  1. Interesting perspective. I agree. There are some highly artistic and important films that I would imagine would be boring for a composer. On the other hand, bad movies (as long as they have passion) can be a dream to score because of their big swings and misses creating a big open space for fun score writing.
  2. Erm...okay. His Shyamalan scores are his finest works of art. Masterpieces - Unbreakable Signs The Village Lady in the Water Last Airbender. Great Scores - Sixth Sense The Happening Phoning it in for a horseshit film - After Earth
  3. Oh my god! - "An all-new recording of music for M. Night Shyamalan’s most acclaimed films. For this album, James Newton Howard created eight suites that are piano centric and include new and original material." This is going to be special. Tears streaming down my face. It's like I'm listening to the first piece in a new score for the sequel to the Village. Holy shit this album is going to destroy me.
  4. I wonder how the production of the 3rd film specifically is going. There are strikes yes, but would Cameron participate as a writer now living in New Zealand? The entire 3rd and 4th film are written in full scripts and are mostly filmed. I believe all of 3 and 80% of 4. So surely WETA are working right now on finished shots. I don't see how the situation in Hollywood can stop the production of the 3rd film specifically.
  5. Just saw it. I thought it was brilliant. The test scene was overrated. It was good, but nothing overly spectacular visually. The real brilliant visuals were when Oppenheimer was imagining the effects of the bomb when talking to people. That was haunting and amazingly staged and filmed. Very disturbing. The performances were sensational. Music was great. Set ups and payoffs were nicely framed. Overall, very impressive.
  6. Good point. First 4 HP films were pretty separated in your mind in style etc, and then 5 onwards all blend together as one big story of interchangeable parts. First 4 Mi movies are very distinct and easily separated in your mind. And then 5 onwards can be easily interchangeable again and not distinct at all. It was a mistake changing the formula of different creatives, because it's so much more fun to see different takes on the same subject. I haven't listened to Balfe's scores outside of the films, but I enjoyed his Fallout score in the film. Hated his Dead Reckoning score in the film.
  7. Good lord your explanations are awful. A mixture of "well the character is stupid" and "well the character is stupid." That's just bad writing. Once all the hype of "it's a Tom Cruise action movie, it has to be great" dies down, people will look at this film properly and realise it's pretty awful all-round. The bad box office numbers are a pretty good indication of the true word of mouth. People are not really recommending it outside of fake twitter land, and it's definitely going to lose a lot of money.
  8. Please by all means, explain why any of the points I made were wrong. The dialogue in this film was spoof level bad. I mean, the villain actually screamed "ETHAAAAAAAAN!" haha. Good lord.
  9. So Ethan Hunt isn't able to sneak on a train undetected? Then why did he crash through the window and make a bigger scene than if he walked on? Or why not just wear a makeup disguise like he has in previous films without a mask maker? Your reason doesn't make sense because he walked around an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT with no mask haha. He walked into an international airport and an Italian police station without a mask in this film haha. But can't get on a train... Why did Poms character have to jump on the train too? Why not just walk on? Why hide Gabriel in a techno-coffin haha? Why not just walk on together? Why did Benji ride in a driverless car when the entity can hack it and drive him off a cliff? Why did it take them until the end of the film to switch to analogue coms, when they knew the entity could hack anything it wanted? Why did Grace not run away from Gabriel? Why did she choose to fight an assasin in a knife fight? Why didn't Ilsa have a gun to fight Gabriel? Why a sword? Why didn't Benji take his tools with him to the bag with a bomb in it when he suspected it was so? Why didn't the white widows bodyguard brother notice his sister has different coloured eyes after she came out of her train cabin with different clothes on? why did Poms character manically and happily laugh whilst murdering countless people, including trying to murder Ethan and Grace, yet decided to be good at the end because she's a nice...person now...I guess? Why would the head of US intelligence not know what the IMF is? And why would he tell Gabriel that "I'm the only one who knows a certain piece of information, therefore definitely don't kill me right now or anything." Haha The writing is terrible.
  10. Please explain why he couldn't just get on the train like a passenger?
  11. Why didn't Ethan just get on the train like a normal person...? Previous Mi movies had plot reasons for the big stunts, like the Fallout helicopter stunts were because Ethan had to get the trigger for the nukes from Cavill. Etc. This one they just said "he can't just get a ticket and get on the train because...erm...we want him to jump off a cliff..." Man, this film completely falls apart with any sort of thought. Because they needed a car chase and were too lazy to give a legitimate reason for it. She was a clone of Newtons character from Mi2
  12. I might have to sit this one out. Because I'm baffled by the praise for this film. I thought it wasn't very good initially, but with further thought and breaking it down in my head, it gets even worse. To the point of being pretty bad all round. It falls completely apart with any thought at all about the plot.
  13. Completely agree. There was basically no character development or character arc for anyone. All characters were the same at the beginning and the end. To be perfectly honest, there were no characters in this film. "Let's do some stunts. Oh and also I guess we should put a story in there too."
  14. After seeing the film and being physically annoyed by the score, I wont be listening to it on its own. It seemed the entire film was just a deafeningly loud constant repeat of the same 3 descending notes of the theme. I don't recall the last time I was actually seriously pis**d off with a score during a film. I actually wanted to leave about 30 mins into it, because the film was laughably bad and the score was already repetitive.
  15. Just saw it and was very disappointed. I was looking forward to it as a fun, interesting, smart action film. It was quite bad all round. The direction was utterly terrible and baffling. For some reason, every shot of an actor seemed to be an extreme close-up. And at least 50% of the film was in dutch angle! The action was okay. Nothing revolutionary or mindblowing. John Wick 4 and even Fast X had more inventive and interesting action set-pieces. And the big cliff jump that has been overhyped to oblivion looked CGI because they had to replace the giant ramp with a giant CG cliff... The plot was over the top and dramatically cringe-worthy. It would have been more at home in a Fast and Furious film. In fact the plot of Fast X is actually more believable and less unintentionally funny. The performances are bad. And I mean really bad. E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E is overacting like mad. Every line seems to be delivered like a soap opera. So so so dramatic. I don't recall a single line delivered like a normal human being. Spoilers - Oh and the music was obnoxious, overly loud and extremely repetitive. Such a shame.
  16. At 0:58 as he builds to the theme. It's just so rousing. And I like how Giacchino references it in a similar style scene as John Carter escapes. At 0:18 - And they both blast straight into great renditions of their respective main themes.
  17. Wow. I wish I was there! Can you describe anything that you remember about the suite? Like what was included and how it flowed etc. Was it primarily mini thematic suites within it or was there any room for big action moments within it? I hope the FMF post an official video of the suite someday, like they have with previous years' concerts.
  18. My favourite piece from the score. That opening of the Indy themes is beyond gorgeous. It feels so tender and warm. The flute and clarinet talking to each other, and the later french horn. My lord.
  19. Just got done with my first listen through. (Haven't seen the film. Not really interested because it doesn't look good, and I already know by the state of modern cinema, that it's going to be an overly-long, CGI-filled mess that's all about Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whilst Indy is told he's an old, washed-up relic that has just given up on life and has got divorced from Marion and is a dead-beat dad.) If anything I said was spoilers, then that's kinda sad how predictable they treat him, considering I have no idea what happens in the film. But anyway, onto the score haha. I enjoyed my listen through. But I noticed that it's dominated by Helena's theme (which already tells me a lot about the film). Her theme has some nice variation, but the opening phrase of her theme is used too much. Indy feels basically none-existent in this score, except for a couple of moments. If you told me this was a score to an Indy spinoff where he isn't in the film, but is mentioned casually a couple of times, then I'd believe you. I don't recall a single time in the score where Indy's themes are given huge, grand, heroic moments that last for a nice while. He just gets a couple melancholic moments (which are lovely, like in the piece 'To Morocco'). But overall, it's nice to hear Johnny do another action/adventure score, however it never feels like an Indy score for me. It's more like a spinoff film score for Helena.
  20. Cameron will only be 76 for Avatar 5 in 2031. That is younger than many directors still making films now, including Spielberg, Scorsese, Ridley Scott etc.
  21. This was expected tbh. 2 years between each sequel was unrealistic. I'm fine waiting 3 or 4 years between each film. It's what it used to be like anyway. Alien to Aliens was 7 years. Terminator to T2 was 7 years. ANH to Empire to ROTJ was 3 years each. Also it builds anticipation among general audiences. If it came out next december like planned, people might be like "oh... another one?" Whereas make it many years and they'll be like "oooo another one!"
  22. This just makes me more sad that I couldn't find a way to buy tickets. I hope they at least release the full suite footage. Apparently it was 17 minutes long!!
