  1. I hope it will be as amazing as those 2 previous have been.

  2. Today is history. Batman, the beloved movie, the franchise more or less as we know it to this day was unleashed like a batarang on the world. Blockbusters had been around for at least a decade prior, but it became the prototype for a newer modern blockbuster with its controversial casting, massive salary for a big name star, darker tone, an edgy new-age director, tie-in pop soundtrack and overall merchandising blitz. I think even Disney is a little jealous of all that Batman paraphernalia. About the only thing that's changed since that time is the introduction of cinematic universes, a way to simply expand the blockbuster movie to a blockbuster series. They're basically still making them in the mold of Batman because it simply is the best of its kind. I'm drinking a Diet Coke as I type this and thinking of how Batman is also such a charming product of its time. It really appeals to a male fantasy of the 80s. Batman blows guys away with guns and missiles (Remember, this was acceptable and cool back then--our heroes were Indiana Jones, Rambo etc.), drives a cool hotrod and saves ludicrously attractive screaming blonde women. So no, they don't exactly make them like this anymore unfortunately. They definitely don't score them like this anymore. Elfman's more recent Justice League score and, hell, everything I've seen from Tim Burton in the last 20 years show how the mighty have fallen. But Jack Nicholson as the Joker, the absolutely iconic moments, Anton Furst's stunning Academy Award winning production design and the Elf Man's best score are all preserved in this beautiful 30 year-old time capsule of cinematic greatness.

  5. Here’s a really awful mock-up I just made: https://www.dropbox.com/s/c17ivqdrlo0uwix/Star Wars.m4a?dl=0 Just guessing on the tempo, but I can’t recall any where in episodes 7 or 8 where this theme has this syncopated bass part, or is played by muted trumpets (and possibly muted horns?). Curious what @Falstaft thinks…

  6. I think we can now safely assume that the TROS recording sessions have started - because that is very clearly the March of the Resistance theme! 😁 I’m so happy that this is really happening, 9 John Williams Star Wars scores.

  9. Still one of the best in recent memory. And reminds you that film music written as *Music* has not to reek of derivative Hollywood formulas.

  12. By popular demand, here's probably my favourite JW scores. The order is a bit arbitrary, except for the first spot: 1. Jurassic Park 2. The Empire Strikes Back 3. Star Wars 4. E.T. and Jaws 5. The Last Crusade and Schindler's List ...and here's possibly my favourite non-JW scores, in arbitrary order: Oliver: Lady Jane Herrmann: North by Northwest Barry: Out of Africa Goodwin: Where Eagles Dare Walton: Henry V Morricone: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Jarre: Lawrence of Arabia Korngold: Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk, Robin Hood That one almost made my list!

  13. The original album is obviously the best version for listening purposes.

  14. MOTR and a bass part. From top to bottom, most likely: bassoon, horns (3 staves), trumpets, trombones.

  19. All John Williams releases should be enhanced CDs with a link to Jay's spreadsheet for each score! I gave the new release a listen last night, and enjoyed it a lot. It leans heavily on the main theme, but I liked the theme enough that I didn't mind. The piano rendition in "At the Forum" was one of the biggest highlights.

  20. Fuck no. Literally all the OST edits do is interrupt the actual flow of the actual score.

  22. The sheet music shows the choir. The choir was recorded. It was included in the album. Then the director of the film decided to not include it in the film.

  25. A Man For All Seasons I started watching The Taming of the Shrew and couldn't stand it after only ten minutes so I watched this instead. I'm glad I did, this was really good. The lead guy in the movie is outstanding.

  26. Btw Goldsmith is one of John Williams few equals. His music is greater than any other composer of this age save for John & Horner. Everyone else is a least a step down. Jerry is that great. To be blunt. Jerry is better than any living film composer except one, and better than just about all the dead ones too.

  30. @JoeinAR fine, let me try this again, and I'll only pick five this time. But darn it, every time I do this I choose differently! This is my final answer. Williams: 1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. E.T. the Extra Terrestrial 3. Raiders of the Lost Ark 4. Star Wars ('77) 5. Empire of the Sun Honorable mentions: Seven Years in Tibet Jaws Schindler's List Jurassic Park Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom The Phantom Menace Close Encounters of the Third Kind Non-Williams: 1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by Howard Shore 2. Batman by Danny Elfman 3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by Howard Shore 4. Out of Africa by John Barry 5. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly by Ennio Morricone

  31. I love this beautiful, mysterious, and dark long cue from EOTS. Reminds me of the grim stillness of Rued Langgaard's Misterio "Dodssejleren". Excuse poor recording, this was the only performance I could find.

  32. I didnt. You misunderstand. You can put up to 5 on the list. You are not limited to one from any saga. You are just limited to 5 so if you want you can put sw, esd, rotj, tfa, and TLJ..

  34. I never made this thread though, I wrote the post in another thread and suddenly it became it’s own! My thoughts are that the version in the sheet music is unlike anything in Ep 7 and 8 and since it has been stated that TROS will start recording in june, I thought it was safe to assume they did in fact start recording. If not, they’re very very close to it.

  35. I usually prefer listening to complete scores than to OSTs because with an OST you don't get the full picture and you might not get the best version of a cue. Many times the film version of a cue is much better than what we get on the OST. Thematic development is often ruined on a 1 hour OST because of chronology problems & missing music.

  36. I speak the truth. Expandeds tend to run too long, can be a bit intimidating and impractical to listen to in one sitting, feature redundant tracks and other tracks that interrupt the flow of the composer's preferred musical narrative. But an OST is under no obligation to conform to the film's constraints, so the composer can edit and rearrange it to reflect how he feels it should be presented. And I like the concept album approach, it makes the score it's own thing on album.

  37. Monsignor (2019 Intrada release) by John Williams: While the new music isn't that much of a revelation, being variations on the main theme, I really love this new presentation. Kudos to Mike Matessino for another stellar John Williams release!

  39. No fair. You got to pick one for each. And yeah, Signs is still amazing to this day.

  40. It is indeed possible that this is from TROS but is not from a recording session. Remember that JKMS is who creates the parts from JW's sketches, so they start to be involved earlier in the process than the sessions. (That's not to say this can't be from the sessions, just that that's not the only possibility.)

  41. Kalifornia There were provocative memorable ads for this movie in DC Star Trek funnybooks. I saw it a few years later and enjoyed it. It perfectly captures the feel of driving across bumfuck America en route to Disneyland. I mean, California. I like that about it. Visually, it's awesome. The rural highway roads past sketchy gas stations and abandoned buildings, neon motel signs and the like. It all looks great and feels authentic. David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes are beautiful and ridiculously convincing as a couple. I've liked Brad in various movies, but his acting range usually leaves a lot to be desired. I mean, he's alright, but pretty unremarkable and samey a lot of the time. That's all I'm saying. This role is an exception. He's ludicrously over the top, but weirdly believable along with the constantly annoying Juliette Lewis at his side. It's one of those movies you really get in to and care about the characters. A massive amount of suspense is built up later in the flick when the unleashed Early takes Carrie. It somehow balances out the crude graphic murders and sex without becoming trashy and while the ending is incredibly predictable, you probably wouldn't have wanted it to go any other way. It's about the journey, not the destination.

  43. That cue WAS originally on the OST, then axed at the last minute - The Knight Bus was shortened at the last minute too, it originally opened with some of the Playground music, and didn't loop back on itself at the end like the final version

  44. JFK by John Williams The Post by John Williams
    1 point
  45. I agree. I never thought there was a 3rd motif either, the one is just ancillary part of the insecure Kylo Ren motif. I hope J.J. and Johnny will now finally unveil a full march variation on Kylo's main fanfare theme which Williams already teased us with at the end of the Last Jedi when Kylo storms the Resistance base. He could easily expand upon that and it would make sense now that Kylo has achieved his goal to become the supreme leader of the First Order. Time for the First Order March!
