  1. Yup, although JW also has slightly more Oscars than anybody else.
  2. Hi all, I'm learning a new statistical programming software, and one of the ways I'm learning it is just by finding data that interests me and making pretty pictures with it, just for fun. I figure whenever they concern film/film music type stuff, I'll post them here! The first one is a graph of the gross of the films that win Best Score at the Oscars, over time. Interestingly, the number of films that win both Best Score and Best Picture are not as high as I suspected (less than 15% since 1970). Outliers (those that earned more than 500 million domestically) are labeled. The second one graphs the award amount and composition of EGOTers (winners of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony), and puts JW up against them to see how he stacks up.

  4. What's the source for Treasure Planet? Never heard that he was interested in doing that. Love JNH's score.
  5. Don't forget, Satellite Celebration was actually a re-working of JW's "Men of Yorktown March"
  6. I think it's possible that TFA gets a nomination, considering that JW will not have any other scores in the running that year. In 1999, 2002 and 2005, he 1-4 other JW scores to compete with. That said, KotCS didn't get a nomination, and it was the only film score JW did in 2008. BFG will definitely get a score nomination.
  7. It's a pretty unfair competition since TPM, RotS and RotJ have entirely unoriginal end credit sequences. But here's how I'd rank them, taking points off for unoriginality: V IV II VI I III
  8. "Big Beautiful Ball" I think is pretty unique in Williams' output. And not a total Mancini rip either. John Goldfarb also has a cool blend of Irish/Arabic music in "King Fawz Feast" which is weird but cool They're not masterpieces but some of them can be really fun.
  9. It's got a nice main theme that--in certain developments--can become quite soaring. Still, it's the least favorite of the ones I bolded. Honestly it's good but not sure I shoudl've bolded it.

  11. It has been a while since you heard the original trilogy, I take it? Remember that what was considered acceptable in the past is no longer acceptable with auto tune and excessive editing to remove all imperfections at the cost of music. You should hear what Rachmaninoff, Holst, Vaughan Williams sounded like. The point is, you are being pedantic in these references and LSO original trilogy would fail in spades if you applies the same level of scrutiny but our ears have evolved with the technology available. You really should compare era specific recordings. Modern LSO to modern LA and vintage LSO to vintage LA. You'll see it is your expectations that have changed. Nope, I'm comparing to the prequels, not the OT (as I stated in my post--read the last paragraph). Parts of the OT performance sound sloppy to me, tbh.
  12. Here's just a few examples of the type of stuff that makes Hollywood orchestras less good than the LSO (or any regular orchestra). This is actually from a cue that I quite like - one of the best in Tintin IMO. Most of my problems are with the brass, which may have more to do with the fact that I play a brass instrument and thus have a sharper ear for brass. 2:38 - trombones and percussion are not in sync on the hits at the end of the glisses (trombone are dragging) 3:19 - low brass and low strings are not together on the triplet figures 3:32 - trumpets are early on the second hit 4:07 - trumpet intonation(?) on the high note I'm sure the LSO and other established orchestras also make these types of mistakes, but thinking through the JW scores they've done in the last 15 years, I can't think of any off the top of my head. Note also that none of these mistakes are the fault of any individual player - they have more to do with problems of coordination. Which I think is because freelance players aren't constantly playing with the same people, so they are less able to anticipate how others will interpret the music than a group that always plays with the same people.
  13. That sucks, but I'm glad they explicitly told us that JW will be returning for BFG. Otherwise that would have driven us mad, to speculate over whether JW ever scored another Spielberg film...

  15. Yup, and that's exactly the type of subtle derivation JW peppers throughout virtually all of his scores Of course no way to know for sure, but I'm about 85% certain that the reference was intentional. The other possibility is JW was referencing Leonard Bernstein's "Make Our Garden Grow"...
  16. Stylistically it's very different from other sw music, but thematically it fits right in; the main motif of the piece is derived from Luke and Leias theme
  17. Nope, I don't think the LA musicians are any less talented. But I do think that an ensemble as a whole benefits from repeatedly rehearsing with the same members, in the same room, etc. A good orchestra should be more than the sum of its parts.
  18. Because the difference in quality between Hollywood studio orchestras and the LSO (and to a lesser extent other established orchestras vs a bunch of highly talented freelance musicians) is pretty extreme to me--particularly for technically challenging scores like SW where the ensemble benefits from being on the same wave length. Whereas I'm perfectly happy listening to a good non-JW conductor interpret the maestro's work (ala William Ross in CoS). The difference in performance quality between something like "Chase Through Coruscant" and "Sir FRancis and the Unicorn", for instance, is massive IMO.
  19. Excellent news!! I hope JW conducts but id much rather have the LSO perform with another conductor than have JW conduct with an LA orchestra
