I listened to Magdalene yesterday, and I found it a great score, although there are a couple of obvious "influences" from Mozart's Requiem.
Check it out if you haven't yet.
Pity that he has disappeared from the film music world!
(Although to tell you the truth, I've only listened to 3 scores in total by him)

How on earth Paltrow won the Oscar over Blanchett's performance, I will never understand...

If you're a sucker for mournful Americana (which I am), then this 2009 score is for you. Beautiful, slow and poetic.
Just listening. It's quite good, yeah, but I don't hear any "Americana".
Although to be fair, I have connected the term with Copland and Williams.

Third listen to PATTON today. Hot damn, this score is good!
I don't know, I haven't warmed up to it at all..

Have you tried cleaning the disc with a cloth or even washing it?
I hear in other forums this helps a lot with your problem..
Now, that you mention it, I also have Close Encounters, and I wonder if it has gone bad...

But other than that I still struggle to make heads or tails of it. Maybe that's the point. I feel like I need to visit a Freud or a Jung and ask them what the film means.

I think the only movie I'd kind of like to own on Blu-ray but have never seen a domestic version, is Sphere. I can get the DVD for £1.
I see the (US) blu-ray of that one is also OOP and is going high at ebay!

Just purchased a used Nixon blu-ray (Kino edition - includes both theatrical and director's cut) for 118 euros from ebay!!
(It's OOP, that's why the price is steep)

Very good theme for a religious TV film, by Frisina, and overall a quite good score.

@filmmusic You should have been leading by example and put the videos into spoiler blocks. Now, after the first three or for entries in this thread it will take forever to lead the thread.
Oh, sorry, I didn't think about it. I will edit my post ASAP!

Tracklist is the 3 movement concerto and a 21 minute score suite
4 tracks?
Wow! I dislike long tracks...

It is? (this is referring to The Fifth Element by Eric Serra).
I love that score! You don't like it?Well, I like the slow romantic theme, but the rest from what I remember is sound design-y and some upbeat techno stuff and such..
That's why I said it was an unusual choice. I thought you liked mainly orchestral music.

Is there a top 10 overall favorite film music themes thread?
Or I should start one?
Although, again, I'd like it to be a non-Williams thread, because I'm sure for most of us Williams would dominate our lists.

It was the longer cut. I wasn't sure which one to see so went with this one. Did I make a mistake?
Karol
Well, I always watch the theatrical cut first, to see what the audiences experienced at the time of release.
Although, not having the whole wave thing plot in the end, I was left with questions in the end. I mean I felt "this is it?"

What is this?
A 1957 film with Elizabeth Taylor, and Montgomery Clift, Gone with the wind like.
It's included in the 100 essential film scores of the 20th century.

It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first soundtrack I've ever heard (I mean as an album, apart from the picture) and the reason I'm now a film music lover.
I also think the Love theme is my favorite love theme ever! (more even than any of Williams's love themes)

Listened to a few tracks and to be honest, this score is exactly what I would have expected from these two artists as they are mostly known for composing minimalistic melodic sound design and less for composing music.
Yeah, I guess you're right.
But somehow, I expected more for this kind of theme (although I haven't seen the film).

I was thinking of starting a thread about 10 favorite non-John Williams scores ever! (if I was to post my list for 10 overall favorite scores, I'm sure 8-9 out of 10 would be John Williams scores)
But I might as well post here my list:
In no particular order:
Poledouris - Conan the Barbarian
Elfman - Batman Returns
Kilar - Dracula
Rozsa - Ben-Hur
Green - Raintree County
Howard - Waterworld
Horner - Braveheart
Goldsmith - Legend
Nyman - The piano
Menken - Beauty and the Beast- Tom Guernsey and GerateWohl

The Abyss on the new 4K disc. Can't tell you how it compares in terms of look because I've never seen it before. Very enjoyable movie, very impressive technically. It's probably bit less than sum of it parts as it feels like some better Cameron films but it certainly does not stop me from enjoying myself tremendously.
Karol
What cut did you watch?

How can an Oscar nominated composer and and Oscar winner composer collaborate and make this outcome, I will never understand...

I guess orchestras always play The Duel from Tintin because it's available from Hal Leonard, but it's hardly my favorite piece from that score.
Tinker-Tin is much more original and fun for me...
