  1. It's pretty easy and digestible to listen to each episode's score on their own.

I was overwhelmed at first, but then stopped trying to madly listen to all 72 pieces at the same time. It's been weeks and I'm only on episode 8. I'm already very familiar with each score and their ideas, as a result.

They're all like mini-movies anyway, so each score works narratively as a solo entity. Some have their own main theme that carries throughout their episode, with development and resolution.

  2. Still listening through the score, one episode at a time. I've re-listened to each episode over and over again, treating each one like its own separate score to be examined and enjoyed.

On episode 7 at the moment; From Unknown Graves. Debney really shines in this one, with the delicate and romantic writing. The piano and woodwinds are particularly beautiful and I love the patience of this episode's score. It breathes and flows gorgeously.

I really hope that they show both Avatar movies in cinemas in the fall of 2024 before the third movie is released in December. Seeing these kinds of epics at home is just not the same thing as seeing them in the cinema, something which I am thinking more and more these days after having seen the LOTR trilogy on the big screen.

Definitely. I missed when they re-released the first one before Way of Water came out. So I'd love to see it again in the cinema before the 3rd one. It's been 13 years since I've seen it in all its glory with 3D etc.

I'm going to see Aliens tomorrow night. It's a one-off special showing at my local cinema. It's one of my all-time favourite films, and I've never seen it in the cinema before. It's all booked full as well, so it should be a fun experience with some diehard Aliens fans.

I can't believe that in the last month I've basically only seen Cameron films as a pure coincidence haha. The Way of Water of course (about 700 times) and then Titanic's 25th anniversary re-release, and now a special Aliens screening.

    That was yesterday

Haha I know. It's back for 1 week.

Just saw it last night. Even with it being out for 5 months, and it starting at 9 and finishing at midnight, and on a weekday, there was a decent amount of people in there. Crazy.

I'm sure Cameron could just leave it in cinemas for the rest of time and still people would go.

  5. I saw a clip on twitter. I hope it was a clip from a game or perhaps a fan-made thing, but can anyone confirm whether -

    Spoiler

The enterprise D suddenly became the Falcon and flew through the deathstar Borg cube like it was a tiny fighter ship and not a trillion tonne, mile long graceful city in space?

However, I'm glad for the Trek fans that really enjoyed this season. I wish I could have connected to it enough to continue after episode 3. I hope we get a Star Trek Legacy where the showrunner for this season really gets his vision from the start and doesn't have to work around Kurtzman shite and new trek trash aesthetic. But it appears that they're going right back to Kurtzman style new series after this... they never learn.

Agree with almost everything you wrote. I'll just add that I think Orville has been outstanding from the start, and I'd even say I enjoyed the first couple seasons more than the third. But they're all outstanding.

Orville is Star Trek in everything but name; nuTrek is Star Trek in name only. Picard Season 3 is definitely a step up, but still has many of the same issues that plague all nuTrek shows.

Yeah, I was just comparing season 3 of Orville to season 3 of Picard. I also love season 1 and 2 of The Orville and think all 3 seasons are just as great as each other.

  7. So apparently Franglen is going to be in Krakow for the Krakow Film Music Festival, and they're going to be performing pieces from the Way of Water at two separate concerts.

I would bloody love to go, but unfortunately it's not possible for me at the moment. I have gone to three Krakow FMF's in the past. They were fantastic, and Krakow is a beautiful place and they really value Scores there. I met many composers and heard them talk about their work for hours and attended many brilliant concerts there. So so crushed I can't attend this year and specifically to miss Franglen's Avatar music performed live.

I truly hope it gets concertized and performed at general concerts in the future.

  8. Orville season 3 is the best Trek since the 90's.

The core of Star Trek has always been an optimistic exploration of ideas, where we question our moral choices and beliefs, while having an adventure into the unknown.

The Orville is every single one of those and more, including throwing in the Trek films levels of Score quality.

I've since checked out the overt fan-service moments of Picard season 3, such as the SPOILER ALERT I GUESS - recent Enterprise D member berries and it's heartwarming yes, to see them celebrate the Enterprise and the crew like they are meaningful to the audience instead of the trend of deconstructing and insulting them, but it's still very in-your-face fan service that feels very artificial and extremely forced. It's kind of having the same effect on older Trek fans as Force Awakens did on older Star Wars fans, with the "member han solo!!!?" "Member x-wings?!?!" Etc etc. They were all overwhelmed with the initial hit, but after they came down from the high, all realised how ultimately empty it is and ended up reevaluating their thoughts. I'm not saying Picard season 3 is empty. It is a big step in the right direction and I do understand the love for it from my fellow Trek fans. It does satify many much needed and sorely missed Trek attributes.

As a huge Star Trek fan, I was insanely moved and emotionally in awe of the launch of the Orville in the first episode of season 3, and that show has zero nostalgia, zero connection to decades of previous characters and ships etc, but as the Enterprise D launched with the original crew, I was happy and it was heartwarming yes, but I felt far more from the similar scene in Seth's 'essentially' Star Trek tribute show. E.g. Seth launched the Orville with a grand musical and visual fanfare for what seemed like minutes. Treating it with the honour of an iconic ship like the Enterprise D. Yet the Enterprise D was launched in about 10 seconds on Picard.

  9. Finally decided to give in and check out Picard season 3...

I don't get the hype. I gave up half way through the 3rd episode. It's the same old miserable, depressing story with a cliche laughing villain on a Nemesis style evil looking pointy ship with the same old Kurtzman style mystery box plot with a planet destroying super-weapon... And I'm so sick of all the ships being pitch black inside!

The Orville is the true continuation of Trek. Self-contained episodes that explore interesting moral questions in a fun and optimistic way. And they actually explore strange new world, and they seek out new life! etc. And the ships have actual lights turned on inside!

I'm officially done with Trek. I was sucked back in by hearing good things, but nope, I don't see it. I'll stick to classic Trek.

People are too obsessed with owning things. Own too many things, and they start to own you.

That's true. People do have too much unnecessary things that they never use or need.

I just like the option of getting physical versions of things I cherish. Like my all-time favourite films/tv shows/music etc, (which is a relatively short list). I only buy things of that nature. I don't collect for collect sake.

  11. Yeah I also like the narrative connection between those two scenes. A definite mirror narratively between Jake and his son. Jake being reckless and irresponsible and being chased by a predator, and then Lo'ak being reckless and irresponsible and being chased by a predator.

It made sense to use that music. I hope Cameron allows Franglen to write his own original pieces going forwards, based on Horner's universe, instead of cutting inbetween.

Franglen gives a fitting and very moving tribute to Horner. He says something along the lines of “somebody else should be standing here”, and then the orchestra has moments silence. It’s very classy and incredibly moving

Wow. Looking forward to seeing that.

Yeah I'm sure Cameron has seen the overwhelming love for Franglen's score and will be very happy as the saga continues.

Considering Avatar is made for the cinema experience, with the biggest screen you can find and dolby atmos sound and 3D etc etc, it surprises me everytime I see the first film and now with the second film at home. It's such a gorgeous film and a strong emotional experience for me, that I lose nothing by watching it at home. The cinema experience is just a great bonus way to see it.
