  1. Are y'all talkin' Alan Parsons Project? I can't see the song Alex posted, it's geo-locked.
  2. For anyone interested in the unusual tactics used to get Andrea Riseborough her nomination, I recommend listening to this podcast on the subject. Expect to see more of this in years to come. The Academy acting branch is younger now, very online, and loves celebrity Instagram https://www.theringer.com/2023/1/24/23570306/how-the-shocking-andrea-riseborough-oscar-nomination-happened
  3. I’m using US release dates for my lists, hence The Clash’s self titled debut being in my ‘79 list instead of ‘77 (also I prefer the US track list). London Calling was released in 1980 here, and trust me, it’ll be on that list I’m leaving funk/soul/disco records off my lists to keep them focused on rock music. I love so many albums by 70s artists like War, Chic, The Spinners, Ohio Players, Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic/Parliament, Al Green, Kool & The Gang, KC & The Sunshine Band, The Isley Brothers, and on and on. I should do lists for those.
  4. Yeah I remember that. He didn't win though. I only found a list of winners, I'd love to see all nominees too. https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/actors-oscar-less-than-20-minutes-screentime/

  6. Article appeared in the New York Times today about Justin Peck's new NYC Ballet show "Copland Dance Episodes", where he's put together dances to different sections Billy the Kid, Rodeo, and Appalachian Spring. I remember Peck was also the choreographer for Spielberg's West Side Story adaptation. I keep waiting for a major choreographer to unearth Copland's Dance Panels, an underknown later masterwork. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/24/arts/dance/copland-dance-episodes-new-york-city-ballet.html
  7. Lynch's scene is about 3 minutes. A full minute of that is him silently lighting his cigar The Judi Dench win for Shakespeare in Love that was notorious for its brevity was 8 minutes.
  8. Yeah somehow CE3K wasn't nominated for screenplay or picture. I'd guess that in the voters minds, Star Wars got those spots instead.
  9. I will say that I personally would consider Michelle Williams the co-lead of the film with LaBelle. She's in the right category, but strategically she should've been supporting.
  10. Sequels are always categorized as "adapted" by the Oscars. They are based on the original film. So yes, this year Rian Johnson is nominated for "adapting" his own original character/concept that he wrote for the first Knives Out film. It makes zero sense.
  11. I'm not arguing one way or another (I'm happy to see him nominated), but the Bach adagio is absolutely used as underscore for the emotional turning point of the entire film. And very effectively I might add! I'm aware it's technically also diegetic, with the scene cutting between Mitzi playing the piece and Sammy editing. Truly a masterful scene for all involved. But nonetheless it's clearly being used as both diegetic and underscore.
  12. That's crazy you can't rent a movie that's been out of theaters this long.
  13. Would be the first rock band to win in the category. An indie band I listened to a bunch in college to boot. The soundtrack features Randy Newman, so I wouldn't be too cut up if it won
  14. Looking at these nominees, I do think it's the best chance he's had in many years. But still, I vote no.
  15. Anyone ever listen to Josef Labor? This quintet is very nice. Perhaps lightweight, but that's exactly what I want sometimes.
  16. The Fabelmans has 5 They didn't put him up "for your consideration" at all. Not even a courtesy FYC page for it.
  17. 2022 was a big year for movies satirizing the ultra rich. The Menu, Glass Onion, and now Triangle of Sadness gets a Best Pic nom. Apparently completely engineered by publicists haha. All these celebrities posted on social media about Andrea Riseborough suspiciously on like the same day or something
  18. I'm a huge fan of Ikiru, the original film, and I'm a huge fan of Kazuo Ishiguro, the screenwriter, and I'm a fan of Bill Nighy. I'm very much looking forward to watching Living!
  19. Ruben Ostlund got a Best Director nom lol, there's always a weird one Geez, they really liked Triangle of Sadness, a movie I only heard bad things about. It got a Best Picture nom too. A movie that has a poster with a woman vomiting gold
  20. If Williams didn't win, I'd be happy to see Carter Burwell win an Oscar (this is his 3rd nom) just as a recognition of his distinct and often wonderful career.
