  1. Indeed! The above comparisons with The Hobbit aren't doing the Amazon show any favours...but boy was this first teaser bloody fantastic. The movies/products that both teasers are selling are just leagues apart (regardless of what we ended/end up getting).
  2. It was worse than I expected. Looked very generic fantasy... The video game-esque CG aside, the production design/visual aesthetic looks generally uninspired.
  3. I'm inclined to agree. I think the mania that might have once existed for classical fantasy of this kind, right off the brink of the original trilogy has been dramatically diluted by the endless barrage of minor fantasy with mediocre execution (a la Wheel of Time, The Witcher, and probably The Hobbit films themselves). Game of Thrones managed to become what it was for being essentially the antithesis of Tolkien in the same genre. I just don't see this drumming up that kind of enthusiasm, unless it ends up being really good.
  4. I didn't really like Us, but this looks good. Peele's got a nice eye for horror imagery.
  5. One of my favourite films of last year. The giants didn't look too great though.
  6. Agreed. Occasionally interesting visuals aside, it was mostly a dud.
  7. I recall season 2 having a bit of a dip but bouncing back wonderfully. It still had its magic. Hoping that holds true for the new season.
  8. It takes a few episodes to find its rhythm. But once it does, it really soars. If anything, it shows that despite his critics, Lindelof is definitely a strong writer.
  9. Indeed. Although I think Gyllenhaal's film is vastly overrated and doesn't belong in the same tier as the others you listed. I'm surprised Ducournau didn't get a nod, at least in Foreign Picture category. Titane had huge buzz in the summer. Yup. He was the real surprise here, coming out with four nominations. I watched Drive My Car just a few days ago. It's strong, even if it desperately needs a good half hour chopped off.
  10. She was also great in I'm Thinking of Ending Things. And pretty solid in The Lost Daughter...but that was mostly an Olivia Colman showcase anyway. Looks better than Annihilation. I like some of its framing ideas, but it does have this strange BBC look to it... A24's version of A.I.?
  11. Hmmm. Looks like Game of Thrones-lite. I believe it's been dismissed mostly as empty, derivative B-fantasy.
  12. Oh, I'm sure! And I won't be surprised at all if it all ends up being true. Just pointing out that it's not official yet! Here at JWFan, we'll make sure you get first credit for breaking the news though Chen
  13. Well, to be fair, it was more of an off-hand statement not to be taken too seriously But if I were to explain the sentiment, it would be that there's a certain poetry to Williams final film work being with his greatest collaborator, on what sounds like the filmmaker's most personal project since Schinlder's List. Who could ask for a more beautiful farewell letter to this long and fruitful chapter in Williams' career? Whereas the very existence of another Indiana Jones film reeks of more corporate interest to rake in that nostalgia money, and if we're being perfectly honest, probably not something Williams is very creatively interested in. Besides, I think we've been graced with enough Indy music for a lifetime. But yea, sure I am always down for more Williams.
  14. Zimmer has a good chance. But my bet is on Greenwood.
  15. Happy happy birthday Maestro!! It's been great seeing all the love for him pour out on the Internet, and see all the many many lives he's touched. Looking forward to many more years of his magic.
  16. What an absolutely fantastic piece. So refreshingly candid and honest compared to the usual puff stuff. This is also the first time I've seen him so explicitly and brazenly express his fatigue with film, which is completely understandable. In fact, I wish The Fablemans was his last film outing. Don't care too much for the Indiana Jones flick. I look forward to hearing more of his concert output, where clearly most of his joy lies in these days. What a class act and gentleman.
  17. I haven’t seen CODA, Belfast, West Side Story and King Richard. Licorice Pizza is my favourite film on that list. Power of the Dog will sweep best picture, best actor and best director. Hoping Greenwood manages to snag his Oscar too!
  18. Hands down one of my favourite shows of all time. I think it's one of the finest examples of how much can be accomplished in the medium of television writing, and how deep it can cut. I think its tonal changes, however wild, have been masterful and its stylistic flourishes never lose sight of its heart and characters. God bless Ann Dowd and Carrie Coon...the world needs more of them. Theroux also doesn't get enough credit for his performance and how it evolves throughout the show.
  19. It's the ultimate, self-righteous "Hollywood patting itself on the back" bs. So the industry is trying to lift it up as some "misunderstood prophetic warning" that the ignorant masses don't want to listen to...even though everyone knows it's really just a dud. There is nothing clever, witty or insightful that film has to offer.
