moment they gave it the go.

  35. Powell could do very well with Williams generated material. He's one of the few around who has the chops.

  37. Nice! And he’s replying to Alex Ross, the New Yorker’s music critic. Looks like he’s tweeted a bit about TLJ. He reviewed TFA’s score favorably too. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/listening-to-star-wars

  38. The “battle of the heros” bit in Escape can be derived from the Holdo/desperation theme in retrograde. Start in Escape with the A in the third beat of bar 4 and play the notes backwards to the start and see what you get. I could be wrong too, but to me this seems like a deliberate variation. The string figure that appears in Escape immediately after this is also melodically based on the Holdo/desperation theme (the first five notes are the same).

  39. Did anyone else catch the really cool appearance of Kylo's theme at 1:07 in "A New Alliance"? Trombones play the first three notes, and then if you listen you can hear the horns come in with the fourth note.
