  1. The Force Awakens trailer gave way more goosebumps. This was an uninspiring trailer, but hopefully a good film.
  2. Abrams already brought the cinematography forward, along with some of the production design. RJ can take it further - I have a feeling he is adept at portraying wealthy and style (The Brothers Bloom) along with future-junkyards and natural landscapes (Looper). I shouldn't harbour high expectations, I know, but I do!
  3. If RJ's vision is bold and appropriate, then I hope it does. TESB was significantly different from Star Wars in important ways that are now respected. TLJ could be the best Star Wars film if the middle-of-the-road 'suits' let the saga's first writer-director since Lucas do the driving. It's going to take a lot of will-power for me not to watch the trailer as per RJ's advice, but if this film is as shocking as it might be, it could be worth it. "You'll find I'm full of surprises!"
  4. So, not even a Zimmer score. I think the suits kicked off Johansson because his style would've been too bold for their certified cash-juggernaut (surely Villeneuve would've wanted him as ongoing partner, especially after the twisted score to Arrival). And now it's the Zimmer name rather than the Zimmer product that they're using to sell it up, regardless of quality. Of course, I haven't heard it yet...
  5. I won't fuss over getting this one. I don't want any consumer to be screwed over, but I also don't relate to the need to own this. I predict a derivative, hurried Zimmer-salad of a score, and caution downloading and sampling before buying.
  6. Does anyone know how long Hans Zimmer had to write this score? Also, in other silly news, today Children's BBC show Newsround had a piece on the upcoming Blue Planet II (anyone seen the trailer with Thom Yorke's vocals mixed into his score?). The kid-oriented presenter said "who best to provide the music", they showed a snippet of interview with Hans in which he rolled off his impressive credentials: "I've scored Kung-Fu Panda, Madagascar and The Lion King!"
  7. So, I'm enjoying the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack, obviously. Does anybody have any recommendations, film score or otherwise, of percussion music similar to BM's action writing for this series? Boom-boom-klack---budduh-buddah-boom!
  8. Myth analysis is important, though. I think it's important to remember that Star Wars is popular because it's freedom fighters versus fascists with wizards in space.
  9. Glad he's gone, nothing he has made suggests he'd carry the gravitas of a Star Wars finale.
  10. I don't want to trawl this thread. Is it confirmed that Colin Trevorrow is no longer working on Star Wars?
  11. Tickets booked. About to hear some real cherished pieces come alive! Oh, and Across the Stars. ¬_¬
  12. https://www.thsh.co.uk/event/star-wars#tab0=details Main Title • The Flag Parade • Anakin's Theme • The Duel of the Fates • Across the Stars • Cantina Band • Battle of the Heroes • Here They Come • Princess Leia's Theme • Throne Room • The Asteroid Field • Yoda's Theme • The Imperial March • Parade of the Ewoks • Luke and Leia • The Forest Battle • March of the Resistance • Rey's Theme • Scherzo from X-Wings • Jedi Steps Many pieces I thought I'd never hear live, so I think I will go for this!
  13. I wrote this in the Episode 9 thread: Episode 9 has to come out after Kenobi. This is so that Ewan McGregor can star as a decently-scripted Obi-Wan in a uniquely-toned ultimate franchise-binding film all about the Force; Obi-Wan's coming to terms with his new role in a changed galaxy; his slow-burning shepherding as he watches a young Luke from a distance, carefully drip-feeding ideas about the Force and working to keep him hidden. All the while he practices his own meditation, learns more from Force-ghost Qui-Gon (Neeson, of course), maybe goes off planet to visit Yoda or research how ancient Jedi turned their own back from the dark side, finding it will all be about family, and realising his path to redemption will be through Luke...leading perhaps closely up to Episode IV from this angle. This will all be so that, in Episode 9, Alec Guiness Force-ghost can help Luke through a final hurdle of rebuilding the Jedi order or whatever the spiritual climax will be. Such a film could link the prequels, originals and spin-offs for a satisfying end to the 'four trilogies'... ...but I doubt they'll be that adventurous.
  14. Does anyone have a link to an article I remember reading, recommended in this very thread? I know there were a few. The one I'm thinking of was long, had diagrams, and an in-depth theme analysis of MG's Rogue One themes, showing how the Hope theme (sister to the SW Main Theme) is more simplistic.
  15. Oh yeah. Okay, I see how it was used in that way. It'd be a good one to carry across to the Han Solo film, but its melody is a little to regal for the rascal.
  16. Well I listened to SW Oxygen #32 (Restoring ESB music) and didn't hear any reference to Asteroid Belt sub-theme being used in the Hoth sequences at the start. I've also listened through the Hoth music and cannot here anything familiar from elsewhere. Anyone care to point out some time-stamps for the use of an Asteroid Belt sub-theme elsewhere in the score?
  17. I'm the same. Obviously I've deleted non-score tracks and listen to the presentation remaining, though it doesn't have much development or order, the 'sound' throughout is engaging, the instrumentation interesting and the action/travel music is great. Makes me want to see the film (but I probably won't pay for it, I just saw Planet of the Apes and Dunkirk on the same day!).
  18. Could you point me towards that episode of SW Oxygen please? I don't expect such pedantic thematic play. Remember that Powell is loose with his themes. I expect next-to zero familiar themes (maybe Jabba's?), considering this film is set in the underworld away from the war, but I anticipate a rich and rewarding score regardless.
  19. Complaints about Zimmer or Giacchino have a little to do with their actual compositions. They are mostly a reflection of someone's irritation with the quantity and enthusiasm of the composers' fans being disproportionate to the quality of the composers' works.
  20. Yoko Kanno is an amazing composer with huge range and a command of melody and tone, often reminiscent of Williams' 80s sound. Escaflowne is my favourite of hers (with this track Wings being my favourite). For a taste of her versatility, listen to one of the two Arjuna albums! Masato Nakamura's music for Sonic 1 & 2 will always be dear to me. Again, more mastery of melody; the thing that strikes me the most about this music is how the 16-bit manifestation of his compositions never did them justice. Just look up any of them on a Youtube synthesia video to see their complexity (for early 90s video game music, at least). I think all the remixes, piano and guitar covers you can find are testament to the quality of his 'miniature scores' for imagined worlds (and not just kid fans who grew up loving them, like me!). Here's an orchestra giving it a go:
  21. Wow, War is far better than Homecoming! Some standout tracks and a nice development of the material from the last film, and making me look forward to seeing this conclusion to the trilogy (which the music seemed to wrap up well).
  22. You can never hear a stand-alone score - a purely musical journey - once you have seen it twinned with the images it was written for. Avoiding listening to it before seeing the film is avoiding a unique experience that film music is great for. I remember the uplifting experience of travelling in my own imagination to tracks like The Scavenger and Scherzo for X-Wings. For this reason, I enjoy a score a few times before the film, then enjoy the film without getting drawn into the 'usage' of the score, then afterwards enjoy the score alone as it elicits those images, then enjoy the film and its music in greater depth later. There are quite a few scores in my collection that I currently have not seen the film(/TV) for at all (in order of composer, across my mp3 collection): Polar Express; Battlestar Galactica; Anna Karenina; Somewhere in Time; Jaws 2; Memoirs of a Geisha; Revolutionary Road; Escaflowne. There are a great many more that went unseen for a long time, or that I have only seen once a long time ago yet enjoy the score more recently.
