SteveMc reacted to Disco Stu in Disco Stu's Isolated Score Videos - John Williams Edition
Well gosh it's been a while since I posted in this thread.

To celebrate the release of The Cowboys and the most underrated of Williams' multi-film director partnerships (with Mark Rydell), here are 3 cues from their final collaboration.

    The River

    Rain Clouds Gather

Back From Town (music starts at 0:27)

Ancestral Home (music starts at 1:00)

It's a wonderful, varied score.  At times overt and sentimental, at others dark and subtle.

I especially love "Ancestral Home."  The climax of the film, it's wonderfully expressive and I love the way it builds and builds as the townspeople decide to help Gibson's character.

    I recommend reading @Incanus' review

As you know, it is a yearly tradition at the Oscars where they show a 3 to 5 minute montage of important industry people that have died. Accompanying it is a live orchestra typically, playing a somber piece, typically from film music.

Earlier this year, they made an unexpected but brilliant choice - the Kent family theme!

It got me thinking what other pieces could be adapted to such a presentation.

Violin Solo of And Malice Towards None in Freedom's Call (expanded)
I actually think this is the standout rendition of this theme though people prefer the piano and the horn solos. I think the violin so expressive. And they could get a big star violinist and expand the piece and making it all amazing.

Finale Piano solo from Book Thief (expanded)

    The Face of Pan

And of course we always have Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan and all 3 themes from Schindler's List.

What else can be adapted into a sombre piece?

I loved the early days of Garfield, but I don't really like some of the latest ones. Still probably one of the better comic strips out there. As far as single panel goes, there's no question whatsoever as to the best.

What an absolute delight! So glad to be able to listento/watch this concert in its entirety.
The yet unreleased arrangements are truly wonderful.

And the sound is pretty good, for a live outdoor perfomance. I might even add that the "harshness" that was pointed in the CD performance is much reduced here, probably due to two things: Mutter's further familiarity with the pieces as well as a more distant micing setup (studio recording tends to locate the mics much nearer to the violin).

A violin concerto would be amazing.  Quite frankly, the Dracula piece sounds like a nice third or fourth movement of a violin concerto.  While I like William's more abstract approach to concert works, I would love a violin concerto in a film/concert hybrid mode, like with Dracula or the Memoirs suite for cello.

Seriously though, Larson is an absolute genius. Over the years I've spent many a rainy day (and a few sunny ones too!) flipping through the marvelous compendiums that are the galleries. Just this past year I completed my collection with the Pre-History of the Far Side, essentially everything he wasn't allowed to publish in the papers and then some. Somehow, some way, everything he does is perfectly aligned with my sense of humor. I've even taken to carrying on his legacy when I have the time, pulling out a pen and pad and scribbling some bogus natural phenomena or experimenting with those classic line-eyed cows of his. Did anyone know that Larson actually had an insect named after him? If you're a close follower of his work you'll find he's an entomology nut, prompting a discovery around the height of his cartooning time to take on the name strigiphilus garylarsoni in his honor. It sounds crazy but it's true. It's some type of lice if I recall correctly. Anyways, I love this guy and his work so very, very much. Thanks a plenty for sharing the link @SteveMc!

A new performance of Copland's Piano Quartet just added to Youtube.  This Italian ensemble bring it off absolutely brilliantly.

Just check out their positively stormy performance of the second half of the first movement.  Gives me the shivers!!

    (from 3:06)

They even tackle the slyly jazzy rhythms of the second movement with aplomb.

It was almost an in-joke performance, in the sense that it was Mutter performing on top of the original concert version, not a specific new arrangement for violin. In one of the recent interviews, she said she'd love to join the orchestra even when they perform regular pieces, so I guess that was that.

In general, it was a terrific concert. The live-mixing as heard on the broadcast wasn't very good, they kept all the focus on the solo violin and the strings section, while other sections sound muffled. However, Newman is an excellent conductor and did a great job. Mutter performed even better than on the album, imho.

I was fortunate to arrange for Ms. Mutter to be on the IndyCast Magic of John Williams specials that I co-host. The show went live this morning.

During our interview (which is the first 35 mins of the special), we briefly talked about Marion’s theme - although she gave nothing away about encore that happened at the concert. (Our interview as on Wednesday, 11 September.) I do not think, though, based on her chat that this Raiders March was a specific Williams arrangement. I think she might have been more specific about that, and in listening to it, I feel she was just playing on top. I will see if I can find out more.

She also hinted strongly about a possible violin concerto.

She was a charming person to speak to, and she loves this music as has been evident in the album, at Tanglewood and on the Saturday Munich concert.
