  1. I think the piece you're referring to might be Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings." It was played on the radio during JFK Jrs. funeral, at the funeral of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and on September 15 2001 in honor of the victims of 9/11: youtube video of that tribute . A NPR piece about the song can be found here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6427815
  2. I guess I am as well. I also agree with Maestro in that these franchises are quite different from each other. Star Trek is an optimistic glimpse of the future while Star Wars is a magnificent space opera. And they're both awesome. Favorite movie of all time: Star Wars. Favorite tv show of all time: Star Trek: The Next Generation. I love my medical PADD aka PDA.
  3. I think Alan Menken's work for Disney has been absolutely fantastic and deserving of his Oscar wins. Plus, even he wishes he could score films like Goldsmith and Williams: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKhtZ7F13UQ - A user who'd listen to Hunchback's "Out There" when stuck in the library for months.
  4. Ok folks, let's not get too weird here or else I'll have our medicine team do a PEC and have somebody committed for a day or two, just until they cool off As for the letter responses, I never got one , but I might try again sometime. Most likely I sent it to the wrong address, although I wasn't really expecting a response anyway. I wonder if the Maestro's ever been to New Orleans...
  5. Andy Trudeau over at NPR picked Atonement: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...toryId=19251328 You can hear a track from each of the scores and read his analysis.
  6. Atonement was my pick. Ratatouille got old quick for me. I just didn't like Yuma for some reason. Must be in some kind of orchestral, classical/romantic period phase.
  7. Not sure if anyone would want it, but I went ahead and stream-downloaded the source file directly from the New York Philharmonic RTSP server. The file is NYP_20060613.rm, runs at 176kbps, and is ~24.8MB. There shouldn't be any quality difference from the mp3s if they were recorded directly via the sound card.
  8. Throughout much of Europe and Asia it isn't a big deal. In the U.S it has become a big deal, due to the circulation and propagandizing over decades, of fraudulent scientific data linking smoking with all manner of problems and illnesses. Greece and Japan have statistically the longest life spans, in addition to having by far the highest smoking rates by percentage of population. (Google it, anyone who doubts) How can this be? primarily - Diet, and attitude. It's a question of living, as opposed to the quasi-life existence of one who lives in fear that their lifespan may be shortened, since they were never really alive to begin with. I say let Williams enjoy his Cigar, his Cigarette, his Brandy, his Whiskey, whatever. When you get to that age, those kind of pleasures are far more likely to give a man a reason to live on than a fucking carrot smoothie. I'm all for letting a person do the things they truly enjoy. But as far as the "fraudulent scientific data" goes, I find that really hard to chew whenever I see cases of lung cancer. I think the diet/attitude thing is a good point though. It's probably useless to think about, but I can always hope that Williams has a balanced lifestyle and that he sticks around for a long, long time.
  9. I think the academy enjoys rewarding people who haven't won before, which is pretty dumb when it comes to movie scores. Although 謝謝 Academy for letting Ang Lee win, even though I still think Crouching Tiger was better than Gladiator.
  10. Andy picked Memoirs of a Geisha http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...storyId=5245902
  11. The Adtunes forum is probably the best place to find answers for this kind of thing. Have you looked at this thread: http://adtunes.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22824 The consensus seems to be that the first cue was indeed "The Perfect Storm."
  12. Perhaps he does have a big ego. But I've yet to see or hear an interview where he wasn't humble, like on the iTunes track with Yo-Yo Ma. And how can Williams become the most "Academy Award winning human of all time?" A different genius by the name of Walt Disney won 32 before he died.
  13. My friends and I were born and raised on Star Wars, so that's where I knew the name. Around 92', there was a PBS special called "Salute to Symphony" during Williams' final year as Pops conducter. Williams conducted the Boston Pops in Throne Room & Finale from Star Wars: A New Hope. And after Williams sat down, Seiji Ozawa suprised the Maestro with the Flying Theme from E.T. It remains to this day one of the most favorite memories of my life, and I only watched it on TV! That solidified Williams as my favorite modern composer.
  14. Sorry, but is there any chance someone could upload the movie to a file-sharing site like www.rapidshare.de? I know I shouldn't have missed the performance, but I had exams that morning and was asleep by mid-evening.
