  1. With straight-up infantry based war films I mainly like watching for any ruthlessly convincing battle melees which showcase a director's talent for action staging, and I'm less interested in the philosophical meaning and narrative behind it. Which is why Saving Ryan is a good not great example of a brilliant but cinematically flawed war film. I do have plenty of time for sociopolitical content in the medium, but I'm more drawn to murky explorations like The Killing Fields or Paths of Glory than I am Spielberg's typical noble heroics. I just imagine Mel to be good at making one go shiiiiit at the sight of a poor soldier's immediate predicament.
  2. Randomly watched Peacemaker. For the life of me I can't abide the unrelenting tidal wave of superhero media, but I admit I have maintained a curious penchant for the more offbeat "mature" efforts being made alongside the glossy Disney bombardments. This one was definitely worth it and I preferred it to the last season of The Boys. James Gunn undoubtedly has a good grasp of character dialogue which on the face of it is funny and irrelevant but is actually carefully crafted to tell a low-key alien invasion story with well drawn characters in a way which feels reasonably different and rowdy. Plus it has the most watchable/listenable opening credits sequence since The Orville. I preceded it with Suicide Squad, which was quite good but boring after an hour.
  3. So Hacksaw is good then? Haven't seen a good war film for a while.
  4. My missus always goes to bed when I put fellowship of the ring on while drunk, she really gets me.
  5. Well, a prime example would be the original Star Wars trilogy: famously constructed and largely made (with a British crew) in the England - but never thought of as being anything but major Hollywood blockbuster movies. Rightfully so. Same goes for Superman. To an extent, Indiana Jones. Hearts and minds, I guess. I'd argue that any "country of origin association" is something more abstract than you contend.
  6. I would never have known Columbia was involved had you not mentioned it. I only watched it recently too.
  7. The proof will be in the pudding. For instance, does Mangold have the balls, or rather, the clout, necessary to depict moments of sudden extreme violence, in a Disney Indiana Jones? I highly doubt it.
  8. I've said it before but Better Call Saul lost its hook for me after Chuck was written out and the key dynamic between him and Jimmy was lost. Mike's arc holds no interest for me whatsoever, not anymore; I initially mostly enjoyed his portion of the show, but I grew bored with his grumpy thug with a heart subplot even prior to the most recent season. I'm still yet to watch the final episode of the last season, bored with it that I'd become. It's been years. I'll of course have to make an effort with the finale, but only really because it'll all have been a big waste of time if I don't. Better Call Saul's quality and consistency were a match for Breaking Bad for three of its seasons. But in the end, the latter is still the unwaveringly brilliant (and funner) older sibling.
  9. Fast tempo Jurassic Park. Totally undermines the piece to the point of my disregarding it entirely. The original recording remains absolutely essential to a particular generation of fans, which makes Williams directed concert performances all the more frustrating.
  10. One of two baffling bad choices made by Williams over his performance career.
  11. Anyone else think Adventures on Earth is crap compared to Adventure on Earth?
  12. Calling Villeneuve the Spielberg of today is like calling Giacchino the Williams of today. Which should always be met with an impromptu visit by Will Smith.
  13. Gotta feel for "CODA" after Smith stole all the attention away from their win. Although to be fair I had never heard of the film prior to this. Smith's acceptance speech (before his apology)... he's clearly gone now, he's left us. Consumed by his sense of "humble" self-importance and duty as a river to the people.
  14. But at no point does he say "oot" instead of "out".
  15. It's Chandler humour applied to other media. American snark. It's not that becoming nor especially funny to me, at least as a Brit. I've watched the Batman one above though and I admit it was mildly entertaining. But it's personally not something I'd regularly tune into, gimmicky as it is.
  16. This is like those "everything wrong with X" videos. Basically these guys were those really annoying forum personalities before they found a platform on YouTube.
  17. I found it odd that all fringes were outlawed on that planet colony. Only terrible haircuts permitted.
  18. The game has notoriously bad frame pacing actually, which I had to get over.
  19. Watched the opening 20 mins (the big pre credits introduction) and holy shit it's horrrrrible. I hyperbole much? I dare you to see for yourself. I had to turn it off - not because it was unwatchable, but because I was sleepy AF (it's late). With around 20 mins remaining to see of the first episode, I have to really wonder who this is supposed to be made for. Because based on what I have seen so far, I have no clue. And wait until you see the gore! Imagine The Clone Wars from AOTC but with Saving Private Ryan level viscera in the presentation of the battle melee... the tone here is absolutely all over the place. Yikes! Sorta looking forward to rubbernecking my way through the second half. Oh, it's every bit the 343i/Amblin production; at least as far as set/ costume/lighting/soundtrack design go. Really baffling stuff.
  20. Talking about Bloodborne has made me look and think about at it again, I wish they'd bring it to PC at long last. For me it is a visual masterpiece, one of the most eerily evocative worlds I've had the pleasure to explore in games.
  21. There's very, very little in the way of jank in these games, although to the uninitiated I can see why it might feel that way after players get their arse handed to them by superbly designed but brutally uncompromising combat mechanics. At least in the first few hours.
