  1. The only dumpster fire on JWFan is the hostile negativity pervading these threads, where enjoying or being positive about something is drowned out by antagonistic cynicism. People can actually separate the fact that movies are made (first and foremost) to be profitable. Likewise, that filmmakers also strive to make them entertaining for fans who enjoy the escapism the series provides. It never ceases to amaze me how posters, who proclaim their disdain for these new films ad nauseam, feel so compelled to relentlessly promote their opinions and ruin discussion by those who actually enjoy them. It's no wonder so many good posters have migrated to the Discord where you can actually have civil discussions on topics without the onslaught of vacuous negativity.

  7. You know, all those movies you love from the 80s and 90s were decried as cynical creatively bankrupt cash grabs by people of the age you are now.

  8. "I'm going to a write a very cool, unique and heroic version of Rey's theme when she leaps over the TIE fighter. There is no point in including that in the soundtrack album so I'll micro-edit that cue to remove it" - John Williams, 2019

  9. Pretty sure Ian McDiamond (I know that's not how you spell it but whatevs) showed up on stage right after the trailer premiered. Will he be a force ghost? Can baddies even be force ghosts? Maybe as he was falling to his doom in ROTJ, he repented all his crimes very, very quickly and became a good guy again. And his laughter at the end of the trailer is genuine happiness that the whole gang is together having a fun adventure.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

I recently rewatched TLJ on Netflix. It is better than I remember it being in theaters and a better film than many people here are willing to give it credit for. As as a movie-going/seeing experience, it’s top-notch. Beautifully shot and lit, tons of visually fun treats (Luke vaulting over to his fishing spot, the millennium falcon bursting out of the cave on crait...), the most realistic looking explosions and explosion aftermath I’ve seen in maybe any movie (you actually see, like, debris and not just orange fireballs that instantly seem to disappear everything)... The story is also good. Really good. Some people seem to think, or want to believe, that JJ will retcon everything that RJ did, and there’s no reason to think he has to. Rey’s parents, for instance, may turn out to be non-nobodies, but that wouldn’t take away from the impact of Kylo saying the opposite to Rey (and preying on her insecurities) to tip her over to his side). I loved TFA, and now I think TLJ is at par with it. Which makes me all the more excited for TRS.

  12. I hope Luke is talking to Kylo when he says he's passed on all he knows, because he aint passed on shit to Rey. Well I guess he did tickle her hand with a leaf, which is pretty much equal to what Yoda taught Luke.

  18. The brief Coke ad featured a new version of the main theme, and the sizzle reel of new shots from the park seemed, if I heard correctly, to feature a couple of other sections of what was still pretty clearly the original concert suite we heard in November. This seems to corroborate the theory that we still haven’t heard that whole suite as written. This has to be the strangest debut of a concert piece ever...

  19. I love how hip TLJ is. It's like, so self-aware, so ironic and like, so meta. It's like, totes the cleverest and wokest SW film.

  21. No, ROTJ really isn't a very good film.

  22. How sad it is to see the new trilogy pan out this way. TFA actually did a good job, introducing new characters, new villains, saying goodbye to some old ones and still keeping enough of them around to still feel like Star Wars in a familiar setting. Then TLJ came and f-ed it all up with “subverting expectations.” Making a big deal of Rey’s parents being nobody. Killing off Snoke. And now Disney and JJ are trying to save it by bringing back that “Star Wars-feeling” - which means introducing old characters. The Emperor! Lando! Didn’t we move on from these guys already? Isn’t the movie set in a huge galaxy that should contain unlimited adventures for unlimited characters (or at least the ones from TFA)? Can we just have a movie that feels like Star Wars and is set in the same universe without them bringing back every damn character from the OT?

  23. And so the JWFan Rites have begun. In the months leading to a new Star Wars, every one of us shall face trials, trials that challenge us to the core. Our sanity lies in the balance. Borodin is but only the beginning of the culled. Who's next?

  27. The reason why everyone thought your Palpatine theory was wrong is because it's a terrible idea. But Disney are good at those so it turned out to be true.

  28. It smacks of the same self-referential stuff that the old EU did - overreliance on stuff from the old movies. I also liked the idea of there being no more “big bad boss level villain” after Snoke died, and it was the heroes and their army versus Kylo and his army. But if executed well, it’ll be fine. I like the narration, the standoff between Rey and Kylo on the desert. The look. I think the weird skiff chase with threepio looks cool. I love that Lando and Chewie get action in the Falcon - I had assumed Lando would only be a glorified cameo, little more than a Fallen Kingdom Goldblum type of deal. Knowing that it’s just a taste - the first, limited taste! - I’m excited. i wish we would have seen Ackie or Keri’s Russell in action, but I’m sure that’ll be in the full trailer in a few months. I think they may have stayed on the Discord where the vibe was good!

    Star Wars Disenchantment

The musical stuff is wrong and stays wrong, it was already explained to you. You drew conclusions based on wrong notes (the Scavenger fragment), not distinguishing between a major third and a minor third, seeing similarities based on fragments of just two notes, etcetera. Personally, the musical part of your analysis is the only thing I had objected to (except when you said that Anakin's theme quotes Vader's theme, which is true but also well known since 1999). On the other hand, you were right in predicting the return of the Emperor, which I also feel was a necessity because of the Darth Plagueis dialogue in the prequels.

  35. This is the best shot in the trailer because our main characters are actually all together, and on a real location together, not some lame indoor green screen set This is the worst shot in the trailer because who gives a frack about his stupid helmet

  37. Disagree. That stuff gets boring because they're too evenly matched. Like 40 minutes of Anakin/Obi-wan in ROTS was just boring after a while. ESB judged the confrontation perfectly in terms of interspersing story with action. More of that. Another thing that was great about ESB is Luke wasn't a jedi, he was a just a student facing off against Vader, a sith lord. All stakes were on Luke and that made for excellent drama. Aren't both Kylo and Rey still students though both powerful in the force?
