Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood It’s QT’s Hugo or Hail, Caesar! A lot of love letter vignettes and less of a central plot to string them together. Found it to be a little too meta, even for Tarantino, but there were many great scenes. Tim Roth is credited as being cut from the film. At an already lengthy 160 minutes, I wonder how much didn’t make the final cut. I found it impressive that nearly all of the music was diegetic sound.

Just wait for the 30th Anniversary LLL possibly arriving later this year if the manufacturing plants and licencing agents decide to actually do some work!

@PoggoAOTS Hi Andrew! Apologies for being a pest -- just wondering if part two of your EMPIRE STRIKES BACK discussion might be coming in the foreseeable future? I know you guys are super busy so please know we love and appreciate all the work you put into these podcasts. In my opinion, you're unchallenged when it comes to the realm of film score podcasts, especially with the industry experience you 3 share. I'm assuming you guys have already recorded the episode but I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on JW's updated concert suite for Han Solo and the Princess, considering that theme originated in ESB and he chose to revise it nearly four decades later (with such melancholic heft). On a semi-related note, I saw that THE LAST JEDI was now available for live-to-picture performances. Are you allowed to say if the MSO has any plans to perform this score before year's end? I reckon the MSO would smash this score out of the park -- unlike the relatively restrained TFA, TLJ is brimming with orchestral highlights like Escape, Holdo's Resolve, The Spark and The Battle of Crait, where the orchestra takes centre stage. On a personal note, one of my favourite parts of seeing the MSO performance of THE FORCE AWAKENS at the Palais (other than your pre-concert discussion ) was knowing that John's score for TLJ was only one week away. It would be amazing if the same entree could be served before THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, potentially John's final entry in the main Star Wars saga... just saying.

That's really disheartening news, especially in difficult economic times. All I can say is -- if Mike/MV/MG/whoever reads this, we love the work you guys are doing and we'll keep opening the wallets to ensure it continues, if you'll indulge us! Here's hoping this is only temporary...

It looks like JW is a little bit more comfortable these days revisiting older, more obscure pieces from his repertoire. That being said, we don’t know which of those he would approve to be performed/recorded anew—from what it seems, he wouldn’t approve much of his really early stuff, while he seems okay with things from early 70s onwards, even though it’s a case-by-case basis. Lockhart however seems to know how to get things from him—during this year’s Pops season he performed “The Turbulent Years” from Nixon several times. I've been returning to Scriabin's 10th sonata regularly over the past few weeks. It's such an unsteady work, the trills start to be almost ludicrous at a certain point, but it's really a remarkable piece. I'm a bit addicted. It's definitely music for hot, humid summers.

Going off of @Marian Schedenig's recommendation in another thread, I've been looking into Hans Rott's music. Some very dynamic stuff from the guy. What I love is how he often sets up a phrase or progression to go in a certain direction, but then suddenly veers someplace completely unexpected, yet so much better and more satisfying. Too bad he buckled under the weight of his mind.

I love this shot from Shin Gojira. The point of view of looking up while driving by Godzilla, showing the immense size of the beast. The original Gojira’s first full shot of him is another favorite. The black and white film gives this scene a more realistic look as it combines live action of the people fleeing and the miniature set under Godzilla. Plus the scene taking place at night gives it a chilling feeling.

I stopped posting there because I was labeled a cat killer for posting a funny YouTube video of two cats brawling to Silvestri’s Predator.

And yet, somewhere, on someone's hard drive, exists probably an hour's worth of recorded music from TROS. How about that!

These two guys should also remix "The Mountain" from "Secret of the Sahara". The brass burst is so terribly restrained and brickwalled that it makes the whole track unlistenable. Sadly, it's one of the best tracks ever.

Maybe not quite, but if Chen thinks the story starts way past the hour mark he doesnt really understand 2001, or know what a story is or how it can be told.

Many so-called "classic" novels are a slog that only egghead academics can endure. I prefer quickie pulp novels or even movie novelisations, more fun.

During my teenage years and my early 20s I did a lot of transcriptions (all by ear, since to this day I can't really read notation). Sometimes after seeing a movie or hearing a theme I just had to rebuild it in MIDI, just to listen to it in isolation. Just watched Thor: The Dark World, it was the only MCU film I hadn't seen before Endgame and it seems I didn't miss anything. Sure there were a few moments where Loki had some more development to his character, but the rest of the film is entirely skippable and nonsensical. In the mid-credits scene, Thor's friends deliver one of the infinity stones to The Collector, believing it wise to keep the stones separate. However, it seems like they're giving it to this guy who immediately looks untrustworthy and we're meant to believe this was the Russo's setting up the Thanos and Infinity Stone arc? It's just shit.

It was a pretty bad year.

Apocalypse Now I like. The Thin Red Line is a Terrance Malick film and you either like those, or you don't. Gorgeously photographed, though.

How about a new recording (possibly an expanded concert arrangement) of End Title, End Cast from Jaws 2? Poor Jaws 2 is completely overshadowed (or should I say "swallowed?") by its predecessor, despite being a fantastic score in its own right. In fact, has ANY orchestra ever recorded anything from it? The City of Prague Philharmonic records EVERYTHING, and I don't think they've even touched it.

Something I really love about this piece is how subtle the transitions between the different movements are. Some of them are so well integrated that they almost become movements in themselves, as if they each tell their own story about how the subject gets from one scene to the other. And by the time you get to the polonaise you almost wonder how you ended up there, given that only 17 minutes ago you were in "fairy-tale" land with the glistening, whimsical orchestration, and there has not been a single break in the music since then. I don't know another piece of music which gives off that effect as well as this one...
