FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE for both. Gladiator is not a very good film. And its score is a bit eh.

Billing is decided by contracts. It doesn't dictate who they used to promote the film.

It's clearly the have decided to promote it around Gadot now since they can't promote it around Hammer. You could say in the current cast, Gadot is the biggest draw, so she gets prominent placement on the posters and in the trailers regardless of billing.

It's coming Feb 11. New poster and trailer.

Disney again pulling that "how to cut a trailer around your leading man by showing as few shots of him as possible" trick. Check out the teaser, this new trailer has way less Hammer.

I for one am absolutely elated with this movie's failure. It was remade for all the wrong reasons.

The new themes sound extremely generic. And the main theme is already generic.

After reading the replacement news, I revisited the score and decided to do a little write-up on the themes that develop throughtout the first season's score, masterfully crafted by Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli.

The score of the show is a great example of leitmotivic writing, with several themes developing through the season, and interacting with each other as the characters storylines mingle with each other. What makes it also especially interesting it’s the instrumentation, unique to each of the themes, which sometimes transfers to another theme to further explore the relationships between the characters.

    Geralt’s Theme (Main Theme)

    Ciri’s Theme

    Yennefer’s Theme

    Nilfgaard’s Theme

Renfri’s Theme (Song of the White Wolf)

Some episodes have some standalone ideas that relate to places or characters that only appear in one episode
    Standalone Themes / Motifs

So this is it. There are a lot of different motifs that play through the season and I hope that Trapanese can expand at least some of these, and I really hope that he can maintain at least some of that energy that the score for the first season has.

Whether it be the catchy main Geralt theme, the emotional developmentof Ciri's theme or the beauty in the simplicty of Yenenfer's theme, I think the composers crafted a score that really delivered on what the show needed to stand out, at least in terms of its musical tapestry. And I must say that it's one of my most listened scores of the past few years, especialy because of the pure entertainment value of it.

Altough I must say thatt¡ the album situation is quite a mess and really needs some trimming down and some rearranging of the tracks, but it's still quite a great listening experience, which I highly recommend.

Enjoy the write-up and feel free to leave any comment or correction.

Oh no! Why. Will they throw out the themes. Season 1 had several well established themes for several of the characters and concepts. Why do franchises today do this. If the actor can't be discarded wily nily and replaced (nor the showrunner) then neither can be the composer or at the very least the musical themes.

    So disappointing!

Danny Elfman made an immense contribution to the Spiderman films.

At their best, film scores can actually add production value to a film, making them seem grander and more expensive than they are. Williams does this all the time.

But Elfman too. His scores in the Spiderman films definitely provide that sense of scale and awe and wonder. It is very good work. Modern superhero scores could learn a trick or two from him.

    It's a strange conundrum.

I think it can be an ego thing.

I think the Elfman and Horner themes are just obviously better that his own theme. So maybe he felt egotistical in not letting them shine and keeping his own theme for all the big moments.

But he was not always this way. He was more than happy - more than happy - to give the stage to the Alexander Courage theme for Star Trek for extended period of times rather than his own new main theme which contrary to his Spiderman theme is quite good.

Fun fact, as I was typing the sentence above I tried to hum the Star Trek theme to myself to remind me how good it is and I ended up humming the Dr. Strange theme. Go figure!

David Yates directing is very standard - I would call it reliable and old-fashioned. I won't deny there is a certain stateliness to it. I think he's hired because he can be relied upon to deliver a decent product - which he has done everytime the script was good. He's not a director that can take a so-so script and turn it into a great film - great directors can do that. Instead, he will faithfully translate the script to the screen.

In that regard he is a writer and producer's dream - that is what they eventually want - a director who delivers the script on the screen and is not putting in two many distracting hijinks.

For what these films are, I think his direction is fine, competent, unobtrusive and inoffensive.

A thing I realized reading the summary of the film - they don't really have the 5 film arc worked out in any great detail. They still are introducing characters film to film based on their needs. There is no real set up and pay off from film to film. It is like they have the arc worked out in a page long outline and everything else they are filling in for each film.

This results in more disconnected and stand alone films rather than a continuous 5 film saga.

(This is also the approach used by the sequel trilogy of Star Wars and see how that panned out.)

I am not saying its the wrong way to do it, but it is one way to do it.

Wasn't this film meant to be set in Rio or somewhere colourful?! I thought they'd finally spark some life into this dreary mess, but it looks even more miserable and dull than the last two! How many times do we need to see people walking around grey, monochrome 1920s cities? And the only contrast is locations we've already seen ad nauseam in the Potter films.

Is Newt even the main character anymore? He's barely in the trailer but clearly he's still playing up that tedious, stilted delivery (no wonder marketing are sidelining him).

The nostalgia is cynical to the point of insult.
Look, it's Hogwarts! Remember that?! We only saw it in 9 films already! And look, the TRAIN that goes to Hogwarts! I clapped because I remember this from other films! Wow! The Room of Requirement again! Remember that place?!?! Look, it's old Dumbledore! Remember him? Wow, Dumbledore's brother in his dingy pub! Remember that!? Look, characters walking through a brick wall portal to another place! Remember this?! Look, it's Fawkes the Phoenix flying over Hogwarts! Remember this?!? QUIDDITCH! Remember this?!? "3 points to Hufflepuff," remember this?!?
Really shows how creatively bankrupt this franchise is.

    This seems appropriate:

And if there was an Academy Award for actors standing around watching other characters deliver monotonous dialogue, they'd name it The David Yates.
