When were they planning to elaborate on these online concerts that we were going to get in May?
-
The money pit. Happy I finished it. Hanks sounds almost unrecognisable, Long is fantastic, the sound mix and the music is great and the OST doesn't exist.

I'm not really complaining, I'm just astonished that, going through these conductor boxes, so many people seemed to insist on recording the same stuff over and over again. And even more astonished that the financial powers that be let them do it. Like, why did no one say: Listen, your 60s recording is good enough, you're not doing this anymore. Do something else. Can you imagine LLL allowing a re-print of Hook while the first version was still available just because they managed to make a violin line a bit more audible?

Why could he, though? I never understood why labels kept forking out money for stuff they already had. Plus, this one in particular just sounds bad.

With the Wieners?
No, Berlin. Vienna is later. I don't understand why he needed to re-record everything 8 times.

I'm curious if his set list will differ at all. It would probably be too much to hope for more Hook, Jane Eyre, Home Alone, Schindler's List etc, but I could do without all the usual marches and stuff at this point. Give me Window to the Past and The Banquet Scene in stead.

Tchaikovsky 5, Karajan, EMI. Yet another wholly unnecessay recording. Brass flubs abound, sonics are awful. Worse than his previous DG recording, so why on earth bother?

Sightseeing is pretty stressful too, when you're 92 (93 then). But yeah, crossing fingers that it will be part of a "Euro tour". I've always dreamt of him coming to Oslo. The Oslo Philharmonic is quite world reknowned, last time I checked, so that should be an attraction.
They're great. I've never heard Tchaikovsky's 3rd symphony played the way they did it with Jansons.

Yes, damn that illness in 2018! Soooooo close. I would have preferred another go at London rather than Berlin again, but having him come back to Europe was way, way beyond what I expected anyway.
I mean, 2018 was sad and all, but the concert still ended up being pretty awesome. The only thing missing from that one is a decent recording.

I'll try and go too this time.

Huh, why can Japan get it earlier?
-
Wait, so what's on May 3rd now?
-
No, because he said he was done with films, right? He's done enough, he needs to enjoy the time he has left.

One could say it sunk.
Unlikely. God himself can't sink it.

Pulcinella suite, Marriner. Wow. Stravinsky can write... music?

Well that didn't work, 2 minutes too long.

Well that's what Disc 3 is. You can listen to that (specifically tracks 1-21; the last 3 tracks are bonus tracks) as your short program.
11 of the OST album's 17 tracks are here exactly, and the other 6 can be easily approximated, yes.
(Really, if a modern rebuild of the OST album from 1st generation elements if what you're after, that was released by Mondo in 2021 on vinyl. Hopefully Sony Music replaces the old master with this rebuild on digital platforms at some point)
But, to use this set to approximate the OST album, it's easy:
This is all mentioned in the liner notes, of course.
Alternatively, you can spruce things up by using alternates/film versions instead
Or mix and match between the two
I'm really excited to try your alternate OST program suggestion. But I want to take things further still: I'm going to insert the Boston Pops concert arrangements in it.

I'm just starting to listen to the Hook Pre-Concorde bootleg, just to see how bad it is.
Violin totally botching Hook's March. Nice.

But this is what I don't understand. Flashpoint, as an album, is great. But we can't have a second disc that contains those B-sides, and thereby covering everything. Meanwhile, Steel Wheels 2000 seems to favour different performances, which I don't want. Straightforward releases would be heaven.

Oh God, yes, ritardando whenever possible! Schindler's List theme possibilities are endless, to name just one.
