  1. \ WOW! What a concert!!! That's my wife and me in the middle with the blue shirt, behind the really tall guy (who kept accidentally blocking my view of JW....)---- Johnny is looking right at me. Awesome picture and amazing night. The highlights for me were Memoirs of a Geisha, Adventures on Earth, and Han Solo & the Princess. JW hilariously had a slipup and started to call the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra the Boston Symphony Orchestra ---- the crowd let him have it, and he then followed up with a comment about how he will have a really tough time returning to Boston after throwing the opening pitch at the Baltimore Orioles game. Half the fun of attending a JW concert is getting these fun stories in between brilliant performances.

  2. So yeah, I went to a Jurassic Park concert of the "Orchestre à vents de musiques de films" in Montreal and after the concert was done, they decided to play another piece recently composed by John Williams... I was so happy!

  3. I had a great time at the concert last night! This was my second time seeing Williams live (the first being Lexington, Kentucky, in February 2014), and he was just as lively and exciting now as he was then. I'm so glad I was able to attend! I was sad that they didn't play "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra," but I loved getting to hear "The Adventures of Han" and the new "Han Solo and the Princess" arrangement live. Such wonderful pieces!

  4. That original program I posted ended up being the actual program. The first half concluded with Rey/RiR/Finale from Star Wars conducted by Marin. The second half of the concert concluded with Adventures On Earth conducted by Williams. The only change was that Scherzo for Motorcycle was dropped and the Adventures Of Han opened the second half of the program. I'd have rather heard Scherzo for Motorcycle, I was excited to hear that live. The encores were Han Solo And The Princess, To Lenny (conducted by Marin Alsop) and the Imperial March. The Memoirs Of A Geisha suite was freaking amazing. I have new appreciation for that score after seeing it live.

  5. The official published version on Hal Leonard Signature Series is the one JW is performing live since last year. It's pretty much the same he recorded for the Spielberg/Williams vol.3 album, but there are a couple of bars added at the beginning of the "nightmare" section (right before the ostinato begins) and a couple more in the coda during the final exposition of Sophie's theme. It looks like Williams tampered with it a few times before having it printed. The people at Hal Leonard were asked to wait for updates several times before going to print the final published version.

  8. TND is slick Bond. Definitely more to the point formula wise. But Goldeneye has more for me. The post Cold War setting, rather intricate, though not perfect, plot, very good cinematography, grittier villians, Brosnan's best performance as Bond (very solid here), and Izabella Scorupco, definitely an above average "Bond girl."

  10. Haha! So clever! This alone invalidates your entire rant. Last Crusade has an excellent score, and is very effective in the film.

  11. I went to the concert too! Absolutely loved Adventures of Han (when am I ever going to hear that live again? Probably never)!! E.T. and Shark Cage Fugue were also incredible! I loved that we got Williams pieces from all three of the new movies he's done. And the Throne Room . . . incredible. I loved that they used the Revenge of the Sith end credits Throne Room suite; that's always been my favorite end credits suite of all time. I actually teared up during those moving renditions of the B section of the Throne Room; it was so emotional and well-played. Agggh! Why can't he do five more of these performances in Baltimore before he leaves? I need to attend more film music concerts.

  12. Hopefully sometime soon there will be a special edition with momentum killing shots of Rey walking from place to place, saying "Alert the Millennium Falcon to prepare for my arrival," and then landing Snoke's shuttle near the Falcon. For the most part, this thread just reminds me how grateful I am that I can sit down and lose myself in a movie and just go for the ride the filmmakers want to take me on without dissecting it within an inch of its life while I'm watching.

  13. My main issues are: The Finn-Rose storyline, in its entirety. Some of the humor doesn't work. The production isn't as polished as The Force Awakens. More generally, the film just lacks any form of restraint: you can just feel Rian Johnson saying "more twists, more jokes, more themes, more camera flourishes, more, more, more!" Especially with his constant need to surprise the audience, his film just ends up feeling overbearing. Connected to that, some of the visual comedy and surprises in the story really feel like they parody Star Wars. As a casual fan, I don't care; but I can see how more ardent fans would be offended by that.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

I feel much of the backlash against these new SW movies comes down to entitlement; plain and simple. Everyone has been conditioned that complaining will yield instant gratification, and that their tantrums and fits are to be validated and not ignored.

Don't any of you ever want to talk about movies you like instead of endlessly going round in circles pointing out the same "flaws" (in the eye of the beholder) in TLJ over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over?

  19. One thing I really like about this one is the use of the choir. In the first one it appeared, but more disperse, playing with great effect in the final moments of the movie, but here you can hear it almost from the beginning as an individual force that helps the score to sound much more intense and emotional. Especially with the Fallen Kingdom theme.

  20. Who cares?! If I enjoy the story, I can't be bothered with each individual beat and every little detail of production design. The question is whether the piece works as a whole, which it brilliantly does.

    The NINTENDO Thread

The NES port is three screens, the arcade is four. The third cement factory screen was removed from the port for memory reasons presumably. The screen resolution and aspect ratio is different as well. Other than those obvious differences I’m not sure. Experts could say. This is definitely an archival release and not for everyone. I still have fun with the original Donkey Kong. Fun pick-up-and-play high score attack gameplay. But yeah it’s an almost 40 year old game and therefore nothing more than a novelty for most. Its place in gaming history is gargantuan of course as the first game designed by Miyamoto, Nintendo’s first arcade hit, and widely agreed to be the first true platformer.

  26. Here's a breakdown of the suite 0:00-1:02 = The Adventure Theme from Williams' Jurassic Park score, basically the same as the standard concert arrangement. 1:02-2:04 = The Main Theme from Giacchino's first Jurassic World Score, basically the same as "The Park Is Closed" from the first OST (including Williams theme partial cameo at the end) 2:04-3:20 = New Theme #1 (Fallen Kingdom Theme?), the one introduced at the end of "This Title Makes Me Jurassic" and then appears in "Nostalgia-Saurus", "Wilting Iris", "Thus Begins The Indo-Rapture", "You Can Be So Hard-Headed", "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Free", "World's Worst Bedtime Storyteller", "Declaration of Indo-Pendence" and "The Neo-Jurassic Age" 3:20-3:40 = B Section of the Fallen Kingdom Theme, which only appears in the main score in "World's Worst Bedtime Storyteller" and "The Neo-Jurassic Age" 3:40-4:11 = Fallen Kingdom Theme 4:11-4:31 = Fallen Kingdom Theme B Section 4:31-5:18 = Fallen Kingdom Theme 5:18-6:40 = New Theme #2 (For now I'll call it the Quiet Theme), also heard in "The Theropod Preservation Society", "Volcano to Death", "Operation Blue Blood", and "To Free or Not to Free". 6:40-7:45 = New Theme #3 (For now I'll call it the March Theme), also heard in "March of the Wheatley Cavalcade" and "Raiders of the Lost Isla Nublar" 7:45-8:08 = non-thematic bridging material that was re-used in "Go With the Pyroclastic Flow" 8:08-8:28 = Fallen Kingdom Theme B Section 8:28-9:00 = Fallen Kingdom Theme 9:00-9:20 = Fallen Kingdom Theme B Section 9:20-9:57 = Fallen Kingdom Theme 9:57-10:35 = non-thematic bridging material that was re-used in "This Title Makes Me Jurassic" 10:35-end = Fallen Kingdom Theme Again I haven't seen the film so don't know what these themes represent.

  27. Kamino looks cool, I guess. I also guess that I kind of respect Lucas for trying something new with the digital cameras, but as many have said for years, it's hilarious that the two that "pushed the envelope" are future-proofed for all time. I actually like the look of Phantom Menace, I think it has a nice balance between sets, location, and green screen. Really, its aesthetics aren't that far removed from The Force Awakens, which people seem to be really selective about mentioning.

  28. As far as returning themes go, the main Jurassic Park theme only returns in cameos - the concert arrangement intro appears in "The Theropod Preservation Society" and "To Free or Not to Free", and the B section of the theme appears in "Nostalgia-Saurus". The actual main part of the main theme DOES appear in "Volcano to Death" in a sad, defeated way, but it's cut off before finishing the entire theme. The first 3 notes of the B section also appear in the End Credits track at the end of the same arrangement of the main Jurassic World theme that was heard in "This Park Is Closed" from the first Jurassic World album. The Adventure Theme gets a big runthrough in the first minute of "At Jurassic World's End Credits / Suite", and that's it. No Carnivore theme. Returning from the first Jurassic World score, his Main Theme returns in 6 tracks (2, 4, 9, 24, 25, 26), the Owen's Raptor Squad theme returns 19, 20, and 24, and the Indominous Rex theme is in tracks 1 and 23 (This Title Makes Me Jurassic and Declaration of Indo-Pendence). The Family Theme and Hoskins/In-Gen theme don't return at all. New themes: The new main theme (Fallen Kingdom Theme?) is introduced at the end of the first track [2:27-end] and gets a big concert arrangement in the Suite from 2:04-5:18 and then again from 8:28-end. There's a 16 note quiet theme in "The Theropod Preservation Society" [0:36-1:07] and "Operation Blue Blood" [0:46-end] that gets a spot in the Suite from 5:18-6:40. There's a 16 note march-like theme that appears in "March of the Wheatley Cavalcade" from 0:15-0:35 and then shows up in the Suite from 6:40-7:45. There's an ominous theme that opens "Go With the Pyroclastic Flow" [0:00-0:14] and also appears in the Suite from 7:45-8:08 There's also a twinkly theme that appears interspersed with the main theme in the suite (ie 3:20-3:40 and 4:11-4:31 during the first part and 8:08-8:28 and 9:00-9:20) during the second part)... but I don't know if this is truly a separate theme or just a B-section of the new main theme. There's probably more new stuff I haven't unpacked yet. I haven't seen the film so have no idea what any of the themes could represent. The suite is a pretty damn great track, I wish it appeared in its own track not connected to the first 2 minutes of old theme retreads, though.

  29. Now up for sale in countries where it's already Friday https://itunes.apple.com/nz/album/1391415975 https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/1391415975 etc Here's my initial impressions of the album after first listen Overall I guess it's pretty good, I suppose I like it more than the first score (certainly more than the first OST album). I think he does some things much better than the first score, but other things not as well. The strongest part of the album is definitely the end, like the last third maybe. Some of the percussion-based action material towards the end is fresh and exciting. I really liked the parts of the score where he takes his JW1 themes and reworks them for the new score. Owen's Raptor Squad theme especially sounds great. Most of the new themes are not very in-your-face, and didn't leave much of a strong impression on me at all. Subsequent listens should help.

  32. Spiderman 2 is really good, but not the best. The Spiderman trilogy is somehow like the X-Men trilogy: Part 1: meh Part 2: great Part 3: meh I think, it's really rare that only the second part of a trilogy is really good.

  33. @Batman's Diet Coke I agree Spider-Man 2 is the best Marvel film. For me it's the only superhero film that transcended the gimmickry of the comics to find a balance between the tone and embraced the cinematic qualities without losing the heart of the character. Brilliant action set-pieces, great drama between the characters - the dynamic between Peter/MJ/Harry is developed well and the villain isn't a generic cardboard cut-out 'I'm a bad guy, doing bad things' type of character, he has motivations, isn't evil - misguided and vengeful for the failure of his life's work. The X-Men trilogy and Spider-Man Homecoming I think are up there with Spidey 2, if Homecoming had a cohesive story and focused more on Peter I think I'd place it higher.

  34. Definitely. Doc Ock is still one of the best superhero villains ever, and Spider-Man's character progression is second to none. Also few modern superhero films have an action sequence that's as thrilling and as well-done as this.

  37. That's too bad. The clip features an interview with the screenwriter and some of the cast members plus quite a bit about the music that Sol Kaplan provided for the episode. He's a big part of the sound of TOS since he scored so many memorable episodes. They compare the music to jaws with its unrelenting two note ostinato.

  38. It's just not that big a deal, since you have both options. And if you're lucky, you get a good dramatic actor enhancing a limited star performance (though this was more the norm in older times, when there were quite a lot of brilliant german theatre actors dubbing in their spare time, i. e., the likes of George Lazenby who suddenly appeared a major acting talent.
