Depending on how much money he made from the Matrix trilogy, the difference could be that he decided he didn't really need to do work he didn't enjoy anymore. Or at least not as much of it.

After seeing the movie, I'm pretty sure the "Brazil" tune in Canto Bight is actually an intentional nod dropped in at Rian Johnson's request, because as Finn and Rose are being arrested, the cops tell them they're in violation of "code 27B-stroke-6," which is a direct but fairly obscure reference to Terry Gilliam's Brazil. If I see the film a second time I'm going to see if I can spot any other nods to it.
