  1. It’s almost as if the film was playing with the shades of grey of leadership roles in a deliberate attempt to highlight the characters’ various flaws. The point wasn’t that either Poe or Holdo were right, it was that their respective prejudices towards each other prevented them from communicating effectively and finding the right solution. Unfortuantely we we live in a very partisan society so a lot of this subtlety was really lost in translation.

  4. Am I the only one who didn’t care much for The Rebellion is Reborn? Not that it is a bad score - by any means! - but in hindsight, it’s probably my least listened to SW score. It never settles for a mood, it jumps around too much. None of the musical ideas seem to be given time to gestate or are given room to breathe - it’s always on to the next thing. I totally get that people are in to that, but it’s just not my type of cup.

  5. Even if it's editorially created, the finale suite for TLJ (album version) does actually cover pretty much all the new thematic material from the score, including Rose's Theme, Luke's new theme, Holdo's Theme, the Desperation/Besieged Resistance motif, and the separate recurring motif that underpins key moments of the Resistance suffering defeats (such as the Resistance bombers taking each other out in Escape and again as Luke is blasted by all the AT-M6 walkers). Arguably the only other notable motif that isn't featured in the credits medley is the Canto Bight motif.

  7. I've been picking up these remasters in a haphazard way, some I've purchased such as the prequels, others I've downloaded still deciding whether it's worth purchasing them. Just listened to Empire... ...what happened? It just sounds so off, so distant and dare I say it, old. I spent a majority of last week on my commute to university listening to the 2004 Sony 2 disc edition and that has heft, it has a punch and prominence to it - it's by no means perfect or the best sounding of the three, but it sounds bright and forefront and still feels powerful. The biggest grievance I have with this 'remaster' is the complete degradation of one of my favourite musical sequences, The Battle of Hoth, with many amazing individual passages that are just buried in the mix, or buried by reverb and white noise fuzz - something best described as a ghost orgy, where it sounds dated and the opposite of a remaster. Hearing this remastered set pains me that it's 2018 and we're getting sub-par re-releases instead of fully-fledged deluxe archival editions that pay respect to the originals, provide all of the available recordings and most importantly deliver them sounding as good as is currently possible. I don't understand how these sets have been handled when we have other examples of Shawn Murphy's work which demonstrates a great ability to mix a good sounding score. Was it a bad transfer, were the tapes damaged, was this rushed out for Star Wars Day, is this a placeholder for future releases just for Disney to flex their commercial powers to try and rid people's conscience of the sony sets? Who knows?

  10. Perhaps Holdo should've told Poe, but I think what they were trying to go for was the fact that Poe isn't a hero, he is a hot-headed flyboy, it wasn't a message of blind obedience, it should've been trust in the admiral's plan and they make a point of this by having Poe act out in desperation!

  11. I absolutely love The Last Jedi! Don't get me wrong, it had it's faults, (as if any of the other Star wars movies did not, maybe not Empire so much) like I did not believe there was any chemistry between Rose and Finn, and she should have just been at the front end of the movie and not gone off ship, which would have given Del Toro more screen time with Finn and therefor a better part in the movie. But all in all it was a high stakes different movie which was all about failure and consequences.

  13. Hi Folks, Many probably know about this already from the FSM board, Facebook etc. but I am in the middle of an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to make a sci-fi short film (which will, incidentally, be scored by Ron Jones of ST:TNG and Family Guy)—my new career as a filmmaker! I am offering a wide variety of CDs, coupon codes (at Intrada, La-La Land and BuySoundtrax, anywhere from 10% to 30% off), blu rays and other items (all kindly donated to me by the labels and manufacturers). For example, La-La Land's 15CD ST:TOS box set and 50th Anniversary Collection 4CD set are available together with free shipping for $199. Please visit the campaign and view the video: http://igg.me/at/skyfighter Thank you! Lukas Kendall

  14. I went to a concert given by the Eric Whitacre Singers, conducted by the composer, a couple of weeks ago at St. James's Church in Piccadilly. It was very moving to hear You Rise, I Fall from his new work The Sacred Veil, a choral work whose text was written by one of Whitacre's close friends whose wife had died from cancer. The movement in question concerned the moment of death itself. Although it was not the final piece in the concert, when it finished there was a standing ovation. You can hear the piece in this recording from another concert at 1:39:18. I would be interested to read what others think of this piece.

  21. @Docteur Qui If only it were that simple because I think that might be the case, but not entirely so for this film. I think there are two themes that pervade the film and those are the themes of desperation and failure - desperation was the root cause for the lack of effective communication between Holdo and Poe. In the film it is unquestionably the case that Holdo was in the right and that Poe's reaction is what almost sabotages that plan. She has no obligation to tell Poe her plans - in this way I think it's a neat exposé in the sense that it's showing us a role reversal for the typical hero, that they're the center of attention or in positions of power afforded to them as a consequence of their importance in the plot. Luke in ANH is setup to be a brilliant pilot and ends up fighting for the rebels in the squadron in the end battle but I think that's only a consequence of him being the protagonist where I wouldn't necessarily find it agreeable to include a rookie recruit in such a daring battle plan. Yet in Luke's case, it could be argued that it was the Force guiding him, or the rebels are in need of pilots, or that it's simply the case that it was a nice action set-piece for the character to be involved in. Both Holdo and Leia know of Poe's heroic deeds, but both also understand that his actions are reckless - the opening space battle all but confirms this, they barely escaped losing all of their bombers, only to destroy one dreadnought ship.

  23. In those days, movies were still mixed for large theaters that added 2 seconds or more of reverb to the sound. So they mixed everything dry knowing the theater itself would add reverb when the film was projected. Small multiplex theaters/home theaters weren't a consideration yet

  25. But she "Holdo" was not a newbie, maybe that was the flaw in execution. She grew up with Leia, looked up to her all her life and was part of the resistance all along (for those of us who read Leia) maybe that should have been clearer. As for the choice to tell him or not, In any army or group, if you are demoted for failure to listen to your orders, you should not think that you should be told any plans if a commanding officer decided not to... Plus, if you look at real life and take two people in the same role. One might decide to tell him, the other not. People are all different. Stuff ike that did not bother me because I am not her, so even though I wanted her to tell him, it's her to choice to do so or not. The actual problems I had were with things like bad chemistry between two actors and shoe horning Rose into more screen time than she warranted or needed. I know people had problems with Admiral Akbar's throw away death, but even that I loved because in war, not everyone has a heroic death. Anyway, I think we hijacked the thread, lol, oops.... And I think by the end of the movie you have this great arc that because of all his failures and getting so many people killed for pretty much nothing, he learns what it really means to be a leader. It's not about the small victories, but by being strategic, and looking at the big picture and knowing when to hold back?! Just some added thoughts...

  26. The thing I just cannot stomach about TLJ is that one of the major storyline's message was the goodness of blind obedience/trust to authority (even with the added bonus that if you try to flee, you will be shot). To me that betrayed the whole point of the original saga.

    Star Wars Concert Suites

So we can add Han Solo's theme to this, yes? It joins Rey's Theme, March of the Resistance, Scherzo for X-Wings, The Jedi Steps, Jedi Steps and Finale, The Rebellion is Reborn and Han Solo and the Princess as Williams' "third age" of Star Wars concert suites. If we're super lucky, we'll get another 3 new suites in Episode IX (hopefully two new theme arrangements and an epic end credits suite to complete the trilogy of trilogies).

  35. Ok, I saw Solo yesterday. I liked it very much, although I rate TFA, TLJ and RO a bit higher. At least for now. Music is great! Above all, John Williams rules in this film! His two Han Solo themes (or two parts of one theme, I don’t know) appear in many places, usually separately. One is more marching, although it is not a march - think about the very beginning of Rey's Theme on light steroids - and the other is very heroic - a bit in the mood of the Poe's theme. Older music also appears in different arrangements, especially in the second part of the movie. Of course, we hear and , but also a bit of ... . However, there is a lot of Powell in this movie. And he put a lot of work and heart into it! The nostalgic dimension of one of the themes is not very far from his How to Train Your Dragon scores. Another theme has a very romantic feel, reminds me of Golden Age scores. And there is also a theme that sounds like a Avatar and Adiemus mixture, due to the vocalization, but it is much more wild, crazy. There are also some choirs. It's a pity that music, unlike in TLJ, loses a bit in battle scenes with sound effects, but in more intimate moments it sounds powerful. There's a lot going on here, it's hard to remember everything after watching a movie once. I can’t wait for the CD and look forward to seeing the movie again!

  38. Thought I'd revive this thread having just seen the release of a short film narrated by Olivia Colman that me and @Max McGuire scored over the last few months. The process culminated in us recording the final soundtrack with a small string ensemble at Abbey Road Studio 1 (coincidentally on the same day as Gordy Haab recorded his Battlefront DLC with the LSO, and the day after Han Solo finished overdubs in the same room!) Below is the film - I really encourage anyone to watch it, it's only 8 or so minutes and has a very important message behind it! Also is a video with a bit of session footage from the recording (both me and Max conducted a half of the score each). Would appreciate any feedback! Thanks

  39. Surprised this one hasn’t been mentioned yet! I love the herald-like Trumpets and the way Rey’s Theme and Poe’s lead up to this big statement. It feels joyous and bittersweet at the same time. 0:45
