  1. Themes Breakdown Having seen the movie, i try to breakdown which music belongs to Now, Mr. Powell's given us the clue, so it's gonna be easy: First of all, i think this is what made John Powell score a John Powell score; I love how he structurizes the music into Themes, Tunes, Motif and Riff. That way, it enables a lot of new music, but at the same time, still narratively cohesive. Now, here we go: Furies in Love Tune Well, of course: (0:36 onward) Grimmel Tune First heard in this track. 1:09 - 1:33 & 1:56 onwards Hidden World Theme First heard in this track. A nice foreshadowing ( this what makes Powell is the king of narrative in film music). 3:00-3-28 Another major foreshadowing, now with choir ala TSFH: Of course, before it explodes into its main statement Heroes Tune(s) Look how Powell emphasize on the music being more than one: The first tune, First heard in this track, with truly Powellian statement: 3:27-3:47 The second tune, is in this track, at 1:24-1:50 Look how it refers again to the previous tune: Village Hymn I love this rendition, with solo viola. 2:30-2:45 The main statement of course: And lets not forget, the ending ( perfectly suited for the spoiler scene ) Fate Tune I love this, with solo flute ala The Lion King. 00:00-00:58 and this 00:36-1:17 Light Fury Motif Nice foreshadowing. 3:52-3:58 again: and to this regal statement: 0:00-0:23 Fate Riff 1:01-1:28 I love this 3:14-3:37 ( that high note though) Spoiler Riff Indicated by the emoji given on his post, i can assume that this is Mating Riff. 0:40-1-20 March of The Warlords 2:50-3:08

  2. 1m4/2m1 Escape from the Train (Indy's Very First Adventure) https://drive.google.com/open?id=1eLmR09zDToqEpnFaNLsxSTZDflO4A1s0 This the original version of the music for the lion beat. Indy arriving back at home seems to have been messed with: I think originally the warm Indy theme statement covered the Mailbox reveal, In the final film it covers Indy entering the house and the shot of the dog. (The bootleg cues out there don't include the repeated bit of the young Indy motif used in the film, so I don't think it was microedited out of the CD, also when I played it through without editing footage, the grail theme didn't sync up to shot of the illuminated book.) 2m2 The Boat Scene https://drive.google.com/open?id=15TcYpGE8oxJYYSAG8za-S92MomlQKrfF In the final film you can actually spot a continuity error: right after Indy gets the Cross knocked away from him and it almost gets washed overboard, you can see that he still has the cross in his hands while fighting the goons. So it looks like that beat was added after scoring. (The shot of Indy still having the cross after just having it knocked from his hands can be seen at 1:50 of this video: https://youtu.be/3XfWxeszXEI?t=110) 3m2a The Holy Grail https://drive.google.com/open?id=15fGhUUZwcIon5xfA-jq1v8MGQFEjkyBi The opening notes were edited out (you can hear Henry's theme when Donovan mentions him) 3m3 Father's Study https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Oh6bBDA3aOvva067uVoiMK-QjuP_grpp The opening was dialed out in the film, you can also hear Henry's theme in the beginning of the cue as Indy and Marcus arrive at Henry's door. 4m1 The Library (X Marks the Spot) https://drive.google.com/open?id=1cQJ-VYMxeE16hz8bL7AOdozcERpsSl33 The music for the reveal of the Roman Numeral X in the middle of the floor was replaced with a toned down insert. 6m2 Discussing the Book https://drive.google.com/open?id=11S6aZwvbFRwW2K4138Q8wi1sW4fxhQw1 This is the original ending without the Indy theme ending 6m3 Alternate Start / 6m3 Elsa's Betrayal https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gAa170i9_YtRyjneBlZafjkBe08nG9AT The unused ending for the reveal of Donovan is restored. 6m5 The Capture of Marcus (Marcus is Captured) https://drive.google.com/open?id=12_rufb6allIbKHs5dthCXXCjF83wCgwo The opening Nazi theme and spirited rendition of the Henry theme is restored. 7m2 Room in Flames (Alarm!) https://drive.google.com/open?id=15emniE8-GzXYPYk4gjGyfkTZZ9jabg03 The original order of scenes has been restored as best I could figure. 7m4/8m1 To Berlin https://drive.google.com/open?id=19QVLNG1Xpl0vTzKFd8U5gMNobYlPyKRd The original ending is restored. 8m3 Meeting Hitler (To the Blimp) Take 1: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1cgVGkqZ1afIl6Vh_mztgMqcGp8vxhKS3 Take 2: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1op9GbscDGaS1dYdpeEFCW0YB9wNa4sOM Take 3: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1v2lmuAW0msaEFBi9lG6d0BO5N4uZfoNw The music for Indy meeting Hitler has been restored, there were several sync options so I present three of the most likely. 8m7/9m1 Turning Around (The Blimp Turns Around) https://drive.google.com/open?id=1E4SPUI1w_DS6kjRcHYv0zZ35qXaGacaH The unused Grail theme statement in the opening of the cue has been restored. 6. Krull is a fantastic adventure/sci-fi/fantasy epic score. Give it another go. One of Horner's best. Not as well recorded or performed as Willow with the same forces but similar epic goodness. The blaster beam is not in that score nor do I recall hearing any synths though there is organ. Krull is also one of his notiest scores with lush and dense orchestration and probably one of his most original. In contrast with Battle Beyond the Stars which uses the blaster beam but also rips entire themes from Goldsmith's Star Trek, The Motion Picture. Like the Klingon sequence with blaster beam and theme. It must have pissed Goldsmith off that Horner was the discount Goldsmith who would get Star Trek II and Aliens after both franchises got their start with fantastic Goldsmith scores. Horner's Humanoids from the Deep also uses the blaster beam.

  8. The Orville 2x06 A Happy Refrain Great episode! Funny and touching. It's actually quite nice and refreshing to watch a show with optimism and romance amidst all the usually bleak prestige dramas made these days. The main A story that covered 90% of the episode was really good, and the B story of Bortus's moustache was absolutely hilarious, I wish he had kept it! The funniest moment by far was the Norm MacDonald cameo though, that was brilliant! I think my favorite minor character on this show is Dann, the alien in engineering voiced by Mike Henry (voice of Cleveland Brown from Family Guy) Extremely short score from Andrew Cottee this week, no surprise considering most scenes were unscored and most of the ones that were were scored by source music.

  17. Lost/Found theme in With Love Comes a Great Waterfall. ❤️ It's interesting how grown-up all the themes from previous film are. They are used quite differently in this score. They seem to be less boisterous and more nostalgic. Karol

    American and European Cinema

Prisoners is indeed his finest film. There's a lot to like about BR 2049, but some of the shitty writing turns me off to the whole thing. It sometimes felt like Villeneuve's natural instincts and the screenplay were at odds with each other. I should rewatch it some time to see how it fares.

  28. Nice summary @PrayodiBA! I think you've got them pinned down pretty well. I'm not sure what's missing from the OST, I seem to remember a few small moments here and there. This is one of the best scores I've heard in a while, surely one of my favourite Powell scores! Can't wait to get my hands on the CD, I don't think I've fallen in love with a score like this since TFA.

  30. This! I definitely think he is not a natural composer. His work rarely seems effortless in the way Williams' does (save for maybe Ratatouille.) I also have yet to seem him score a drama in any meaningful way, so that shows he's kinda limited. I think his themes are often too short and do not have secondary sections or phrases. That's why he does not do many concert suites though he does more than many other modern composers. A lot of the time he's trying really hard and you can see that. Trying very hard to be Williams or whatever his conception of an ideal composer is. That said, I do like a lot of his work. He just needs more maturity, more grace, more sophistication in his work.

  32. I hope two of them are in the new batch! I watched the movie a few days ago. Nothing substantial is missing. If that was their priority, I'd be very confused. There should be five new Planet of the Apes releases before anyone should be allowed to dare thinking of the necessity of a Presumed Innocent expansion.

  34. Omen II

    Blaster Beam in film scores

The instrument at the opening of Airport '77 is a Moog synthesiser according to the liner notes. James Horner used a blaster beam in Battle Beyond the Stars, as did Giorgio Moroder in Cat People.

We shall fight on the California beaches, we shall fight on the studio grounds, we shall fight on the sound stages and in the streets, we shall fight in the Hollywood hills; we shall never surrender!
