  3. I got a personal letter in the mail today from Thomas Hooten, written and signed by him. It reads: "Dear John, Thank you so much for your significant help in the John Williams recording project. This would not have been possible without you and I'm incredibly grateful for your generosity. The recording session was truly a once in a lifetime experience; thank you for making it a reality. I can't wait to share it with you. By Monday, Jan. 21, I will have sent the master to get CD's printed. Thank you again for your extremely generous help. Sincerely, Tom Hooten." I cannot wait to get the CD, liner notes and framed copy of the first page of the concerto next month.

  7. No way; I don't have that kind of money! I made a contribution of $500. The letter was a really nice and unexpected gesture.

  8. Wow, the first half of The Hidden World (track 13) is unlike anything I've heard lately! I think the first track starts off a little slow - certainly not the explosive beginning the first two scores had. But that ending....

  9. I was listening to this interview last night actually. The anecdote (starting at around 41-minute mark) about Powell presenting his L3 material/sketches to Williams was hilarious. πŸ˜‚ Karol

  15. Ah, discmans... The highlight of long car journeys for me would be when the car shook a little and the CD skipped a bit...

  16. I'm sure it would be only one Williams, tops...and the only one still controlled by Varese at this point is Presumed Innocent. Does anyone know how much missing music there is for that score? On the other hand there are a gazillion "remaining" unexpanded Goldsmith scores they control in perpetuity. So I really really hope one of them is in this batch. Yavar

  17. The very first CD I ever bought was Schindler's List. I used to listen to it on my Discman over and over again... That was a pretty well-made little player! I think it lasted me well over a decade before it finally broke and stopped moving... I might have dropped it once too often. Oh well.

  19. I still remember at the very beginning, in the mid 90's, I used to listen to Jurassic Park on one of these bad boys! πŸ˜‚ Ah, those were the days! And then the CD took off, and I got my very first Discman! I used to love Mega Bass...

  20. Just about to go to the pub, so don't have time to write a full review. I didn't notice too many new themes besides the ones in the Suite, but I think this is at least as good as Solo, and I loved Solo. Most of tracks 11-16 contain glorious choral parts, quite reminiscent of Hubris. Love it

  25. I'm just curious to hear these thousands of composers, or at least a decent number by the sounds of things, that are superior to Beethoven in your opinion.

  26. I dont understand the comparison between film music and classical music. I have only had the smallest interst in classical music. I am much more interested in John Williams than in classical or even films scores as a whole.

  30. I was wondering why Michael Feinstein sounded so familiar and then I remembered that in 2008 he recorded his own version of Williams' song The Same Hello, the Same Goodbye, which was originally written for Frank Sinatra but who never sung it himself and which hadn't been recorded before. It can be found on Michael Feinstein's album The Sinatra Project (2008).

  33. Wow that does work very well! Almost makes me wonder if John ever recorded an alternate ending which was indeed Rey's Theme. I'll be very disappointed if IX again ends with Binary Sunset (TFA was the real missed opportunity, and it was unnecessary in TLJ considering its use ten minutes prior for Luke's death!) but I think we all know it's inevitable. Rey's Theme is just wonderful, it works beautifully in that slower, more sombre tone.

  35. Can’t believe a Kickstarter project can lead us to a new recording by an amazing trumpeter and the Maestro himself. I will buy the CD! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ» Maybe there will be a time for more kickstarter projects like this... it seems like Maestro Williams has been pretty enthusiastic about the whole project from the get-go.πŸ˜† πŸ‘»

  36. Congratulations to Thomas Hooten, orchestra members, recording engineers, and especially Maestro John Williams for the successful funding of this project. I look forward to hearing the CD in February. What is cool is my name will be included in the liner notes of the CD, I'll receive a copy of the CD (signed by Mr. Hooten), a framed copy of the front page of the score of the concerto (signed by Mr. Hooten), and a personalized thank you note from Mr. Hooten. I am very glad to have contributed to this worthwhile project.

  37. Hi all! This is Tom Hooten. Thanks for sharing on the project! For those upset that the $50 is a lot for a CD, the premise is more as a tax deductible donation to help fund the project, and the signed CD is more of a free "thank you," along with the digital download and thank you note (the previous level rewards). I hope that makes sense. About timing, I actually have 2 large donors that are funding enough of the project to hire the musicians and book the studio. The whole project costs about $100k! This money being raised here is mostly for the post-production costs (editing it all together, printing CD's, making it digital, among other fees that add up). So we are set for the recording session with the previous donors, but this helps to finish the project! Just to answer some questions. I hope that makes sense. Thanks again for all of your support! Best, Tom Hooten

  38. Hi all! I wanted to share a project that I"m doing very soon. You can read more about it on the kickstarter page, but I'm recording John's Trumpet Concerto with a full orchestra, with John himself conducting! I've raised a majority of the funding for the full orchestra and recording fees, but am doing this campaign to raise the remaining gap. If any are interested in contributing or sharing, there are rewards on the page and I'd appreciate you all for helping to make this a reality!! Thanks for reading! Best, Tom Hooten, Principal Trumpet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/williamshootencd/john-williams-and-thomas-hooten-recording-project?ref=user_menu

  39. The fact that Maestro John Williams generously agreed to conduct his Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra and his Theme from Born On the Fourth of July and record both (the former of which has never been recorded with him conducting it) for release on CD, that private donors have generously contributed to this project, the fact that this has been a dream of Thomas Hooten to make this recording (and that he wants no financial gain from this), and that people are giving their time to make this project a reality makes this worth while.
