  1. It's always what I loved about John Williams, he provides the right score that fit to the movie, always. And his range is impressive. He can score the most dark movie to the most glorious and epic one... and also those little romantic flicks. He can be discreet sometimes and bombastic when it's needed. He masters the world music too... he can add a savor from any country or region you want: Ireland, Asia, Africa, Israel, Tibet, Americana, UK, Latin America, etc. Classical music, great choral works, jazz, military marches, he can do eveything! He's really like: "What do you want? I will try to do it".

  2. Sorry to interrupt that discussion but I just can't stop marvelling at the way the Minas Tirith theme is played (after equally lovely attacca transition from Caras Galadhon/Lament for Gandalf) by solo horn and trumpet at the beginning of The Mirror of Galadriel on the LotR CR! So beautiful and poignant, and absolutely perfect for the scene between Aragorn and Boromir which the music accompanies.

  3. Perfect scoring by Shore. I remember getting emotional while watching the film with the music accompanying Sean Bean's words. Absolute poetry. Shore captures that feeling of both nostalgia and the glory and majesty of Gondor as remembered by Boromir intertwined with longing. Just brilliant!

  4. ^ Interesting thread, @Drew. Some commentators are definitely hard on Balfe, but they're pretty respectful about it and I'd say they do have pretty legitimate concerns. Ultimately, the sense I get is that Balfe treated this as an ordinary film scoring assignment. He has a lot of big projects and this was just one among many. Kraemer, by contrast, seems to have taken a lot more time, and had a lot more fun, with the pure musical experience, and gone over-the-top, far beyond what the film needed, to make a personal piece of art. So a normal effort like Balfe's will pale in comparison if you're looking for thematic and orchestral complexity. Add in the fact that many here hate Balfe's style and it's not surprising that some would be very frustrated. I'm enjoying parts of Balfe's score more after additional listens (e.g. the Paris escape cue), but I agree that it seems like he didn't put the kind of fine-tuned effort in that Kraemer did. I could be wrong, though. "Simple" music could sometimes have taken much time and thought to produce, as posters like TGP repeatedly remind us.

  9. I can post cartoon stuff too! (Remember when people talked about Mark Hamill in a context not surrounded by controversy?) Well gee, ya don't say? The second Paper Mario is indeed awesome; the one on the Wii U was part of my training at Nintendo. That area where your identity is stolen is one of my favorites in a game, I love the mood of that village so much. Crap, now I want to play through that game again.

Star Wars - The Clone Wars

Yes it’s too kiddy but it’s very inconsistent in terms of characterization (especially Ezra) and most of it is just boring as hell. Or extremely annoying. TCW really picked up midway through season 3. There’s some good stuff in the 2.5 seasons before that but it’s hit or miss. A lot of it gets better once you’ve seen the whole thing but there was a point in season 3 where it just took off and was largely magnificent from there on out. Few bumps but still amazing overall.

  15. I go through phases where I really burn myself out on LOTR and have to cut it cold turkey so I can listen to it with fresher ears. I've been there for 2018. I'm listening to only new albums, and sloooooowly going alphabetically through my other scores and giving them good listens. I own some scores I've only listened to once or twice. Anyway, I'll get to L eventually and I bet it'll be glorious. FOTR is definitely my favorite score.

  16. It's so bizarre to me that anyone who is completely anonymous on a forum would spend their free time doing that. It's not like he used his real name. If he wanted to leave JWFan behind, all he had to do was just never log in here again. Nobody he knows IRL or online would ever connect him to here. Ditto for Bloodboal, who was even more anonymous. S'weird.

For instance: 02 Prologue 08 Wings & Blasters 09 Utmost Ghost 04 World's Greatest Grandma etc. etc. Or often both, such as: 01 OST02 Prologue 02 OST08 Wings & Blasters 03 OST09 Utmost Ghost 04 OST04 World's Greatest Grandma etc. etc.

  19. Angela's Ashes by John Williams: Somehow listening to this gorgeous score eases the pain of the intolerable heat wave we are experiencing here. The soloist work here is equally beautiful, cello, piano, harp and oboe featured throughout and the studio musicians must have been thrilled that they got to perform something written exclusively for them like the solo harp piece The Lanes of Limerick. The Lost World: Jurassic Park by John Williams: Tremendous, tremendous, perhaps even superb.

  20. Miklós's first Oscar win, not totally deserved, one might say, though inevitable with that prize. The Theremin might have found its first place in a Hollywood film here, but it's the ultra-lyrical love theme that swayed voters. It's a very respectable dramatic/romantic composition with several long interludes (the longest runs 16 uninterrupted minutes!) done in Rózsa's authorative style, and as such warrants a listen. For beginners, 'El Cid', 'Thief of Bagdad', 'Ben-Hur' or 'Ivanhoe' still would be first choice.

  21. Maybe a pretty generic comment, but Wes Anderson called Williams a great composer a few months ago, I think it is the first time I have ever heard Anderson comment on Williams: "Alexandre has that in common with great composers like John Williams that he is able to write a music of film that can be whistled, a music that finally lives independently of the film. He enjoys composing, but he also has that innate sense of orchestration. He began as a jazz musician and this is reflected in his compositions."

  23. Upon his rejection, Elmer Bernstein reportedly wrote a thank you-letter to Demi Moore: now he could use his music in a better movie. And he's right, it's a very lyrical-yet-varied effort full of interesting instrumental choices (string orchestra, male chorus, vocalise, bagpipes, woodwinds). Much better than Barry's monochrome schmaltz (he reportedly hated the movie, too).

  26. Well, I've never really ventured around this forum beyond the "General Discussion" and John Williams sections until now! So this was a pleasant surprise to come across. I'm mainly into cartoon platformers, the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Rayman, 2D Sonic, A Hat in Time, Psychonauts, Shantae, Sly Cooper, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, and the first Jak & Daxter (the sequels sucked). Among many others, but that's what first came to mind. I mainly was raised on PS1 and 2, and didn't have access to the Nintendo library of platformers until recent years. The Mario Galaxy games were amazing, as are the two Banjo-Kazooie games (Tooie moreso of the twosome). I admit that I found the Donkey Kong Country a bit too exhausting in their difficulty for my tastes, but I recognize I'm just a wimp. As far as non-platformers go, well, Kingdom Hearts 3 is pre-ordered, so there you have it. A contender for my all-time favorite game is Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. While I didn't get to own it until recently, I would borrow a friend's Gamecube just for that one a LOT as a kid.

  38. Every single time (and I do mean every single time) I've listened to Lost World in the presence of grandpa, he mistakes it for Alan Silvestri. Including today's listen. "This sounds nothing like John Williams! He must have been so bored with this movie!" "You say that every time I play this one, and with each utterance, you lose more credibility." -some time later- "Okay, THAT cue was AWESOME! What was that one?" "That was Ripples, and you've said that about five times today."

  40. So last night I downloaded a few of these. I started listening to the Spotting Session for Star Wars, thinking I'd do half an hour before bed and then finish it off today. I ended up listening to the whole thing-it was awesome. You guys have some nice insight, great commentary (all the volume and sound works great-well put together show!), and you really keep the storyline moving through the score- something which I love to try and piece together as I listen to my favourite soundtracks! It is also a very knowledgeable breakdown which delves deeper without exaggeration or romanticizing the score. It was a fun and holding listen, and I can't wait for Part 2!

  41. Thank you! So pleased you're enjoying the show :) We posted the next episode in our STAR WARS arc just this morning. 42. Yeah as far as I can tell. I know of score podcasts that are dedicated to covering single film scores, but that's different. My favorite episodes so far are probably 5 through 7, mostly because I got hear to more of Goldsmith's TV work, which is something I have yet to really explore. Wish more of it was directly available on its own, but I understand why it isn't. A Marriage of Strangers sounds like fantastic "dramatic" proto-60's Goldsmith for example. As for strengths / weaknesses. I'd say that you guys are really are passionate about scoring and Jerry's work in particular, and it really shows. I do wish you that you would maybe discuss the scores a bit even more in detail, but that's more of a personal nitpick and me being selfish then anything, as I just love to hear about score discussions in general, and sometimes wish they would never end. I can't wait till you get to discussing the essential scores in Goldsmith's filmography, and his changing styles over the years. Keep up the good work.

  43. But it's also the only album specifically dedicated to that score, and as a title completist, I need to have it. 'Complete' is an unfortunate side-effect. Someone said this was an 'essential' JW album. I don't consider it that at all. Mostly for JW collectors.

  44. The fact that the CD has been produced and mixed by Mike Matessino adds those extra little stars needed to pass the test. This is now an essential in our collections.
