Dixon Hill got a reaction from bruce marshall in Hans Zimmer's THE THIN RED LINE (1998) - 2019 4-CD La-La Land Edition
Really special score.  The amount of material makes it hard to come up with a truly definitive presentation, but it's great to see it getting this treatment.  Really a masterwork of film and music.

Dixon Hill got a reaction from Suro-Zet in What Is The Last Score You Listened To? (older scores)
I hadn't gotten around to this score yet, but this is actually kind of disappointing.  It's awfully generic.  This is what caused Davis to lose me somewhat with the Matrix sequels, treading a bit more into familiar blockbuster symphonics.

Dixon Hill got a reaction from Naïve Old Fart in Rachel Portman, anyone?
I loved her in West Side Story.

Wrong choices!  The right choice is Wrong Choice, Right Choice.

Dixon Hill got a reaction from artus_grayboot in First Thread! An alternate perspective on The Force Awakens music:
Sony is relatively dry and also quite shallow.  There isn't as much depth possible as in other spaces, and that lack of depth adds to the intimate feeling.  And, it's a very wide space despite not being deep, which emphasizes "in your face" even more.

Obviously, recording and engineering techniques can make scores recorded there sound very different, but TFA to me sounds like it has bare bones mixing going on and is pretty faithful to the conductor's perspective - wide, with the winds a little buried, and the brass rather strident and upfront.

But my ears aren't what they used to be.

    A very fine piece!

And, an example of how to not be a Williams imitator.  Marcus' love for John is obvious in how fully he's absorbed what his music is about into his own psyche, not through the dutiful reproducing of various surface details and mannerisms that so many others are guilty of.

He watched the first episodes tonight - just for Ewan really - and I can't say it was that enthralling.  Came here to see what this place thought.  Music is just sort of there, innit?

Reports of my banning are greatly exaggerated.  I am merely retired from JWFan, the internet, and music making as a whole.  I seem to only ever check this place anymore when I'm away from home.  Hope you're all well.

Dixon Hill got a reaction from Once in How long did it take John Williams to compose his scores?
How old are you?  Are you from America?  All due respect but perhaps if you're a younger person who was geographically removed from it it's hard to understand.  I'm pretty far from a flag waving God bless the USA type who will get indignant at the suggestion that it's not a "big deal" but I was blocks away from what was happening in Manhattan, I knew people who died, and you'll have to forgive me if it continues to loom in my life as a "big deal."  Fuck's sake.

Dixon Hill reacted to jocores in "A Gathering of Friends" Williams / Yo Yo Ma album with Pablo Sainz-Villegas & Jessica Zhou
Pablo Sáinz Villegas, the spanish guitarrist who premiered 10 years ago Rounds, has just revealed in an interview for the spanish newspaper El Pais that he received a letter from John Williams inviting him for a collaboration with Yo Yo Man and him for a new album they are recording with the New York Philharmonic.

Dixon Hill got a reaction from bruce marshall in Jerry's synths - wadda ya think?
Just to expand on this now that I have time.
This attitude of segregation is exactly what Jerry was trying to abolish by his use of electronics. Despite the varying musical success of these efforts, the act itself must be commended. He and others viewed synthesizers as the next logical addition to the symphony orchestra, and many now share this sentiment, including myself. Sound producing devices are sound producing devices, and to ignore the immense sonic possibilities afforded by these instruments or to relegate them to "seasoning" would be criminal. And this is just speaking of synths in the orchestra. Their independent capabilities shouldn't even need mentioning.
Point is, I wish the attitude of marginalizing electronics would just die.

Dixon Hill got a reaction from bruce marshall in Hans Zimmer's WONDER WOMAN 1984 (2020)
Perhaps you could start a Twitter poll.  "Is Hans Zimmer...a liar?"  I'm sure the intention would just be to start a conversation.

Seriously, your wretched axe grinding is painfully shameful at this point.  Captain Marvel is taking a chance on a relatively green composer because she's a woman, and I think that's laudable, but bringing in a relatively green composer on a major franchise film is not about to become commonplace, regardless of gender.  Do you think Hans stepped in front of other women in line who had a real shot at this one?  Sadly no, I expect the studio wanted what they wanted and it was Hans and Hans alone.  And by the way, what one may say about not doing any more of one particular variation of the job that they live and breathe doesn't mean much.  That the guy loves what he does and this time didn't feel like turning down the opportunity doesn't make him a liar, not in any meaningful sense.  I'm sure you, like all of us, have said "never again" about things you then went ahead and did again later.  Luckily for you no one has recorded these in online articles to wave in your face later on and call you a babbling attention whore.

The biggest nuisance is the large amount of music that I don't have on disc. Digitally bought/acquired stuff.
