  1. This concert was absolutely wonderful. Flawless performance. LA Phil recorded it for commercial release I believe. The announcer said "silence the phones and don't applaud till music is finished because it is being recorded for a future release". I would expect if it was for the radio they would have said for future broadcast. Regardless, it was so good - the concert hall has excellent acoustics for this type of detailed music. It was a little distracting watching Johnny listen to his own music but the whole sold out audience seemed to envelop him with love and admiration. Dudamel would frequently bow to him during the performance and everyone enjoyed watching the nonverbal exchange of joy, passion, and musicianship. The sonorities were so refined and richly detailed, bombastic and intense when needing to be. Program: Olympic Fanfare and Theme (with the mighty organ) Close Encounters suite (excellent half diminished flat 5 to tonic, @Ludwig with glorious harp gliss'...you would approve) Shark Cage Fugue/Out to Sea from Jaws Harry Potter Suite (Hedwig's Theme, Fawkes the Phoenix, Harry's Wondrous World) Schindler's List theme Adventures on Earth from E.T. -Intermission- Flight to Neverland from Hook Jurassic Park theme (sounded amazing with five unison trumpets and a very emphatic ending) Indiana Jones (Motorcycle Scherzo, Marion's Theme, Raiders March) Suyuri's Theme from Geisha Star Wars (Imperial March (imagine hearing it with 8 horns, 5 trombones, 5 trumpets, 8 percussionists at Disney Hall...never heard it sound so good), Yoda's Theme, Throne Room and Finale from Star Wars) Encore: Williams's Adagio for Strings (<-- gorgeous this!) Superman March It was a long concert - ending around 10:30pm with several video clips. I especially enjoyed during the Throne Room, they played scenes from the 8 star wars films including scoring session photos from all of them. JW looked great, happy, energetic, and deeply moved by the performance and audience enthusiasm. Sorry the video with Dudamel talking is hard to hear, he didn't have a mic. IMG_4574.MOV IMG_4578.MOV

  9. Pretty clear you haven't actually heard CHARIOTS. "Eric's Theme" is my favourite, even more than the iconic main theme.

  10. I never liked Underdog. Polly Purebred got on my nerves, especially her whining that "oh where oh where has my underdog gone" song.

  11. Chariots is hummable but Raiders is iconic. CoF isn't even in its league. Other than the main title is actually a bad electronic bit of noise. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a five-star score Vangelis Chariots of Fire is worthy of no more than two stars

  13. Naw. Raiders is a mighty fine adventure film score. Chariots of Fire is a masterpiece of electronic film scoring. @Ricard you disagree?

  14. No he did not. Williams deserved an Oscar for film years 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1984.

  15. I have to say both tracks "the Bio-ship/Exploring the Hull" and "Exploring the Bio-Ship" are indeed wonderful, they certainly have a "Shadows of the Empire" vibe to them..

  16. The Oscars for 1982 were held in 1983. 1982 was not just great. It was the greatest.

  17. I believe Joey was talking about the film year, not the ceremony year, but I could be wrong. I definitely think of these as the 2018 Oscars, personally. I’ve never liked referring to them by the ceremony date.

  18. I weeped with joy over the beautiful images in Skyfall! Ultimately it really depends on the artist. Not the tool. Deakins likes digital, that's enough for me.

  22. Yes. 35mm film might have a higher resolution then digital, but it also has certain properties that work against image sharpness and clarity. I saw the "unrestored" 2001 in the cinema last year, taken straight from the original negative and it looked a bit unsharp. You could also say digital tends to look too sharp, too clear and too bright and colourful though these days. But that probably also has more to do with trends in digital grading. Everything gets tuned too 11.

  23. I think season 3 definitely attempts to find a way to wrap up this crazy story, and is one of the more entertaining seasons of the three, however, I found myself kinda deflated by the ending and how it all wraps up. So much was building and building and new villains introduced and subplots that it felt like they were rushing to get the story done this season instead of devoting time to the later episodes which is where I think they really needed to flesh things out. I'd say, overall it's a good watch, but I would've liked to have seen the tone a closer match to the books and the 2004 film which found a perfect balance between the dark humor and the seriousness of the Baudelaire's plight. Don't skip it, but don't get your expectations up either.

  24. It is dangerous and disingenuous to suggest without evidence that something nefarious is at play here. US vets all visa applicants. Maybe something turned up in his background check. How would we know this? There are literally hundreds of thousands of people who apply for visas to visit the US per year and they do get visas.

  26. Murder On The Orient Express by Richard Rodney Bennett Great score. Classical and tight. Nice balance of mood and thematic material. Kind of a throwback score in spots. Mary, Queen Of Scots by John Barry Brilliant score. Ahead of its time in spots. Mary's Theme is very nice, but the fanfare material is what really drew me in. Barry seems very careful not to over-score the picture. His writing seems precise, even sparse at times. The result sounds remarkably fresh. Somewhere In Time by John Barry This score is done in a more vintage style. But, the craftsmanship is here is superb. No wasted notes, really. Lovely indeed.

  30. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in the Hollywood studios, we shall fight on the recording stages and mixing rooms, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the AFM, we shall defend our film scoring industry, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the California beaches, we shall fight on the studio grounds, we shall fight on the sound stages and in the streets, we shall fight in the Hollywood hills; we shall never surrender!

  31. I don't understand this non-chronological trend. Why can't the score just tell the film's story? That's literally its only fuction.

  39. Is the opening of this video the music that Shore wrote for the Chinese phone game???? The description for this video claims it is! Thanks to @KK for finding this. What does everyone think? Is it Shore?

  40. Nah, it's pretty different. Music I listen to over and over and over again, it is a huge part of my life. I listen to music in the car, at work, in the house, running errands, doing everything. And I can listen to the same music over and over again and still love it. Most films I go years and years between viewings of, if I even view them a second time at all.

  41. 99% of the time these days when I have free time to watch a movie, I'd rather watch one I've never seen before, than one I've already seen. I almost don't even know why I even have a blu ray collection. There's just and endless list of films made I want to see but haven't yet that take precedence...
