  1. Thanks! That's an improvement over what I had. I like this album cover, a lot. Simple, yes, but still bold with that main title lettering on the solid black background. When I was a kid I could hear the wooshes of the main title credits in my head as I blasted this record on my Dad's old record player. I'd like this cover better if the small white lettering was gone.
  2. Anyone here have a good hi-res scan of the cover for the Debney Superman album?
  3. McLaglen also directed Mitchell (1975)… wow, maybe in some alternate universe Williams scores that instead of Jaws
  4. The most film music-y classical music to my ears is the first movement of Bruckner’s 6th (Maestoso) and the last movement of Bruckner’s 8th. The first couple minutes of the Maestoso sound like a Main Title cue for a superhero movie, and the last five or so minutes of it sounds like an epic Finale cue.
  5. I own the Holst Planets BPO album, that is a good one.
  6. Thanks for posting, I just watched this - or most of it. Didn’t watch the Sinatra medley at the end. We had tickets to see Borge but the concert was canceled when his wife died, then he died shortly after.
  7. Jay, that's pretty much my opinion of the album too. Though I do also really like the Pavane album opener and Le Cygne (The Swan), very nice pieces of music that I discovered through this album. I remember in my early days of film score CD buying when I was discovering these BPO albums I was kinda bothered that Williams didn't include one of his own love themes on this album.
  8. I own Bernstein By Boston and the only piece I like from it is the Candide Overture.
  9. Oh man, I am behind on these... I’d never heard Peter & The Wolf or JW’s conducting of the Nutcracker before. I made it a few minutes into Peter & The Wolf just now on Spotify and I got bored with it. I might have liked this as a kid, but it’s not my cup of tea today. Swing, Swing, Swing is one of my favorite BPO albums. It’s great from start to finish and it was my first introduction to some of these classic tunes. I always found this recording of “Swing, Swing, Swing” to be pretty sloppy, the BPO is not up to this piece like whatever studio ensemble played on 1941. But it is still a fun listen. I would love to know what the BPO players thought of this piece as they were performing it. The song “America, The Dream Goes On” is a real stinker - one of very very few Williams pieces I outright dislike. I used to own this album and never listened to it. I don’t like corny patriotic songs and ATDGO is the worst. This is the only BPO album where the Williams track is the worst piece on the program.
  10. Just a guestimate but I voted a couple times a year. It’s beautiful music, and always a moving experience.
  11. Never owned this album and never heard it. I listened to one song on Spotify just now... hard pass on this one.
  12. Film - Jaws. This movie has aged so well and still holds up to repeat viewing. Score In Film - Jaws. This was the toughest choice as both movies rely on their score in different ways. Ultimately, Jaws gets the edge just because the film relies a little more on the music than CE3K does, in my opinion. The music stands in for the shark through most of the runtime, it's truly a lesser movie without that score. Score on Album - Close Encounters. I don't listen to this score too often and I only listen to it in its entirety when I do. This music is an experience unto itself. I don't listen to CE3K casually, I will set aside some time out of my day to savor all of it.
  13. Damn you for making me choose between these two.... I will mull this over.
  14. OK, that would make sense, if the report is true. And it sounds like some of the bosses I've had...
  15. Why would JW almost quit because JJ came back to direct 9? Seemed like they got along fine.
  16. Definitely the Original Star Wars Trilogy, remastered C&C + OST by MM That Universal Collection is a close second just to have all that unreleased stuff. Then the Indy box, I’m mostly happy with the expanded releases we got despite some of their issues. Then a C&C Star Wars Prequel box, I am content with what is available and what’s been leaked. Then an Oliver Stone box, I’m content with the OSTs. I like BOT4OJ but not crazy about the other two. Lastly, a Star Wars Sequel Trilogy box. I really dislike these movies and am largely indifferent toward the scores. Any of these would be an instant purchase for me though.
  17. Yes, I was disappointed in this score when the movie first came out. And no, the expansion didn’t change my opinion. Outside of the Main Theme, The Hunt, Rescuing Sarah and The Raptors Appear this score doesn’t do much for me.
  18. Part 1: I’ve seen all but BFG, Book Thief, Warhorse, Tintin, Geisha, Terminal Part 2: I’ve seen all but Stepmom, Amistad, Seven Years In Tibet, Rosewood, Nixon, Far & Away, JFK, Stanley & Iris Part 3: I’ve seen all but River, Monsignor, Heartbeeps, Midway, Missouri Breaks Part 4: I have seen only Earthquake, Sugarland, Cinderella Liberty, Images, Poseidon, Cowboys Part 5: None from this group * I have attempted to watch Seven Years In Tibet and Reivers but didn’t make it very far into either one * Actually, after submitting my vote I realized I did watch Daddy-O via MST3K.
  19. I gave “On Stage” a listen on Spotify this evening, I recognized a number of tunes. An enjoyable album for what it is. While listening I couldn’t help but think: what if Williams had included a 10-minute “Thomas and the King” suite on this album? The Boston Pops players’ revolt of ‘84 would have been much uglier.
  20. At least they spelled ‘Overture’ right. Temple of Doom is the first soundtrack I ever bought at the time of the film’s theatrical release. Even at 8 years old I noticed all the missing music.
  21. I don’t own “On Stage”, not my cup of tea whatsoever. I’m sure it’s a well performed and programmed album though. I may eventually get this just for the sake of collecting them all.
  22. Love that Kunzel album, he nails Planet Krypton and Wrath of Kahn, and with Nimoy redoing his great voiceover. And Kunzel knew that The Bicycle Chase and The Departure were better than Williams’ Adventures On Earth concert piece. The only thing I dislike about Kunzel albums are the silly synthesizer and sound effects. But this is a discussion for a different thread....
  23. “Out Of This World” is a fun album and makes a good companion album with “Pops In Space”. I’m not crazy about the 2001 opener, it’s certainly a great piece of music but it isn’t a film score and also it’s been recorded by everyone and is included on so many compilations and collections. “The Planet Krypton” or “The Day The Earth Stood Still” would have made a better album opener. Too bad Williams didn’t record more Herrmann, I think the only thing he ever recorded of Herrmann’s was “Devil and Daniel Webster” on Hollywood Sound. I guess Williams figured Herrmann himself already recorded his own concert suites enough... The concert version of Adventures On Earth has always been a disappointment, and it’s such a long piece that it takes up a lot of album space or concert time when Williams conducts it live. And he conducts it live A LOT.
  24. I bought Aisle Seat in the 90s for the “Yes, Giorgio” track. The rest of the album is kind of a snoozer for me. I already owned By Request so I didn’t need Raiders or Flying, not to mention all concert recordings of The Raiders March really pale in comparison to the LSO OST. I prefer the Sony recording of Raiders March to this one. The remaining tracks certainly are very popular or iconic film themes, just none that appeal to me very much. I’m also not into musicals, I’d have preferred if the album focused entirely on film scores and saved the popular songs for a different album. Some Herrmann and Goldsmith instead would have made this a killer album.
