  1. This will be more of an ode to JWFan - It's difficult to choose five members because ever since I was a lurker a few years ago the knowledge, insightful commentary, witty banter (that is trademarked JWFan behavior) heated debates, the raving rantings of lunatics and fanatics and the sense of community has really made this place one that is grounded and essential for those who follow John Williams' work. When I feel like shit I log on and find in some corner of the forum some little nuggets of comedy gold, or information that if I hadn't found this place, I'd still be living in the dark ages of the film score world. If I get bored I wander over to the Other Topics, find strange commentaries on all sorts of issues and topics, the occasional trip to 'Sexiest Young Celebrities' thread and if I'm really, really, really bored, I'll pop down to the Tolkien Thread (jks) Whilst I don't have favourite members in particular I'll mention those who I think are irreplaceable and have made my experience here worthwhile: @BloodBoal was perhaps the most prolific jester, he had a certain way to inject humor into almost every thread he was in and, in an instant, like some bipolar, split personality, could be very prescient on topics and discussion of film music. @Jay A friendly authoritative source here on this forum of whose content and contributions to the film music world can't be ignored. If I, or anyone else slips up, Jay is the first to point out the mistakes. @Chen G. When Chen joined the forum it certainly rocked the boat, and for some time I despised his persistence and perseverance to be a royal pain, but in the time since has demonstrated a passion for storytelling and filmmaking and is often fun to but heads with on occasion. @Kasey Kockroach For a moment I believed this was a sock account for BB, but his genuine positivity and banality has made reading threads fun, sometimes unbearable, sometimes boring, but is never dour or deadly serious which I admire. Plus, as incessant as his posting of pictures of Bryce Dallas Howard is, I think I'm starting to like her For the rest of you, thankyou for your contributions!

  10. ok I got this video to start at the opeining fanfare .it was kind of a pain in the ass to find what do you mean by alt beginning? the fanfare at the beginning? As for the "B" section of the theme, the original video on page 1 of this thread was the ending of the piece, while the more recent video that sounds more militaristic was the opening

  11. I'm currently sat at a Pixar concert in Birmingham and am absolutely shocked and quite frankly pissed off. It began with 3 blaringly loud trailers on a big screen, yes TRAILERS of 3 disney movies. Aladin, lion king and toy story 4. Am I at the cinema or a damn concert! 3 horribly loud trailers for 10 minutes before the concert even started. And if that wasn't bad. The concert itself has confused me to no end. The whole sound is coming from just the left side of the stage. And each instrument is so loud and clear, it's like listening through a stereo speaker. I may as well just be sat at home listening to it on CD with one speaker turned off. It sounds like they are miming their instruments... I can't explain it. It's just weird. Nothing sounds right at all. The audio and stage mixing is utterly dreadful. I have a massive headache right now from the blindingly earpiercing brass. It feels like there is a 20ft speaker against my ear. I go to about 10 concerts a year and have been to about a hundred and concerts seem to be getting worse in all manner of ways.

  13. Another one was at a Casino Royale Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, where a middle-aged couple were sat to my left, and the man just loved telling his wife everything that was happening in the film along with it, to show her how much he knew, and as if she wasn't watching the bloody film with him. She looked suicidal as he would tell her "that's the old original model of the Aston." or "oooo Bond has his gun ready look." I expected his wife to be a blind and deaf mute with the way he was describing everything he saw to her, but at the end she just walked out fine speaking to him about it. Yet again I was baffled.

  19. And like the film, much of Herrmann's original score was cut to pieces and replaced. But it's one of his very best from the early part of his film career. This reconstructed and re-recorded score is great.

  20. I went to a JW concert a few weeks ago and everyone was very respectful. Sure, everyone sang along with the five note theme of CE3K, but that was only because that's what the conductor instructed.

  24. When I saw Fellowship of the Ring, I was pleased to see the audience was enthusiastic for the 'meme lines', but the chatter and laughter surrounding those moments was a little too distracting - but they're the people who fill the seats and get the concerts circulating so I can't complain too much. I think in my mind I wanted the concerts to have the more formal etiquette of a classical concert audience, where we can hear the players and the music and we just listen and take it in damn it!

  25. Oh yes, the score is fine, much better than what the film deserved. The reverse situation as POSEIDON, which was an excellent film with a lacklustre score.

  31. Really I blame reality shows. They make people feel entitled to be loud and obnoxious thus validating themselves. Part of having a good time to me is allowing others to do so as well.

It's a FANTASY! In a universe populated with magical space wizards and giant slugs that live in asteroids, fantastical plot points and scenarios are to be expected. And I've never minded that particular twist in ROTJ.

  36. AT ETERNITY's GATE Julian Schnabel's At Eternity's Gate is an in-depth impressionistic look at the final months of the troubled life of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe). With a stellar supporting cast of Rupert Friend, Mads Mikklesen, Oscar Isaac and Mathieu Amalric, this film is at it's best in it's performances and over-arching style. Schnabel, being himself a painter, offers tremendously unique visual parameters. From bifocal lenses, to amazing emphasis on colour, Schnabel forms a movie that speaks directly to artists of all kinds. I felt like much appreciation is felt in one's own personal relation to the film rather than just the film itself. Dafoe plays the troubled van Gogh tremendously. In a role that landed him an Oscar nomination, he immerses himself into the artist's character with great results. It's no question that Dafoe is quite good at portraying these types of characters (The English Patient anyone?), and he really pushes his surroundings forward. Without a convincing performance from him, which I think was surpassed, this movie would simply not work as well. Mikklesen, Isaac and Friend all have small supporting roles, of which Mikklesen's is easily my favourite. He plays a great priest, and while his scene is short, it's very, very good. The story follows van Gogh through the French countryside, painting, receiving harsh criticism, being a victim of public violence, partnering with fellow artists, cutting off his ear (nothing graphic, no), and being placed in a mental asylum. It's a very grim and dark story, but van Gogh's pure love of art provides such strong emotional resonance that the pathos is merely a stage in the story arch, even if it occupies most of the film. An important note is that it helps to be an artist of some kind to appreciate this film. No matter the form or the scale, I feel that artists will be able to embrace the impressionism of Schnabel's cinematography, the curiosity of Dafoe's performance, and the architecture of the entire feature on a grand scale. On a closing note, Tatiana Lisovskaya hits the nail on the head with this score. The beauty of yet another art form is exemplified on a secondary level, truly pinning At Eternity's Gate as an artistically inspired picture. A great sampler of this solo piano-violin oriented underscore is Van Gogh Theme II (With Violin). RATING: ***** out of ***** CONSENSUAL STATEMENT: "An impressionist masterpiece- a work of art. Dafoe's performance is completely immersive." -Jerry

  38. As long as I have access to the Disney live action films of the 50s and 60s. I wanna watch 20,000 Leagues, Treasure Island, Johnny Tremain, The Three Lives of Thomasina, or The Parent Trap whenever I want. I have a weird affection for that era. We should probably have a new thread for Disney+

  39. I mean, it’s gonna host the entire catalogue of Star Wars movies, all of the MCU movies, all of Pixar’s stuff, a selection of their classic films, a ton of original content, etc. All for $7 a month! Seems like a great deal to me.

  40. I agree. Things like Columbo and Marcus Welby should be covered. But it's also a major publication's podcast, not a fan podcast. So it makes sense. I'm guessing they'll have the usual mattress and food delivery sponsors. Night Gallery won't bring in the listeners.
