  1. Ok, I'm out. Too much rudeness around here.

  2. The one that always bothers me are parents bringing little kids to a movie. You can't afford a babysitter, but you can afford to bring your crying brat into Skyfall?
  3. Uh, me. Knowing I have every cue is a huge boner-killer.
  4. Err, not quite - the OST has some editing differences from the score as presented on the first couple discs.
  5. That there's a cue in Homeward Bound titled 'The Wet Pussy' is great. That it's in a Disney movie is fucking uproarious.
  6. Interesting. Looks like it doesn't need strong melody to be successful after all.
  7. Its use in the last two (and TWINE) was fine. The other two maybe overegged the pudding, but only DAD feels like he's using it as a crutch.
  8. I wouldn't mind a few that aren't Star Wars. Lucasfilm isn't just Star Wars, any more than Disney is just Mickey Mouse.
  9. I'd have to say Lost, kinda. Music's good (great even) in fits and starts, but it's not a patch on Giacchino's film work.
  10. With every listen, I get more and more out of it. The quirky plucked rhythms, eclectic layers of percussion, deft string writing, portentous brass, and the electronics... what can I say? They're Cool, man! If this is as derivative as some of you say, please direct me to other scores with this exact sound, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, get Thomas Newman to score more action movies.
  11. Angels In America Road To Perdition Howard The Duck Goldeneye (mostly among the older set)
  12. Star Wars. All six of 'em. Don't dislike them by any means, but a little goes a long way.
  13. Uh, I didn't hear the name clearly, it was... Bowl? Bud Bowl, I think?
  14. Well, everybody knows if you don't properly cite sources, the world stops turning.
  15. Now that I've seen the film (which is great, btw... seeing it again on Veterans' Day), the score does its job splendidly. I'm sure David Arnold would have done a good job with Skyfall, but Newman's approach fits this Bond. Same way Howard Shore fits Ed Wood like a glove, though I wouldn't have wanted him doing Mars Attacks or Sleepy Hollow.
  16. So what else is new? ---- Ya know, for once, I'm ok with Adele's song not being here. 78 minutes of Newman's own is ok by me. HEY-OH!
  17. What about American Beauty? Oscar-nominated, spawned a very, VERY popular scoring style. Then again, I don't know if the score album sold many copies, so I could be wrong.
  18. The guitar line from Grand Bazaar, Istanbul is stuck in my head. That's a pretty good sign, huh?
  19. Originally I was going to start this with "No, no it doesn't," but you know what? Let's have a real conversation about this. The divisive response to Skyfall* has been making me think about this. Say what you will about Newman's effort, good or bad, but melody is not its strongest ingredient (and let's not confuse melody and motif with theme - they're frequently synonymous, but not always - though that's an argument for another day). But is immediate hummability a necessary attribute for what we listen to? Honestly, no, I don't think so. And I'm going to use two fan favorites as examples - Total Recall and Die Hard Yes, there is melody present in both (as there is in Skyfall - listen to Severine and Modigliani and tell me otherwise), but they don't carry their respective scores the way John Williams' ones frequently do, and in the latter case the melody that comes closest wasn't even written by its composer. In both, the orchestra and electronics are largely used for rhythm and texture, and they're splendidly done, both in their films and on their own. Granted, it takes less effort to get into a score with melody at the forefront, but since when has instant gratification been a good thing? So what do you think? Does it have to have a big obvious melody to be good music? *Yes, I understand the argument that even on a rhythm and texture level, Skyfall is boring/underwhemling. I won't debate that, it's a valid opinion.
