  1. That was me, yeah a long time ago and on the shrine. And thanks for the kind words Since I posted them a long time ago, it was a good time to do a quick revisit. So here are the updated ones, with a few changes added: EDIT: Since the assembly line style isn't my cup of tea, they all have their original poster logos now. Except for The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, those I made from scratch inspired by Jim Titus' ideas and my own personal taste. Feel free to use them if you want

  2. BBC News - Star Wars: Mark Hamill supports super fan's emotional video https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-47961354 Return of the Jedi is a perfectly decent final part of the original trilogy btw. Yes it has the silly plastic-eyed teddy bears bringing down the technologically advanced armoured infantry units in battle, but so what? Everything on screen is practically mounted, the [admittedly tame] stunts are shot on location, the pyrotechnics are staged for real; there's no need to suffer eyebleed at the sterile sight of green screen work and weird uncanny valley CG creatures polluting the frame just because they can. And in amongst all that, intercut with well-paced precision (not a given with Star Wars flicks *cough* TLJ *cough*) we have the Emperor+Vader Vs Luke scenes anyway, which in their own right are arguably top tier Star Wars sequences and actually some of most memorable and beloved moments in the entire saga. It ain't perfect and it's certainly the weakest aspect of the OT, yet RotJ still has plenty of charm, music that laughs in the face of anything in the new trilogy, and a ton of the really, really good stuff that makes Sight and Sound magazine fanciers wince: heart. If you're not grinning and singin' stupid ewok songs by the end of it, you'd be better off sticking to your disjointed and resoundingly meh later movies in the series and then still moaning about their imperfections online for the foreseeable future and beyond.

  3. It's the kind of writing 'General Hospital' or 'Knots Landing' writers earn their shekels with. And it's a befitting nod to the past that they do kinda the same stunt for the last movie (bringing the emperor back, yeah folks!) - it's a *galaxy* the size of Liechtenstein, obviously.

  4. This is phenomenal. I am so excited! Not to mention Theme from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, as well as expanded releases to come. Nothing less from the greatest composer and conductor of our time. I can’t wait!

  5. I would be fine having the sequels with the logo in between 'star wars', the prequels with the big 'episode' logo and the OT with their individual logos

  7. She is genuinely grateful is all. Williams has written 1 to 2 hours of music specifically for her (including Markings). What artist would not be thrilled with such an honor? It is a momentous moment for her--whether it is the greatest or not does not matter.

  9. The Superman theme in Justice League was not hidden... Didn’t you see the movie? It’s right there! It’s just not as blatantly used as it is in the Reeve movies. Harder then to pick up Batman ‘89. Overall, I thought they were small, but noticeable, references and well managed. (Although, I personally wouldn’t have minded if Elfman had leaned harder into both classic themes.) I don’t at all agree that the statement that the “Justice League score was atrocious and the fucked up rendition of the JW theme was just a completely out of place easter egg.” The JW reference in Shazam is, if anything, obvious. Superman walks on screen. The fanfare plays. The scene brought the JW theme back in a way that told the audience it was not ashamed of using it. Nothing “warped” about it, as perhaps it was in JL. It put a big smile on my face!

  10. Its rubbish writing really, doesn't make any sense and tethers the character forever to her "family" and the Force.

  11. It's not that strange in a movie about space wizards. It doesn't take away from the story, it adds another strength to it. To me, Leia is a strong woman who could hold her own against the Empire without Force powers, and having a connection to Luke gives another way for Vader to exploit this fact by discovering her heritage and spurring Luke to unleash his anger.

  12. With the way ASM has been giddily beaming about her time & work with JW over the past few weeks/months, one is tempted to wonder if this was her most enjoyed or privileged professional collaboration ever. In a career as long and successful as hers, that’d be saying a lot.

  13. Hey, Manakin, do you think you could maybe avoid using the phrase "fucking retarded?" This is the second time in two days that I've seen someone here on JWFan use the term "retard" in a derogatory way, and I find it sort of offensive. I'm sure others must, too. @Jay, surely there is a rule against this sort of thing here as there is on so many of the other forums in which I participate? I love John Williams music, and I love Star Wars. I come here to share in those passions with fellow fans, not to hear slurs and hurtful epithets. No matter race, sex, gender identity, religion, political affiliation, or even disability, I think everyone should be made to feel welcome here. Just my two cents. .

It's a FANTASY! In a universe populated with magical space wizards and giant slugs that live in asteroids, fantastical plot points and scenarios are to be expected. And I've never minded that particular twist in ROTJ.

  18. Befitting the season, Alfred Newman's reverential Barber-cum-Handel variation of the 'Greatest Story Ever Told' (you wouldn't guess it from the music). Apart from the adagio dirge that is the famous main theme, there are many sparse solistic moments for woodwinds that are very un-Golden-Age-like, in case you feared. It is probably the most introspective, 'minimalist' score for that genre and era - Newman often was a surprisingly transparent composer, compared to the heavy breathing of Steiner or Tiomkin. Fun fact: a 9-note-phrase of the big journey theme from this score recalls the adventure theme from the LOTR films (listen at the 9 minute mark). I hear a lot of Shostakovitch but no Tchaikovski.

  19. The Death of Stalin by Christopher Willis An unexpected pleasure. A Tchaikosvky/Shostakovich-esque string serenade of sorts, fairly-well rooted in the Russian symphonic style of the early 20th century. While being a short album (it's a 30 minute listen, rather brief and lovely) the quality of the score almost makes me want to see some sort of concert symphony come from Willis in a similar key. Best sampler track: A Comedy of Terrors (End Titles). The Old Man and the Gun by Daniel Hart Easy-going slow swing/jazzy album. Really nice, one of the best listens of 2018 really. Great little tunes. Reminiscent of those classic Guaraldi Trio Charlie Brown scores at times, if you get my meaning. Best sampler track: The Over the Hill Gang. Mary Poppins Returns by Marc Shaiman Just a run-through of Shaiman's score. It's charming, but it can feel a little too charming at times. I wouldn't say forced, but I get that impression in a sense. Best sampler track: Overture. A is for... Avengers: Infinity War by Alan Silvestri Some top-notch action material, good thematic reprises, and new music for Thanos. Best sampler track: Infinity War. Ant-Man by Christophe Beck A decent theme as far as superheros go, but there's not much more to it than that. Still okay IMO. Best sampler track: Theme from Ant-Man. Attack of the Clones by John Williams A complete edit of the score arranged in the style of the '97 RCA Victor OT sets. I don't give enough credit to this score, because whenever I pick favourites out of Star Wars this one always ends up on the bottom, which isn't fair because it's still very, very good. I do prefer the other Prequel scores, but Attack of the Clones is a very curious addition, from the whimsical Chase Through Coruscant, to the sweeping love theme and the dark Separatist motif. It's aces, and it's a pity that it sits on a low throne.

  26. Lately i really get my kicks from this Chailly recording of Bartok. 'Miraculous Mandarin' is the more famous work (Goldsmith drew from it rather obviously in 'Total Recall'), but it's 'Concerto for Orchestra', with its many spooky, mysterious passages that i return to (the first minutes of Elegia must have been the inspiration for the 'misterioso' writing in the Hoth parts of 'ESB' and numerous Goldsmith's from the late 70's). The Presto finale in which a whirling perpetual-motion-main theme competes with fugal fireworks based on folk melodies also must have been studied extensively by silver age composers.

  27. I rarely watch the movies to give a good score context. Never ends well. I learned that lesson with Goldsmith’s LEVIATHAN. For example, I listen to Christopher Young’s PRIEST imagining it’s a Raven movie.

  28. That'd be an instant purchase. (I finally just listened to the SW Celebration video with the full suite, and I'm so in love!) I'm really hoping that somehow we get a "Music of Galaxy's Edge" album like we did with Cars Land when that opened. In the meantime, pardon me while I go edit together the different bits that have been released... EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like we have the following: 1. The full concert suite ("Galaxy's Edge") as heard at SW Celebration, including the absolutely incredible "Galaxy's Edge Alt. Beginning" 2. A clean abridged version of the same suite, omitting the alternate beginning and editing out most of the middle 3. A clean bit at the start of the middle section that was edited out of #2, heard in this video 4. In that same video, what seems to be a similar alternate ending to the concert suite 5. The Coke ad

  29. Because it very obviously wasn't the plan all along and it just served as a cop out ending to the Luke-Leia romance that never quite happened. Lucas apparently didn't have the balls to just have the hero not get the girl, he had to make up some weird family connection as an excuse to keep them apart.
    1 point
  30. I'm not sure how that's possible though also I think the suite might be an edit of smaller section recorded seperately. In the original video the opening starts clean without the fanfare

  31. that minute between 9.15 and 10.15 is mind blowing the first few seconds is also one of the best opening of a concert version he ever did (we can hear that properly in the official live feed)

  37. I have been a fan of Star Wars since I saw Episode IV: A New Hope on VHS when I was six or seven years old. Star Wars is my favorite franchise. The story, the characters, the Maestro’s music. I own the first eight chapters of the Skywalker Saga, the entire set of The Clone Wars (until season 7 premieres with the launch of Disney+, in which I will subscribe to catch that), Solo, Rebels and Rogue One. I also own many of the novels, including Queen's Shadow, Dark Disciple, Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel, the novelization of Solo, The Rise of the Empire, Thrawn, Thrawn: Alliances, Ahsoka, Leia: Princess of Alderaan, Lost Stars, Heir to the Jedi, The Aftermath trilogy, Last Shot, Bloodline, Phasma, The Legends of Luke Skywalker, the novelizations of Episode VII and VIII, and I look forward to the novels coming out. I am really looking forward to catching The Mandalorian on Disney+. Seeing the entire saga thus far, it will be really exciting to see the final chapter play out in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. I am really looking forward to experiencing everything that Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge has to offer. From the small glimpses seen and the details I've read, Batuu and Black Spire Outpost sound like a very interesting place to visit. I am really excited!

  40. Not odd when you consider for the past few years the FSM Knight Rider disc, when it's been even available (no copies at Amazon or Discogs right now, at all) has gone for $200 or more! Very smart of Varese to reissue that disc, and including a full extra disc of new Phillips music will probably even lure owners of the FSM version back to the well, if they liked it. Yavar

  42. The score is relentlessly dark and tense from Rey's Journey right until the end of the credits -- a near-continuous musical stretch lasting over an hour, with nary a dull moment throughout. Vastly superior to his third act of TFA in my opinion (which constitutes The Bombing Run until the end of the credits I guess? Not much unreleased music I'm losing sleep over).
