  8. My Brilliant Friend I think the first thing that strikes you about the show is how extraordinarily unremarkable its ambitions appear to be. With its muted visuals and lack of dramatic or stylized narrative, you wouldn't think it'd fit in with its peers in the "Golden Age of Television". I can imagine most of the Netflix kids giving up halfway through the first episode from boredom. And yet when you see Lenu pass a stone to Lila in a fight with the boys, or she sees the ocean for the first time, there's a remarkable weight to watching those moments unfold. That's exactly how My Brilliant Friend draws you in, in its earnestness. Suddenly what you took for granted, the dusty streets of Italian "suburbia", the neighbourhood family politics and the beautiful language lure you into a sort of trance. One that centers around two girls who cannot help but love and despise each other, constantly facing conflicts, however banal at first, that draw them into complicated emotional territory that feels at once both strange and familiar. You can't turn away. Richter's score does a lot to really sell the emotional beats, as he did with The Leftovers, though here, the music itself is really just variations of La Folia anyway (something he had already explored in his Woolf ballet). It's wonderful stuff. Like TV that belongs to a different time. I look forward to seeing how the second season turns out.

  14. From what I understand about Malick, and hearing about his treatment of Horner's The New World, this set isn't going to be the place to go to hear what was in the film. Luckily I've never seen the film so I wouldn't notice any mixing issues. Whether I buy this depends on whether the actual film score is as interesting as Zimmer's OST. Also, is there anything by Badelt on this release? I have a beautiful track from a promo called 'Music for Films' apparently written for TTRL. I wish they would stop using the phrase 'important score' in descriptions. Zimmer's already the most pretentious composer on the planet without that....

  15. I'd thought of this too, that some of the films had conditioned many fans into expecting that everyone of narrative significance was biologically related somehow, and the "I am your father" twist would be repeated continually.

  17. That's nice. His vocals in the score are luckily not as distracting as his song. Waste of good disc space I say! While I perhaps like the second score still a bit more, the third one is one heck of a send off to the trilogy. As @crocodile said, there is a lovely nostalgic quality to the whole work while still continuing to develop thematically and Powell expertly handles the juggling of his numerous themes, new and old. I am especially fond of the new added vocal dimension of the music and some of the finale choral work is just heart warmingly lovely.

  19. What the hey, I'll do another theme ID, since I'm a rare lad that's actually watched these movies and thus has some idea what theme applies to who/what. This is the theme for the beautiful thief of my heart, Astrid! My otherwise cold dead cat-loving heart ignites whenever it pops up throughout the three scores. 2:59 And of course, Romantic Flight. Also opens the cue "Coming Back Around". In HTTYD2, you'll hear it in "Hiccup the Chief" and the latter half of "Two New Alphas".

  20. In some ways - definitely. Its kind of the opposite of The Last Jedi, which feels directed, to a fault. I do think films like Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens strike a nicer balance, where the camera is doing interesting things, but still your attention is never drawn to it too much. That is all.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

14 months ago, would you have guessed that the fandom would be split in half after TLJ... that SOLO would have lost $200M... and that the Star Wars consumer products division is costing Disney money? Rey is the principal protagonist of the sequel trilogy. For most fans to accept her, she must be someone of significance. Delusion? The irony! As a customer, I am not entitled to anything. Just as Disney/Lucasfilm are not entitled to the fans' business. How were "The Force can be wielded by anybody" and "greatness can come from the humblest of places" significant themes of TLJ? 'Failure can be one's greatest teacher' was a significant theme. Again, what irony. Rey's powers and origin must be explained more completely than 'she is the good to Kylo's bad'. Based on a passage in one of the Aftermath novels, Rey could have come from a Force test-tube... of Palpatine's creation.

So far, Rey's origin has not been explained. But all characters that have met her like her. She acquires skills with no training, succeeds at nearly everything she does, and moving forward, will be inspirational leader. She is not Kathleen Kennedy's metaphorical avatar in the slightest. And if you like Rey more because I do not care for her, you are a sad person.

  40. How To Train a Dragon: The Hidden World by John Powell Magnificent score. The new themes are excellent, and the writing mature and really top notch. Very engaging. Definite influences of Vaughn Williams can be heard. I also hear the mark of John Williams in some of the action passages. What is remarkable is that it does not come off as a derivative score at all. Powell has enriched his own style here, taken it to a new level, and I really like where he's at right now. Legend Has It/ Cliffside Playtime and Once There Were Dragons are the standout cues for me.

  41. And it did achieve that goal. Part of why it was succesful is that JJ Abrams took a formula from the seventies, and managed to repackage it for the audiences of the 2010's quite succesfully. For instance, there's nothing too remarkable about the camerawork in the original Star Wars. The compositions are often striking, but the camera itself is very static, the lighting is predominantly high-key, the close-ups don't pop, there's no use of slow-motion, there are no long takes to speak of. That kind of understated directing will have worked for 70s audiences, but quite simply was not going to fly in 2015. So JJ Abrams took that formula but updated the cinematography - the use of long-takes is particularly noteworthy - without ever drawing the audience's attention too much to how the film was directed. Its a seamless experience in that regard, and that's no small feat.

  44. That wasn't a tweet. During the book tour for Deathly Hallows she was asked by an audience member if Dumbledore found "true love". Her answer was that Dumbledore is gay and was in love with Grindelwald. He was blinded by love and was horribly let down by it. His love Grindelwald was his 'great tragedy'. The audience gasped, then applauded, to which she said something like "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy." Steve Kloves later revealed that he had written a scene for the script of Half-Blood Prince in which Dumbledore reminisce about a girl. Her only note to the scene was 'Dumbledore is gay'. While it may not be explicit in the books, I definitely think it's hinted at in the last book when we learn about Dumbledore's back story.
