  1. Best composer? No. Best film composer? No. One of the very few who seems deeply competent and thoughtful and capable of great stuff? Yes. No people like to rank shit because it makes them more certain that their entirely subjective feelings are somehow true and they know better than everyone else.

  6. It is excellent. Jerry brilliantly translates the musical style of the region into orchestral form and writes a rousing main theme and a gorgeous love theme to boot. It is David Lean styled epic canvas for which I wish Jerry had had a chance to write more.

  10. Yep He put a portion of the choral alternate on the OST, then on the CR he put a longer version of the choral alternate in the same track as the film version, then on the Rarities Archive he finally released the full choral alternate in its own track. He must have really liked that passage to release it three times

  11. John Williams - Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone What a glorious score; Williams took to the material with aplomb and really thoughtfully came up with a number of motifs and themes that all play off each other in fun ways, plus so many instances of interesting incidental music in between all that, and source music and 45 minutes of concert arrangements to boot! What a amazing work, especially coming off something so deep and introspective in A.I. Artificial Intelligence. What a year this guy had. John Williams - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets I just love this score; Taking the groundwork laid out by the first score and mixing in a handful of strong new themes is everything I want from a sequel score. Of course it's a bummer that Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can overlapped and so much incidental HP1 music was reworked to fit scenes he didn't write anything original for, but that doesn't really bother me in the end, I just love all of this. John Williams - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban I love how Williams dropped everything from the first score except Hedwig's Theme (and Nimbus 2000 in a re-written cue) and crafted that basically entirely new score with a new sound that still fits into the magical world established by the first two. The medieval stylings are so cool as are the new themes and choral work. I even like the tik tok effect for the time travel sequence. Really cool score.

  14. Change isn't always good... This isn't some social construct that you're dismantelling with the idea of "equality of outcome" - you're trying to go against something that is, appearantly, hard-wired into our species. It isn't. Just how much of it's genetic and how much of it is socially constructed is unclear, but what is clear is that you're downplaying the part of the hereditery component here.

  16. Exactly. MV first posted that Schindler's List was coming in December, then later posted that their BF batch was their final batch of the year. This could mean that Schindler's List was pushed back to 2019, pushed forward to Black Friday, or was always intended for Black Friday and saying December was more of a general thing since historically, the Black Friday titles are of course announced on Black Friday, but actually start shipping in December; Thanksgiving and therefore Black Friday is on the earlier side this year so this particular year it will actually still be November when they start shipping.

  17. 'Savareen Stand-Off' is when Enfys Nest arrives on Savareen and confronts the gang, and has her chat with them afterwards. 'Good Thing You Were Listening' is Han shooting Beckett first, and an alternate?? for Q'ira flying off, leaving Han on Savareen 'Testing Allegiance' comes before that in film order, and is for the Han/Dryden/Q'ira fight, and Han subsequently going off to save Chewie, then Q'ira preparing to make a Skype call. (Though some early parts are different in the film version) The other bits on Savareen are found in 'The Good Guy', and consist of: i) Han chatting to Q'ira in the tent ("You are the good guy" etc.) ii) Beckett saying goodbye to Han and leaving the gang iii) Han and Q'ira going to, and talking in the lift in Dryden's yacht iv) Dryden threatening Q'ira, and his enforcers getting wrecked by Enfys So chronologically, it'd be: The Good Guy pt 1 Savareen Stand-Off The Good Guy pt 2-4 Testing Allegiance Good Thing You Were Listening Hope this helps!

    Star Wars Disenchantment

🤣 Episode IX is going to be a box office success. I guarentee that. Whether its going to be a terribly good movie? I'm not too optimistic, actually. Last entries in a trilogy don't have the best of track records. That is correct. That's a terrible explanation! Not that Rian Johnson's any better, he just let Snoke explain that Rey was born to be as strong as Kylo as part of the natural balance. They way Rey is infinitely capable in The Force Awakens was such that the filmmakers wrote themselves - and any other filmmaker approaching the character - into a corner. The only believable way to explain it was to connect her to an established, powerful lineage from the earlier films - which would have been cheesy and anticlimactic as hell. I never expected Johnson to go there, and it was better to just eschew an explanation alltogether, really. I will say, I don't mind her uber-competence as much as you do. I find the characters' internal state much more significant than their capabilities. Rey, more in The Force Awakens but in this one, still - is filled with self-deprecation and doubts. 'Tis bollocks. There's no evidence to back this rumor up. The only reason this narrative exists is that Johnson's and JJ's films are so diametrically opposed: one is a retread of an existing film, the other - goes against that film (at least, superficially) at every chance it gets. That doesn't mean that the filmmakers themselves are diametrically opposed in their opinions. You do of course know that JJ is an executive producer on this entire trilogy, right? He will have seen Johnson's film take shape, and approved of it. JJ just had to make a "safe", formulaic film: The Force Awakens just had too much riding on its back to take too many chances. I doubt he really wanted to make a deriviative film, and I don't expect him to make one with IX, either. Wait, you expected Luke's desperation not to be presistent throughout a large portion of this film? You expected him to gather his wits within twenty or thirty minutes and go join the good guys?! That's as stupid as anything that's actually in The Last Jedi, I'm afraid. As for his astral projection: well, it was more conducive to what he was trying to do than actually showing up. I will admit that his death may feel somewhat unearned. If he had died in IX I think it would have felt more naturally earned. I'll wait till after IX to pass judgment, but yeah, the entire concept's flawed. Return of the Jedi closed the book on Star Wars. It didn't do a terrific job of it, but it did it, nonetheless. So there's really no reason for more episodes other than that "George always intended to make nine films" bollocks and "give us money!" Still, we'll see if IX can somehow manage to tie everything together. Just to speak to this point: while I dissaprove of Kathleen Kennedy's behind-the-scenes gender-equity policy (i.e. the idea that the work-place should be split 50/50 gender-wise) I don't know quite how much that spills into the actual film. Yeah, the ratio in the onscreen cast is getting closer to 50/50 (which I suppose in the action/adventure genre would be disconcerting) but expressions of outright toxic feminism are few and far in between, and are never all that blatant, anyway. The closest thing to it is actually in The Force Awakens when Rey consistently has an issue with Finn who, out of nothing but good intentions, grabs her by the hand. There's nothing of this sort in The Last Jedi. All you're pointing to are incidental things that occur as part of the plot - not an actual talking point in the movie.

  19. You're being real cute right now. Chill out, you don't have to be a snob to dislike a movie, amigo. As an adult, no, I can't see why it became such a part of zeitgeist it has, where it's entered the "Bible" area of pop culture. But I can imagine this movie being a real trip and treat as a kid, one that really gets the imagination going.

  25. Zimmer is far from a 4 chord composer. Imitations often devolve into such things but the man's music itself is harmonically very fresh. I don't think this is the great thing that you seem to think it is, and I doubt if many classical snobbists would be much moved by the argument - if anything it strengthens their typical complaints, that Williams is a recycler of past ideas who never improves on them and brings nothing new to the scene himself. I also think it is a little silly to say that there will only be few who could write using those ideas without Williams. The classical world is ripe with such talent and ability.

  26. Dracula A.D. 1972 (you know) Well, I expected some lowly trash comedy with the Count exploring the nightlife of Londontown, but this is more boring than anything else. "Guys, what do we do for the 93rd Dracula sequel?" "Eh, just bring him into the present, it'll be cheaper to just go out on the street". Parroting myself here, but Cushing's the stable point.

  28. Yeah Zimmer is probably the only "old" master who could still by some stretch be said to be currently working. None of the next generation have distinguished themselves on that level yet, not even Alexandre. I am loathe to add to the chorus of Giacchino smack talk since I had such high hopes for him after Lost but the man needs a brush up on orchestration and recording for starters. Desplat at least has a much firmer grasp of sonics.

  30. If it's a horror score, I hope it'll be The Final Conflict or The Mephisto Waltz, but not Damien: Omen II. Concerning the latter, I don't see the possibility of a substantial sound improvement. If it's not a horror score, I hope it'll be Air Force One or U.S. Marshals. Classic expansion wish list attendees.

  34. another reason why 4 needs an expansion is because the sessions are so damaged. Anyway, it wouldn't be fair to just expand 1-3.
    1 point
  35. Depends on the movie. Often an open matte film technically was presented in "full frame" if it was a 4:3 release. Early Warner DVDs did this using flipper discs, with the anamorphically enhanced 16:9 version on one side, and the 4:3 full frame version on the other side. Of course, pan and scan is utterly unacceptable on a film shot in anamorphic, but films shot in Super 35 and reframed for television are doing exactly what they were designed for.

  36. I thought it neat that instead of the TARDIS door to the outside simply appearing flush on the side of the larger interior set, they actually have the three sides of the police box as a mini-lobby or tunnel on the side, before stepping into the larger room. As if to show us how truly small the inside of the police box is. If that happened earlier, I don't remember it.

  37. The sessions will obviously have more content than the LLL release, but considering most of the sessions consisted of incorrect or early takes with performances Williams wouldn't have approved, it's more of a curiosity than anything else. All the substantial or noteworthy alternates/inserts will be included at the end of CD2, no doubt.

  39. It's a real great emotional human drama at its core, and there are also fantastic scenes set in a space shuttle that were straight-up thrilling to watch. It's probably my favorite movie of the year. It's just an example of everything firing on so many cylinders, and Gosling's performance is terrific. As soon as I got out of the theater, I knew I wanted to see First Man a second time, which is much rarer these days. I was beyond super impressed.

  40. That was quite a scene with an explosive and nicely voiced G minor chord. I think part of why it was so arresting is we hadn't heard big music yet. Lots of intimate music and extremely loud sound design but no big music. I thought this was the family theme since we hear it when the family is playing around in a beautiful cue called Armstrong cabin. I remember thinking how lovely it was on joyful people before the terrifying rockets are shown. Perhaps it is more of a karen theme so interesting to have it here on the first expansive shot of the lunar surface and a tiny fragile ship. Did you see it in IMAX? Looking forward to your detailed review and our subsequent discussion.

  42. I really doubt that'll happen. Just seems like a made up rumour with no weight behind it. But hey, if it means getting 6 more hours of John Williams Star Wars music, I won't complain! Hard to believe he's written over 6 hours in the last ~3 years alone.

  43. 1980 version: 2018 version: The 1980 is the definitive concert piece on the theme of these characters’ romance in ESB. It IS “Han Solo and the Princess from The Empire Strikes Back.” The 2018 is a wistful, thoughtful, grand piece exploring (Leia contemplating?) the vast sweep of the characters’ history together — their ESB romance, the tragedy of their son and their estrangement, their reuniting, and Han’s death. Also, on a meta level, Carrie Fisher’s death. So to me it’s more a sequel to the original than an “arrangement.” If pressed, I rank the original slightly higher, but admittedly nostalgia plays a role. ESB means more to me, and young love is thrilling. But to me they serve different narrative functions.
