    Too much money for me.

I’ll wait another 30 years for the expansion and then complain about the shipping cost and/or import tax.

I’ve been an avid collector for 30 years, and still I “only” own 75 % of the content of this box. And I’d wager that’s a pretty decent percentage!

Still, lots of the stuff that is on here that I never got isn’t really “rare” - it’s just that I never pulled the trigger on the OSTs. I just figured I’d “get to it later”.

Thats about five discs worth of content that I don’t own.

This box is a great way to “catch up” on a lot of that music!

Now that I (finally!) opened it and have started to (slowly and mindfully) enjoy this box set, there is only one thing for me to say:

I'm dreaming of a white Chr...

    Wait.

I'm dreaming of a second set.

    For multiple reasons.

rough cut got a reaction from Chewy in Star Wars Trilogy: The Original Soundtrack Anthology turns 30!
My mom got me the John Williams Conducts John Williams Star Wars The Skywalker Symphony CD during a trip to London back in ’93. I was 13 years old. That was my first soundtrack CD, and my first introduction to proper film scores.

Back home in Stockholm, Sweden, my interest in film music took off, and I remember the excitement when I found the Star Wars Anthology Box in the biggest music shop in the city centre at the time. It must’ve been in 1994 or 1995, so I must’ve been 14 or 15.

The box set was locked inside one of those glass counters where they kept all the box sets (a rare thing in those days - these days box sets are a dime a dussin).

I remember looking at the cover wondering what music was hidden in side that box. All I knew was that there was a ton of music missing from my single Star Wars CD.

I used to visit that shop a lot, and just look at it, my hands pressed against the glass.

I remember thinking with anxiety that I would get to the shop one day and that it wouldn’t be there - that it’s been sold to someone else. I was so happy when I saved up enough money to buy it and bring it home.

I played those CDs to death. I transferred them to tape and played them in my Walkman all through high school.

In many ways, I guess that buying that box was when my true love for soundtracks, and the intricate world that it is, revealed itself.

I first saw an advertisement for this in the USA TODAY entertainment section, which was one of my favorite newspapers to read. Unfortunately it was very vague and I just figured it would be the 3 original soundtracks packaged together.

However I did mark the date down and went to a mall the day it was released, I believe it was Camelot Music. And they had it upfront with the newest releases. My heart stopped when I read the packaging. Needless to say I grabbed a copy.

I still have mine, and I had John Williams sign the booklet for me.

    Very nice thread, this! <3

In addition to the Anthology and Close Encounters ads and various German ones I also have this in my Williams binder that I have been maintaining for more than 30 years now and that some of you saw when you added one of the last pages with all your autographs on the Milano programme (<3):

Don’t ask me why I had him sign inside the booklet rather than on the box itself - the folly of youth!
Really loving everyone’s recollection of this set - what wonderful memories!

Wow. This was my first soundtrack purchase ever! I got it in 1994, so I guess I've been collecting film scores for about two thirds of my life now. That's crazy.

And yes, compared to the amazing expansions we have today, certain aspects of this fall short in comparison. But in the era it came out? It was incredible! Just absolutely nothing like it

I'll try to write more at some point.

There are a lot of nerdy things that I can go on about at length. This is certainly one of them.

I don't remember what the magazine was where I saw an ad for this box. Starlog? The Star Wars fan club? It was NOT a prominent ad. But... What the hell was this? The description was... Vague? I wish I still had a copy of it. There had to be something that made me drop everything I was doing (probably not much) and drive to the music store. ( @Yavar Moradi do you remember Hastings in Prescott?) And they had it. I remember my jaw dropping and staying there when I read the contents. Final Duel. Everything from the 2 LP Empire. The second Cantina song.

It's still the prettiest collection I own, IMHO. The Blue Box and the Star Trek TOS box come close. I think it's the larger format book that puts it over the top. The notes are wonderful. And you can't go wrong with Star Wars OT pictures and art. I still love the black disc covers with the nearly black logos on them. And the three discs with McQuarrie art and the fourth with Williams. It's sitting to my immediate right, next to the Blue Box.

I know we have a bunch of old timers like me around here. You understand. You probably have your own memories about this box. Do share!

For you youngsters: You have no idea. Not just in terms of Star Wars, but even in terms of expansions like this just weren't done back then. This might not have been the first but it had to have been close. We kind of take it for granted that if we just hold out long enough that eventually one of the THREE or FOUR specialty labels will crack the arrangements and we'll get Star Trek, or Harry Potter, or even something like Lord of the Rings that comes out expanded / complete almost out of the gate.

I love the SE disks. And I still listen to the original LP programs regularly. But I can't think of any soundtrack release (yes, even including the Star Trek discs) that had the emotional high that this box did. It still kind of does!

I framed my bonus covers from LLL. For whatever reason I can’t recall, LLL sent me 2 copies of the X-Files Movie, one cover was signed.

I have my John Williams to the right and below is my personalized note from Michael Giacchino on the first release of Star Trek Deluxe.

The FSM Goldsmith Memoriam magazine isn’t signed by anyone but I found it fitting to frame it.

I have some more covers to frame, eventually.

Turns out my brother-in-law did click on the link I sent him quickly enough, so he did get sent a copy and has just given me possibly the best Christmas present. No time to listen to it today, but tomorrow has a long listening session pencilled in!

31 years after I bought the OST, I’m about to hear it all. What a blast.

I thought someone else would have started a thread dedicated to this by now, but I'll do it!

These two new compositions premiered in Pittsburgh on December 12th.  Some descriptions of the new arrangements are in the thread for that concert, starting here.

There does not appear to be any videos of them posted to youtube (surprising!), but the whole concert was recorded and will stream on Stage+ on December 30th:

The quote I’m referring to had more to do about her son being a soundtrack enthusiast and how he had put up a few suggestions to his mom about additional pieces to perform - “mom, you’ve gotta record this!”. It didn’t specify which tracks, but it’s not hard to imagine that it was some of the “rarer” pieces that usually doesn’t get re-recoded (Dracula, Cinderella Liberty).
