  1. When I got into Who it was with Tennant's second season so there was only two seasons of new Who to catch up on so I did that first, and then went back and sampled stories from each classic Doctor, the ones that seemed most popular/liked. And then based on which Doctor I liked most (T. Baker) I started watching all of his. It didn't seem like the kind of show that absolutely required watching in chrono order, so I was happy to just jump around following my curiosity. But this was also long before there was an easy legal way to watch Who (new or classic) online, so it wasn't as easy to just watch series by series like it is now. I mean this was the days when new Who didn't air in the US until months after it did in the UK.
  2. I couldn't make it through season 1. Puke-worthy
  3. My favorite recording of Nutcracker is by Berlin, but the more recent Rattle recording from 15 years ago or whatever.

  6. RIP Melinda Dillon from CE3k and A Christmas Story (and many other great movies over the years) https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/melinda-dillon-dead-close-encounters-christmas-story-1235317335/
  7. Avatar 2 came very close yesterday to its first single day gross in North America of less than $1 million (it made $1,005,502), which tells me that that particular milestone will come next week probably. If it does then its first sub million day will be between the 53rd and 56th day of release. For reference, Top Gun Maverick didn't have a sub million day until its 76th day of release (on August 10th). So Top Gun isn't bowed out of this contest yet!
  8. While there are some pop albums from 1964 I love (A Hard Day's Night, All Summer Long, The Times They Are a-Changin') there's not really enough to rank. So just the amazing singles list, in alphabetical order 1964 The Animals - "House of the Rising Sun" The Beach Boys - "All Summer Long" The Beach Boys - "I Get Around" The Beach Boys - "Fun Fun Fun" The Beatles - "A Hard Day's Night" The Beatles - "Can't Buy Me Love" The Beatles - "I Feel Fine" The Beatles - "Eight Days a Week" Bob Dylan - "The Times They Are a-Changin'" Bob Dylan - "It Ain't Me Babe" Chad & Jeremy - "A Summer Song" Chuck Berry - "You Never Can Tell" Chuck Berry - "No Particular Place to Go" Dave Clark Five - "Because" Dionne Warwick - "Walk On By" The Dixie Cups - "Chapel of Love" Dusty Springfield - "Wishin' and Hopin'" The Four Seasons - "Rag Doll" The Isley Brothers - "Who's That Lady" James Brown - "It's a Man's World" The Kinks - "You Really Got Me" The Kinks - "All Day and All of the Night" Martha & The Vandellas - "Dancing in the Street" Marvin Gaye - "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" Mary Wells - "My Guy" The Righteous Brothers - "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" The Rolling Stones - "It's All Over Now" Roy Orbison - "Oh, Pretty Woman" Roy Orbison - "It's Over" Sam Cooke - "A Change Is Gonna Come" The Supremes - "Baby Love" The Supremes - "Come See About Me" The Temptations - "The Way You Do the Things You Do" The Temptations - "My Girl" The Velvelettes - "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" The Zombies - "She's Not There"
  9. And Frances Ha is one of only a few Baumbachs I haven't seen yet. I am aware that it has a reputation of being a much brighter and happier movie than he usually makes, largely because of Gerwig. So when I talk about his sour style I am basing it more on stuff like Meyerowitz, Margot, Squid/Whale, etc.
  10. STIV: Voyage Home is such a feelgood optimistic cuddly movie, how do you not like that?!
  11. I really don't even think they're that similar really, especially as Anderson's movies have only gotten more fanciful and disconnected from reality over time. Baumbach tends to write rather sour stories about how upper class artist/intellectual type of people are selfish and cruel to each other in subtle and unsubtle ways. Anderson tends to write bittersweet nostalgic stories of how people make connections with each other, it's a fundamentally more optimistic tone. Anderson's films are also sort of a collage of clear influences that he distills down into his particular mannerisms, while Baumbach's style is more straightforward realistic docudrama (White Noise excepted, since it's an adaptation and a departure for him). They both have mannered writing styles for dialogue but mannered in pretty different ways. I'd say that Darjeeling is the closest Anderson ever got to Baumbach's style.

  13. I don’t like poll options that put words in my mouth. A simple Yes/No/Sometimes is preferred. Leave the arguments for/against to the thread.
  14. I have the N64 controller for Switch thankfully. Beat the game on Agent the other night, going through on Secret Agent now.
  15. I thought RT had done stuff to mitigate the ability to “review bomb” something
  16. Not sure why that hadn't occurred to me, as I've done that before, but yeah I just ordered it for $7
  17. Ugh, I want to read this book about the use of music in John Ford films, but it's not available through my library, not even via interlibrary loan. I want to read it, but I don't know if I $35 want to read it!
  18. I still say that while it's unlikely, it's his best chance in many years
  19. I cut off The Batman after a half hour. I thought it was bad and the score was bad. Full disclosure: I also didn't enjoy the first Reeves Apes movie (or the score) so I wasn't exactly in the demo for this
