  1. I know I said I gave up with this thread, but, I've got to say @Mattris, your above post is your crowning achievement. You may now retire knowing you can never top it. Don't try, please don't.

It's sad to think he actually took the time to copy and paste all those quotes for them to be ultimately useless. Who gives a flying fig what people are saying in the comments of Variety, let alone the comments made on this humble forum?

  7. I like TFA. Exceptionally strong, not only Jedi Steps with its striking new melodic material, but also the concise, engaging way the themes of the score are presented afterwards. Good stuff all around.

  13. 1:40 = chills There are so many moments in this score where Williams channels a more unadulterated vein of high fantasy that you don't really hear often from his pen. Probably because these bigger pictures usually encourage him to be rooted in more traditional, or even conservative symphonic film conventions (think HP1 vs. HP3). I still think this is one his career highs:

  14. But since SW is not only action music i would have been very interested what he came up with thematically and idiomatically for the broader canvas. Certainly not those half-assed brass triplets and one-finger piano tunes.

  17. I thought it would be helpful to group all of John Williams' film scores by the studio that owns the rights. It helps to figure out what might be coming out by a label if they release some clues, etc. Beyond that, it's just kind of interesting to see what studios John has worked the most and least for. And which studios have been the best and worst at licensing their properties out to the specialty labels. This is basically an updated version of this original post here. 19. Reading this interminable thread, this is one of your arguments, Mattris, that sticks in my craw. The language is “shameful, demeaning” when it comes from LUcasfilm, but not if it comes from a vicious, vocal minority—who in your view is just “concerned/upset”. The double standard is breathtaking here. “People don’t appreciate being insulted,” you say, but those people are the ones hurling insults in the first place.

  24. Really? I think digital projection is downright terrible with awful image quality (at least in the theatres in my city). It's the main reason why I never go see movies in theatres. Nothing beats a German 35mm/70mm film projector and a fresh release print. For Drax & Dynamic: Ciné Trinitron

  25. While it might have been Cuaron who demanded a different approach, Williams must have been very happy to oblige since he usually prefers to write something new rather than purely revisit the old with the sequels. Still he manages to retain the same HP world feel throughout even without constant quotes of the older material. And again in this case the end result is brilliant.

  34. It really depends on where in London you want to get to, how much time you have and how much money you want to spend. If you are heading to Paddington or somewhere near there, the Heathrow Express is definitely the quickest because it takes about 16 or 17 minutes and does not stop anywhere else once it leaves the airport. However, it is much more expensive than using TfL Rail or the Tube (Piccadilly line) and, as mentioned previously, you cannot use Oyster or contactless cards to pay for journeys on the Heathrow Express. I have never used the Heathrow Express myself but a quick look at their website suggests that a peak single fare is an eye-watering £27. Unless time is a factor for you, the journey time to central London on the Piccadilly line is not exactly arduous (only 40 minutes to South Kensington with no changes, for example). Alternatively, TfL Rail services run the same route into London Paddington as the Heathrow Express but stop at six or seven stations, so the journey takes about 28 minutes. Again, that's hardly the Trans-Siberian express.

  35. I've told you: it wasn't possible. I tried it, my friends tried it, work colleagues tried it. It could not be done. I've had a lot of counseling about this. Why did you have to bring it up. Why? Why?! 😭

  36. Inky, in the age of the interweb thingy, ignorance is no excuse . 43 years ago, I'd never heard of a guy called John Williams. All I knew was that he had written some music that I liked. I did some research, and voilà, three years later, I had a burgeoning record collection. Same with Goldsmith, Barry, etc. It's not hard to go to YouTube, and type "James Bernard", or "Brian Easdale".

  43. But @mstrox's point stands. Also, JJ Abrams is a dude who really seems to love what he does, but does anyone consider him an original storyteller? I'm not just talking on a superficial "Force Awakens apes the original" play-by-play list.
