Perhaps there has been a previous thread on this, but I couldn't find it.

Anyways, there is a handful or two of composers that I've once disliked, for one reason or another, but then come to like (to varying degrees) at certain points in my film music fandom. I'm sure we all have those, and it would be interesting to hear who, and what score made you "turn around" on said composer.

Rather than list all of mine at once, I'd like to spread them out over time, and add another when I feel like it. But I can start off with one - Harry Gregson-Williams.

When I first discovered HGW in the mid 90s, it was as an extension of Zimmer, but somehow I didn't find anything interesting there. A film like SMILLA'S SENSE OF SNOW had so much potential (Bille August, epicness, Zimmer connection), but I found that the score wandered aimlessly. No melodic hooks, like with Zimmer. Same with some of his other scores at the time, like THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS, THE BORROWERS, ENEMY OF THE STATE, SPY GAME, even ANTZ. I attributed the success of CHICKEN RUN to Powell, not HGW. But then came KINGDOM OF HEAVEN in 2005 and turned everything completely around. I was totallly in love with that score from day one, and it made me not only meet subsequent HGW scores with a more open mind, but also reassess some of those earlier ones I had disliked. I mean, he's still hit and miss, but I got a whole new respect for the man and his music after KINGDOM.

    Your turn.

Given the articles discussion on the Airport being a late rewrite, I think part of why the Airport, Battle, and Centuries Join Hands sound so freaking good together is because Williams actually had a nearly locked edit to work with.  Listening to these them just now, I have to say they blow away any 10 minute stretch of scoring by anyone in the last couple of years.

And we need those initial demos that the isolated score will not provide!

In Tuk Tuk Chase Pt 2, I know the Conveyor Belt is pretty obvious, but anyone noticing the bit similar to a piece of Chase through Coruscant around the middle of the track and then some of Jango Fett Fight just prior to the cool statement of the Indy B theme?

I'm not original, I'll go with both 'Jedi Steps & Finale' and 'Finale' from ESB. Revenge of the Sith was very nice but I never liked the Album version with the Throne Room insert...

I have to say, sadly, this is one of the worst assembled JW sountracks of his career.
Like, why the hell put the end credits as a "prologue", and cut the actual prologue down to 4 minutes of rerecorded temp?

That was my favorite use of tracking/wholesale quotes. Arguably better than the original scene it accompanied (Indy climbing some boxes).

I didn't like the film but I enjoyed more the score. I really like the KOTCS bit during the plane-time-travel scene (mainly because that part of the score), and the new material stuck for me.

Anyway, it has too many references to previous films. Makes me wonder if Williams wasn't enthusiastic about the film, someone just really liked the temp tracks or if Williams just felt too old for 150 minutes of new material...

I was at first quite disappointed... I reached Germany, 1944 and found a lot of previously know music that doesn't seem to fit whatever might be happening (haven't seen the film yet, but I know so well those tracks that are difficult to disconnect from previous images).

Now, I'm taking a second listen and, ok, is not so bad. I mean, Williams is never bad; but you understand me. In any case the score makes me even more skeptical with the film. I usually don't like Mangold's directing and my gut feeling is that he doesn't understand music as well as he needs to point Williams into more surprising fields...

    (So many bad guy themes/motifs).

Also there are SEVERAL other short motifs. This is a dense score. It will take crowdsourcing effort from all of us to nail all of this down.

So, in the first screenshot, the top track is the film version, the bottom one if the alternate. The section where the helicopter is descending where people have noticed the different performances. Waveforms in certain areas look different. Also, another thing I noticed is the alternate track started a microsecond before the film version did, so I had to sync those up and even then, because of the take used in the film it throws everything else off sync. Screenshot 2 is the film version where the cue ends and Entrance To The Park begins. You can see the nice 1.5 second break before it begins, versus screenshot 3 where it begins almost immediately after the previous cue begins to end. I don't know what instrument it is, but in the 3rd screenshot, at the very start of the highlighted section is the final chiming we hear before the cue fades. The 2nd screenshot is that same section, except the final cue starts later as it does in the film, so you get a nice little break for the marching horns and drums kicks into gear. And, the film version appears exactly in the film as it does on this new album, with no edits.
