  1. When the movie comes out and there isn't even a mention of Palpatine and you hate it, that's gonna be on you. If you set up these kinds of unrealistic expectations (i.e. far-fetched and bizarrely specific theories) then there is no hope in the world that the film will meet those expectations. It will not be Disney's fault, or Kathleen Kennedy's or Rian Johnson's. It will be yours.

  2. Nah I’ll be front and centre for the films, I’m just gonna stand back and watch you implode after the next one comes out and it doesn’t feature Chewbacca’s reunion with Yoda’s Force ghost even though some incel on YouTube found 59 clues pointing to its inevitability

Or, because of the obvious parallel, that's what Rian temped it with?

  5. No, the third note of the Emperor's theme is not lower than the first note. It is the same: They are both G. I don't know where you got the idea that JW would have deliberately put the Emperor's theme in Rey's theme. It's so unlikely, so out of the realm of possibility that I truly think you're either trolling or delusional. Rey has nothing to do with the Emperor. She never has and never will. JJ Abrams did not create a master plan. He opened his box of toys and started playing, then handed the toys over to Rian Johnson. Rian smashed a few bits which upset the onlookers but he handed them back and here we are.

  6. Maz Kanata has Luke's lightsaber. She must have found it on Cloud City. With Lando off rescuing Han, Lobot is in charge of Cloud City. Lobot finds Maz snooping around and confronts her. They get to talking, and one thing leads to another, and then soon little Rey is born. If that's not what happens I'll be very disappointed.

  7. Yoda’s theme is also used when Lando orders evacuation, where it’s narrativelly entirely out of place. It’s just used there because the tune fits dramatically, and you can find stuff like that in other Star Wars scores and other Williams scores.

  8. Does this mean Lando's return in the upcoming film is to reveal that Yoda has been possessing him and guiding his way all these decades? The fact of the matter is, we can play these six-degrees-of-separation games with the themes and their relations/significance to the characters and events on screen, but Williams approaches things from a dramatic viewpoint, moreso than anything else. Hasn't years of listening to "Ben's Death", or being a John Williams fan, taught all of us that? And what's with these heavyweights in the thread acting like they know how to deconstruct music and go toe to toe with people who have proven they know what they're doing? I'll give a lot more credence to someone like Docteur Qui than Mattris here, I'll say that. Do you? I don't know how you reached this. Williams never said anything to lend any remote credence to this interpretation. What I want to know is what exactly this cockamamie theory would do for people who want it to be true. What would it really "fix", what dimension would it add to these movies that you feel is lacking? A sense of connection to the other movies? I really just don't get it.

  11. I think it’s an intentional wink to the audience. I seem to recall that @Falstaft called it the most “intentionally self-referential” of Williams scores. That’s what I wager that moment is. It’s Williams saying: “boy, this sure looks like the Emperor scene, doesn’t it, boys and girls?” just before the scene turns on itself.

  15. Ya just gotta accept that Star Wars is a girly franchise like Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey and Pitch Perfect now. Us dudes, or more specifically us straight white blokes, we're just obsolete now. We're all gonna die soon, as the progrethive Gen-Zs and their automation overlords, Universal Basic Incomes and their Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezes will rise to rule the world. And Star Wars will become a more incluthive and politically correct franchise that women, racial minorities and the disabled will finally be able to call their own.

  16. Okee, I moved all the off-topic posts out of here, and into the Disenchantment thread. People of JWFan, please only discuss Episode 9 related stuff in this thread. @Mattris, you've shown me no reason in your time here on this site that you are not here for the sole purpose of arguing and debating with people about Star Wars, because you don't like the franchise any more. There is nothing wrong with having that viewpoint and there is nothing wrong with debating topics back and forth on a message board, but every other user here balances out negative posts with positive ones, argumentative posts with appreciative posts, informative posts with silly posts, etc. As a result I moved ALL your posts from here into the Disenchantment thread even the ones specifically about Episode 9. If you want to be a contributing member of our forums, you're going to have to act more normally and less trolly and argumentative. If you don't want to do that then I'm afraid I'm going to request that you do 100% of your posting in the disenchantment thread until you can prove that you deserve to be let out of it. Even if you want to reply to this message, do it in that thread. Thank you.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

They are not the only ones with this rather big problem: "I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men, it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless — while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors — like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow — but it would have been just that. Not worth doing." ―from The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter to Colin Bailey It is not impossible to solve, but imho the only real (read: moderately easy) options are: 1. the heroes reunite and defeat a similar evil again, while having new strengths (resources, allies) and weaknesses (old age, less motivation) (these same heroes, with a new generation as a support---so that the story continues smoothly) 2. an external threat outclassing both the previous one and the heroes appears, forcing everyone to unite with their former opponents Passing the torch just doesn't really work in storytelling. People always ask what if Rocky or Captain Picard came back from retirement.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

The biggest mistake this franchise made in the new trilogy was doing nothing new. I don't want a Resistance (Rebellion), a First Order (Empire), a Snoke (Palpatine) or any of it. Give us something new and unique to SW lore. Bring back the 'high fantasy in space' stuff - ASOIAF/Wheel of Time/LotR in space. Give us something evil to fight that isn't the Sith/Dark Side. Make the light & dark side join up to fight some outside force invading the galaxy. Give us full penetration. Just do anything new and exciting.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

It's hardly the first time he's done such a thing in SW. He brought back a passage from ESB's The Duel note-for-note in ROTS for (probably) the same reasons. It was reminiscent of a similar confrontation elsewhere in the saga and fit the narrative to reprise it.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

It seems you made up these 'groupings' just to accommodate your own fantasies, but they have nothing to do with how the themes are actually written from a musical perspective.

    Jaws vs. Alien

My kids watched Jaws for the first time a couple of months ago. They jumped out of their skins throughout the movie, probably around 5-10 times. Jaws has lost none of its power to scare, they were riveted to the TV for the duration. It was a wonderfully satisfying experience to share with them.

  30. Yes, I'm kinda bummed that the rerecording industry is not what it was only some 10-15 years ago. I almost always prefer rerecordings over original recordings when it comes to scores of a certain age. (and of course, the 'renaissance' should start with a rerecording of STORY OF A WOMAN or other unreleased JW scores!)

    The End of Hook

How ironic that the 2012 leak didn't have the famed Cornucopia insert, yet in the previous boot it was the only thing that sounded good (while the rest of the boot sounded awful). IMO it's not a coincidence that the 2012 boot featured crisp, clean versions of the exact cues contained on the missing (probs stolen) session tapes. The question now is whether MM was able to find alternative legitimate sources that weren't found in 2012, and whether such a search was far enough down the pipeline to avoid Sony's third party licensing ban.

  36. A sweetener is a piece of music recorded later intended to mix over an already-recorded cue, to, well, sweeten it up! The examples posted above are, well, perfect examples! And yes I know I have more scores to add to the main post and more edits to make to some existing ones posted. I'll get to it soon.

  39. Acoording to comments on the FSM board, the Wondercon panel revealed we're getting the expanded Elfman's this year (Darkman, Mission: Impossible) as well as the 25th anniversary edition of Stargate. They don't seem to know whether there will be more Bond ("it's pretty sporadic with EON"). Anything else, I wonder? Karol

  40. After hearing the many interviews for the different Superman The Movie CD Releases from Rhino , Film Score Monthly and La Land Records that Mike Matessino has done over the years it is quite remarkable how each of the releases was done and some of the legal issues etc. each had to get through. 1. You had the Salkind's owning everything up through 2001-2006 owning all materials related to the Superman films from 1978-1987 , 2. Warner Bros Music Group (now Water Tower Music and different from Warner Bros Records) splitting up the music division in 2004 and all the labels from one label plus the AOL Time Warner Sale in 2001 , 3. The Siegel and Shuster lawsuit regarding the Superman character which did get settled in 2013 prior to the release of Man of Steel and 4. Getting John Williams and his representatives to approve this new release of Superman The Movie on CD for the 40th Anniversary. A lot of hurdles and legal issues each release had to go through for each of the CD release but I'm glad we have these all out and in our CD Collections and special thanks again to Mike Matessino and the teams who worked on these CD release for Superman The Movie.

    The End of Hook

Alas no matter how awesome the actual full version of the End of Hook is (IT IS!), you can't post download link here to copyrighted material. I really wish that some day Mike Matessino can hunt down all the tapes for Hook for the definitive presentation of the score and release it in its full glory. Neverfeast, Ultimate War etc. in full form and inserts added and the complete 15 minute Remembering Childhood presented full and in sequence.
