So as is the way nowadays, the grubby minutiae postmortem of the trailer is well underway on all social media, as we now expect. Basically what Fellowship of the Ring would have been subject to had the internet been as entrenched back then as it is now. It would have been a prerelease demolition job. I remember seeing the very first teaser for Jackson's LotR and just feeling hyped. Simpler times.

This is true actually. A lot of the groundwork is actually fairly well elaborated on in The Lord of the Rings.

I don't get the intense fretting about the man who fell to earth thing tbh and well I'm not hardcore Tolkien enough to care about story embellishments and inventions so long as they're well written and feel compelling - ie absolutely nothing like the woefully misjudged padding out of the Hobbit flicks. I think the very worst thing you could do with this is to go in with a scholar's attitude towards everything that happens, especially since much of it is only loosely based on the appendices to begin with. I don't even mind that there's "hobbits" present (Harfoots), and hadn't really given this any thought given that I probably already expected them to be a part of it anyway. People should probably also be ready for a ton of fan service, otherwise why would they ever risk making this in the first place?

It could be King Kong all over again. Perhaps Shore being rightfully precious concerning his ownership of this franchise is not something the inexperienced producers were banking on. But it's a no Shore no go, for me.

Nuts to think this is pretty much the result of just his making of The Lord of the Rings (including the building up of WETA as a major industry SFX house). These films just haven't gone away, they haven't died down or faded over the years. During the late 80s and early 90s even Star Wars didn't manage to keep its profile and fandom at the level LOTR has managed over the years.

To go against the grain (and my own expectations), I'll be honest and admit this appears to be more visually cinematic than I anticipated it to be based on the recent unnaturally glossy promo images; the photography being closer to "Game of Thrones" than "Wheel of Time" that I had been fearing. Absolutely terrible trailer music notwithstanding, but that's par for the course these days. Even still, when is this awful trend going to end? It really works hard to undermine the Middle-Earthian presentation here. "It looks like The Hobbit." Well that would have been the sum of all fears for me, but these particular shots don't look anything like what I remember seeing in those overly processed to within an inch of their lives Hobbit movies: I see more of the original trilogy in the general photographic style on show here, which is a big surprise to me. So yeah, overall, I'm still hopeful, 'specially since Shore is on board. Will reserve judgment till I've actually watched the thing.

In my lifetime I think I've probably only seen about four Pachino pictures. Never saw the appeal.

The theatrical version is easily superior. The longer cut plays havoc with the pacing, quite badly.

It ended on season 5 or 6, which I've yet to watch actually. I've seen them all bar the final season.
