  2. Why would you even care? You've spent the last 2.5 months shitcanning everything about the score, constantly reminding everyone how much you hate it, derailing any meaningful discussion about it, and insulting anyone who makes positive comments about it.

  4. HTTYD is a flawless score. I could listen to it again and again. HTTYD2 is good but HTTYD feels so much more organic IMO. I think a large reason for the successes of these scores is the stories of the films. It is very obvious in the first score, as Hiccup and Toothless grow to bond with each other, the music evolves to reflect that, and Powell does it all so lucidly. And in the final battle sequence, when Toothless is freed from the neck brace and launches out of the water, there's an equivalent "explosion" in the soundtrack as Powell brings back the Test Drive music in full force. Only this time, when the music reaches the "jet engine" moment in Test Drive, Powell instead does one of the most epic instances of VIb-I I've heard...of course, it is no "test" drive anymore. It is just such a masterpiece in terms of coherent storytelling through the medium of music and picture!

  10. There probably should not have been a Disney trilogy to begin with, let alone two. The Jedi Steps and Finale alone is enough reason to be thankful Williams took on the project.

  12. How plebeian. Ideally one invites a chamber orchestra into one's home for an intimate performance in one's parlour. Keep your messy cables and pre amplification.

  15. As a kid, I received a lot of dismissal and discouragement from family members who found my interest in film scores an annoyance and maybe even a hindrance to my development. My older brother was particularly resistant to my interest, demanding to know why I never gave a hoot about the Top 40 charts and could be a plain arsehole about some of the more overtly dramatic film scores I liked. He even insisted I was a homer sexual because of it! A publisher I worked for years ago ran a film related magazine, so I queried him on his favourite film scores and noted I was an avid collector, and he just looked down his nose at me and asked why I would listen to something that's meant to be part of the "collaborative process"? His attitude was rather dismissive and snide, so I never really spoke to him in a casual manner again. Anyone else know someone who actively dislikes film scores?

  16. I'm willing to wade through too - though with me I don't see it as "wading", but listening to and appreciating the music, which ultimately is tied to the film, so that I don't really understand the complaint of the music not being "dramatic" enough or whatever. I just think that Powell is more skillful at what he does than others (note: more skillful =/= more notes per bar, more instruments, more complex harmony and rhythm, etc...)

    John Powell kicks ass

He did a wonderful score in the late 90's called 'Endurance'. The final 11-minute cue is an early showcase why he's great, and it's imho alot better than his ADHS cartoon scores.

  28. That's easy to check. The MP3s we have from Disney's website are 192k MP3s files which have a cut frequency at 16 kHz: After ripping the CD, we just have to check if the ripped tracks have all the frequencies (between 0 Hz and 22.1 kHz) in Audacity for example. It was the case for TFA FYC where the tracks burnt on the CD were all lossless, so I believe it'll be the same for TLJ.

  36. I also wonder if, with all the experience he has gained since writing those early pieces, he listens to those works and cringes at how, if he had made just a few tweaks and alterations or done just a few things differently, the result would, to him, have sounded so much better.

  43. I don't like E.T., Hook, or 1941. I usually don't care for Williams in militaristic mode. There are swaths of the original Star Wars scores that are just completely uninteresting to me. Some Williams themes start with great promise and are then resolved in an awkward or clumsy way. He writes too many endings sometimes. Williams post 2000 >>> Williams pre 2000
