  1. I'm never ashamed to let sentimentality/nostalgia guide me in these things. Enjoyment is enjoyment!
  2. Agreed, beyond the Superman film nothing here is exactly catching my eye. The proof shall be in the pudding.
  3. The word is that Gunn wanted to start fresh with a young cast (so probably a 20something Clark Kent relatively new to Metropolis)
  4. It feels nice to be feeling cautiously optimistic about a Superman movie, even if the only reason as of now is that Snyder is no where near it. artisanal bespoke farm-to-table tentpole film
  5. I forgot! As you can tell, neither are Powell scores I reach for... ever.
  6. It'd be funny if the animated film was Kung Fu Panda 4 after Zimmer did the first two sequels.
  7. You'd probably enjoy his score for Missing Link, an animated film from a few years back. Really nice, traditional stuff!
  8. 3-2-4-1-6-5 I assumed 5 was the lowest grossing too but actually Nemesis managed to make less unadjusted! It made less money in 2002 dollars than Final Frontier made in 1989 dollars! Ouch.
  9. I find it difficult to separate my feelings for Burwell scores from the films they were written for, so Fargo will always be my pick for his best. All 28 perfect minutes of it.
  10. What's this? Comcast is officially renaming their service "Peacock With... Er.... Bravo? We Should Probably Quit", wow!
  11. The mind is shut. It was made by those who are incurious, and the incurious keep it. The mind is shut.
  12. The Gettysburg theme came up on shuffle and I was reminded of this. I think of Test Drive every time!
  13. Really this is a genre I engage with more through singles than albums, so some essential artists that didn't do classic albums aren't on this list (most notably, James Brown who was on fire in the early 70s with songs like "Super Bad", "Sex Machine", and "Make It Funky") 1970s Soul/Funk/Disco Chic - self-titled Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life Al Green - Al Green Explores Your Mind War - The World is a Ghetto Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On Parliament - Mothership Connection Funkadelic - Maggot Brain The O'Jays - Back Stabbers The Spinners - self-titled Marvin Gaye - I Want You KC and the Sunshine Band - self-titled The Isley Brothers - Givin' It Back Isaac Hayes - Black Moses Earth, Wind, & Fire - The Best of Earth, Wind, & Fire, Vol. 1 Bill Withers - Still Bill Bee Gees et. al. - Saturday Night Fever Tower of Power - Back to Oakland Booker T. & The MG's - Melting Pot Gladys Knight & The Pips - Imagination Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - self-titled
  14. Yes. And Fargo embodies both the irony and the tragedy of the story. And Hudsucker is wonderful, the whole score not just the Khatchaturian adapted cues. And True Grit! I just love the way Burwell reflects and comments upon the unique tones of the Coens films. A great underrated director-composer collaboration!
  15. I've been doing that since I went back to the 70s! This '84 list is a bit cheating though because Hatful of Hollow is a compilation and not an album album..... oh well! Oh and for the record:
  16. I. LOVE. STAR. TREK. III. A warm blanket movie for me. An old friend. It's always been my sentimental favorite over II.
  17. 1984 Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense [complete soundtrack] Rush - Grace Under Pressure Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA The Smiths - self-titled / Hatful of Hollow The Replacements - Let It Be REM - Reckoner XTC - The Big Express Felt - The Strange Idols Pattern and Other Short Stories Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hyaena Cocteau Twins - Treasure Van Halen - 1984 Penguin Café Orchestra - Broadcasting From Home The Cars - Heartbeat City Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade Lou Reed - New Sensations Metallica - Ride the Lightning Laurie Anderson - Mister Heartbreak King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains I'm cheating with my #1 pick. Previously I've been excluding live albums, and this is one where the version I'm specifying wasn't officially released as a standalone CD until 1999. But Stop Making Sense is so obviously THE musical achievement of the year I had to put it #1. Also I love Purple Rain, but I'm categorizing it as soul/R&B/funk/disco so left it off here. Maybe I'll do a list of favorite 70s and 80s R&B/funk albums like I did favorite hip hop albums for the 90s. I know Prince is a multi-genre artist, but that's the decision I made!
  18. For me, it even improved a lot on rewatch when you can just dig the good parts and roast the bad parts. Easily my favorite MCU feature film from the last two years, the one that's the most fun as just a dumb action movie.
  19. The Polish thing is only offensive if you think being a cleaner is a negative stereotype as opposed to a job normal people have
  20. I knew I wouldn't see Eternals in the theater as soon as I finished Nomadland
