  1. Careful with your language...it may be mistaken for a revelation of bigotry. Try thinking of a gentler way of expressing your incredulity.. I was assuming people would understand the context, which is, as I said, that I am jewish, and proud of it. I just find it surprising that almost every great film composer is a member of a minority which I happen to belong to.
  2. This can't be true.... almost every great film composer is jewish?
  3. I've recently seen 'The Usual Suspects' for the millionth time. It is one of my favorite movies, and has, without a doubt, the best ending ever to any movie. But I'm here to talk about the score. Does anyone else have it? I wanted someone elses opinion. I love it. 'New York's finest' is one of my favorite all time tracks. Your opinion would be apritiated. Also, this is the only John Ottman I've listened to. Does he have any other good stuff?
  4. I pity people who havn't seen this movie. it is one of my favorites' date=' with one of the not too many scores that can actualy scare you. I once had it on while I trying to fall asleep, but I did't remeber what was in my CD player, so all of a sudden I felt like I was in a nightmare, I was all sweaty and shaking. Lots. I usually try to see the film at least after I have the score, though not as often now after I watched Air Force One for that reason. But I wouldn't know some of my favourite scores if I always had to watch the movie first. quote] Well, I saw Air Force one when it came out, and it's one of the few movies (The Rock's on the list also) that I can see over and over again, without getting sick of. Not because of the movie, but only because of Goldsmith's amazing score, which the movie complements very well. I love 'Radeck's death', it is simply great. Goldsmith does a great job of getting you in the mood, with his wonderful solemn, slavic sounding music. I know it's not his best, but it's my favorite Goldsmith OST.
  5. I last night saw Gandhi for the first time. It was a great movie, and also had some great music to it. I looked on Amazon.com, and I couldn't find the soundtrack! Could it be that there's no OST for this movie?
  6. Really? I had no idea! I am jewish, and Stefancos, what you say is generaly true, but Goldsmith is, at least from my expirience not a strictly jewish name. Morlock- who's 100% jewish Leonard Bernstein's chichester psalms
  7. First of all, it's Goldsman, not Goldsmith. That's a huge difference, as Goldsman is a jewish name, while Goldsmith is really not. Spielberg said, on Oprah, that he was going to produce Geisha, and he decided not to direct it because he worked on developing the script, and wanted to give someone else a chance to take part in the movie.
  8. Well, he is producing and cowriting it! fighting for dough from Far and Away
  9. John said in an interview at the time that he both him and Spielberg didn't want an action score. They didn't see it as an action movie- it was a movie about friendship, sacrifice, with emotional depth- so thjat's how he scored it. Hymn to the fallen is one of the most betiful pieces he's ever written. Danny Elfmen's rendition of the mission impossible theme
  10. sorry, I wasn't thinking abut what I was saying. What I ment was, a bunch of the tunes I didn't care for. It's a great soundtrack, although with Silvestri's career, there are many better ones. preparing the cage from Jaws
  11. Well, back on topic- I'd have to also say Itzhack Perlmen. His 'Schindler's list' and 'far and away' are too great to pick anyone else. New York's finest from The Usual Suspects by John Ottman
  12. I got Silvestri's score for 'The Mummy Returns' mainly because I've always loved his 'Back to the future' and 'Forest Gump' soundtracks. It has a lot of junk, but a couple of the themes are really good.
  13. Here's my situation- I'm going to the August 4th afternoon concert (at 14:30. I'm only 16 and I'm going with a friend of mine, so we're taking a bus from New York to there. Getting there- we have many options of buses trains etc. The problem is I've not been able to find a bus/train that leaves later than 17:00. That is obviously not enough time. Do you have any tips/suggestions?
  14. I always loved the impirial march, so I got a CD called 'Star Wars and more' which is basicaly a pile of sci-fi scores. It had 4-5 Star Wars tracks, JP theme, Superman theme, plus Alan Silvestri's Back to the future and a few of Goldsmiths Star trek tracks. Then last year I was looking on Amazon.com and found the 'John Williams Greatest hits 1969-1999' and ordered it. I fell in love with it, and since than it's been growing every day. Just for the record- the first Soundtrack I've ever bought was 'The Rock', which is still among my favorites.
  15. Hey, I'm also going there for the August 4th concert! I wanted to go to The one on the 3rd, but my schedule won't allow it.
  16. Hey, I'm going to Tanglewood in August for a John Williams concert. Has anyone been there before? is anyone going there this year? is there anything else to do there? how is the hall? Any information would be apritiated.
  17. Hi, I'm looking to get a whole bunch of soundtracks in the summer. In addition to about a douzen Williams', I wanted to get a few more ST's from great somposers. Could you please recommend 2-3 obviously melodic good Scores by anyone in the world and if possible a short desciption? I point out obviously melodic since I want something that is not dependant on seeing the movie or liking it. I'd apritiate it if we left the topic closed to critism, so please just post your opinion and, unless positive, please don't post a reply to someone elses opinion.
  18. Unless your excluding the following two, I have to disagree. His themes in 'The Rock' were amazing and fit perfectly for the movie. Gladiator- the same. The Gladiator Waltz is wonderful without the movie, and coplements the movie outstandingly well. Same goes for 'The might of Rome', in a blatantly obvious Wagner type theme, but still very good and effective.
  19. @figo: could you post your own examples, since I realy don't know what your looking for. 'Jaws' is primarily fear driven. Characters are secondary. 'Jaws' would not be the least bit scary without the music. It would be intimidating for people who can't stand blood, but that's not psycological, that's just being grossed out. Same goes for 'Psyco'. I will admit I was wrong to put Star Wars there, but not by much. I disargee with you on 'The magnificent Seven'. I believe it was popular because of the eight actors, elevated to classic with the music, but certaintly not forgoten. Look at Oceans' Eleven- it is hardly a classic, but is remembered for it's cast. There are, as far as I've seen, not a single Williams, Goldsmith, Steiner or Herrmann scored movie not made better for it's music.
  20. I've never heard or seen Legend, so my vote goes to Far and Away.
  21. I am not wavering an inch from my original position. Well...... fine, it's genius not genious  John williams is the master. Goldsmith hasn't shown nearly as much diversity as him. Williams has done just about every kind of music, with notable exception of realistic dark themes, at which Goldsmih is the master. Williams has topped the field in heroic, dramatic and emotional scores. I am immune to insults, so please feel free to be as blunt as you want.
  22. This will probably seem unnecesary in a forum dedicated to John Williams, but I've got to say it. This happens to me every few months. It usualy happens when I'm thinking about how some of John's scores sound similar. Here I am, listening to a couple of John's Score that I havn't heard in a while, when it hits me- John Williams is a genious! Again, this may seem unnecesary, but as a fan, I always say that. I also always believe it to a certain extent. But this is the time when I whole- heartedly believe it! John Williams is the best movie composer who ever lived! It occured to me while listening to 'The long road to justice' from the Amistad ST. Just the beuty of the wonderful theme played quietly instrumentely- how could a mortal come up with that? Or on the 'Far and Away' ST listening to the great celtic music, or the theme done by Itzhak Perlmen. Or the wonderful, touching theme from 'Rosewood', which is a magnificent choir piece. Or the theme to the 'Witches of Eastwick', which is magnificently dark, in a field largely dominated by Danny Elfmen's scores. Just these scores make you realise how diverse and brilliant John is! No point in saying that here, but I had to get it out.
  23. Harry, I followed the link but don't see anything about the Soundtrack being included. I see that there are 3 discs, but it metions nothing (that I can see) about the soundtrack. Where do you see it? Thanks, BigJohn I was gonna say the same thing- No mention of the Sound Track.
  24. I don't fully understand what you mean, but I'll give it a go. I believe 'Psyco', 'Jaws' and 'Star Wars' amount to nothing without the music. I really mean that. Absolutly nothing. 'The Big country' is a great example. Without Jerome Moross' score, the movie really couldn't pass the message. 'Zorba The greek'. This is a movie that is undoable without Mikis Theodorakis' great score. 'The Reivers' is an example of a movie that should have been elevated by it's great John Williams' score, but wasn't really. I believe the score for 'The Rock' is extriemely under apritiated. IMO it's not just an example of the perfect score, but also the movie wouldn't have a base. It's one of my favorite movies just for the wonderful score. IMO it's also the best action score there is. This is one that only partialy counts, but still- The theme for 'Mission Impossible' you say those words, immidiatly you think of the amazing theme, which, IMO, was a major factor in the shows longevety. The last one I can think of right now is Ennio Moricone's classic score for 'The good, The bad and the ugly'. I dare you to imagine how horrific that would be!
  25. About the Spielberg- HP3 deal. Spielberg said in an interview a couple of months back that he was offered to direct just about every big box office hit in the past two years- LoTR, Spiderman, the grinch, HP, and many more. He regected LoTR because he was not exactly a Tolkein fan, and the movie should be made by one. Also it's too time consuming. The Grinch he didn't do because at the time he was developing MR and was working hard on A.I. The last two he regected because they weren't challenging. He would be directing two 100% sure box office hits, which means it would not matter how good or bad the movie is, still millions of kids would see them. He said he was debating, if Columbus backed away, whether to direct HP 3, because it was a much darker book, and he could connect to it. I personaly think he could do a great job- he's great with children and has already worked with some of the adult cast before. I am 100% sure that john would be te sole composer on that movie, if it was to occur.
